they are a pain in the butt, you have to diconnect the strut mounting bolts on the strut tower and lower control arm, and you will need a 17mm Allen wrench sears carries them good luck

Here is what I did. I purchased a kit from a foreign car parts store that had pistons with rings intalled and new cylinders. It only takes 4 bolts to remove the engine, the hard part is you have to lift the back of the car to get the engine out. Be sure to purcahsed a full gasket kit becaus eyou hae to pul the cylinder heads off. It was not too difficult, I consider myself mechancily inclined.

Also, there is a book named something like the Beetle Bilbe you can pick up your local book store.

On a 1200? You do NOT want to do this.

Here's why: The 1200cc pistons (77mm bore) are really expensive since almost no one uses them anymore. (The only people who DO use them are SCCA Formula Vee racers, and racing stuff is always expensive.) I would guess that for the $400 a set of 77mm jugs costs, you can upgrade the engine to a 1600. You'll need to have the case and heads machined to get them to fit.

Sounds like the problem is with the trailer itself. Either it is wired incorrectly, or a wire has shorted against the frame.

If the fuse only blows after a while, a bare wire is probably rubbing the frame occasionally. This will be hard to test for, but you could get under the trailer and look at or feel the insulation, look for pinch points, and check the wiring in the lights and at any junctions.

If the fuse blows immediately, use a multimeter to find one or more pairs of wires with almost 0 resistance. Remember that 12V trailer lights don't have much resistance - look for the combination of wires with the lowest resistance and start there. Also remember to check from each wire to the frame of the trailer. Your attachment point on the trailer should be either bare metal, or a bolt that isn't rusty. Paint and rust will act as insulation.

need new starter or solenoid or starter relay. check the small wire on the lock clyinder and key is probely broken set of the securty system.

Use the spacers to change the pulley configuration.

The alternator pulley halves separates when you remove the large retaining nut at the center. More spacers between the pulley halves loosens the belt.

Fewer spacers between the pulley halves TIGHTEN the belt.

Keep the extra spacers under the large washer so you'll have them to adjust the NEXT belt.

My 2001 VW New Beetle TDI lost power and gas mileage at 110,000 miles. The problem was the Mass Air Flow Sensor. It is located on the the left side of the air filter box whey you face the engine with the hood open. A black plastic air tube fits into one side. An electrical connection clips into the middle, the right side slips into the air filter box. You need a screw driver to remove two screws from the side of the air filter box and pliars to squeeze the clamp holding the air tube. It can be ordered on e-bay for about $70 including shipping and takes about 10 minutes to install.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, American manufacturers were especially confronted with competition from Asian countries, most notably China.

First of all you have to remove the steering wheel (27mm socket), the wiper switches and the turn signal switch.

Then you have to remove the lock cylinder by putting a small rod in the small hole at the top of the cylinder and apply slight pressure, the lock will then come out.

You now should have access to the ignition switch itself.

For the 1970 model year there are two kinds. The earlier model which has long wires attached and the newer model which just has a connector on the backside and you just plug the wire coupler into it. Make sure you check to see which one you have.

Also here is an IMPORTANT tip. When removing the steering wheel, do not remove the nut all the way. Leave it on 3 turns or so. Then pull the steering wheel first by using a twisting motion. I guarantee you it will break loose SUDDENLY.

There are legions of people who have ended up in the hospital with broken noses because the steering wheel broke loose suddenly and hit them in the face! When the steering wheel does break free then remove the 27mm nut to safely remove the wheel.

Reverse these instructions to assemble.

I highly advise taking digital photos along the way during disassembly so you don't forget how it all went back together again!

Get John Muirs -"How to keep your Volkswagen alive, A manual for the Compleat Idiot" and Bentleys "workshop manual". They have a huge amount of info, John Muir is a "real world" work-book and the Bently Manual is the VW "Official Workshop Manual" . Please be more specific when asking questions, the more info the better, if you mean the fuel pump on a Carb model then take the fuel lines off then take off the bolts that hold down the pump. Just be sure and get the right model pump for the right year Bug. There is a shaft that the pump rides on and over the years they changed lengths slightly.

To the left and right of your factory radio are narrow vertical slots. Volkswagen, as well as a local car audio shop, can provide you with keys that slide into these slots to hook onto the stereo and pull it out. If you are the DIY type and want to fashion your own, the hooking point is in the lower portion of these slots. Design your stereo removal key with the "hook" facing down to properly catch the unit with damaging it. Once the keys have "caught" the stereo, simply pull it towards you in a slow, controlled yet firm manner. NOTE: The top and bottom of your stereo unit have indentations that are filled by flexible semi-spheres with a tong-like action to secure the radio in place. The more you adjust these, the more flexible they will become. The end result is that you may need a new harness for your unit in order for it to stay in place.

You must have cruise control. The lower cable comes up from the transmission and fastens to the transducer. A shorter cable goes from there, through the firewall, and into the car. It slides on to the back of the speedo head and clips into place. The connections outside the car are pretty straightforward, there are nuts that you unscrew. Behind the dash is abit tricky if you have big hands. There is a locking device that you have to push with a finger while you grasp and pull the cable with the other hand. Match the new cables to the old ones before you install them. On the new cables pull out the inner drive cable and check that it has some light grease on it. Some come lubed, some don't. Also, put a little oil into the "bell" end of the short cable. This is the end that goes on to the speedo head. If you are successful at this go get yourself a steak dinner.

SAE 30 oil. This is a light engine oil which is generally meant for lighter air-cooled engines. Just look for "SAE 30". Beetles use about 2 1/2 quarts.

The top bolt on your starter is also one of the 4 bolts that holds your engine in. The nut (17 mm) is located behind the cooling shroud, it"s not easy to get to so a box ratchet wrench is needed. You'll notice the head of the bolt at the starter is round with a flat spot to keep it from turning while your working on the other end. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST.

Pull it, clean the case and send it to a transmission rebuilder that has successfully rebuilt aircooled VW transmissions before. As John Muir said in his "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive," you have to be in practice and he didn't want to practice that much, and it takes tools you would never dream of owning.
