my daughter took hers to the dealer, sweet talked a diagnostic refused repair and was given a very detailed list of parts to fix the problem. air filter, mass air flow sensor(this turned the check lite off) air mtere air filter, breathe valve( if this is not replaced it can cause the mass flow sensor to go out again) ,grommet, fuel pump relay and clean the intake. buy your own parts, was easy enough for an 18 year girl to fix minus the 700.00 + in labor chrges. she was also told that if everything is not repaired she will have to start over cause once the sensor is fouled youmst relace it and all the other parts so it will not foul again. hope this helps

Where should rpm idle be set 1985 volkswagen cabriolet?
On an 85 Volkswagen cabriolet it should be set at 975rpm ±25 if you're running stock cams
Where are the timing marks for a 1.8 volkswagen engine?
There is a notch on the valve cover side of the overhead cam pully. Line it up with the top of the valve cover. Turn the engine over with a wrench until you see the TDC on the fly wheel. You will see a bar with bumps at either end on the fly wheel as it passes by. If things are way out of wack here you need to make sure you don't force anything as you may hit the valves as you turn the engine. If the timing belt is off the valves can out of the way as you turn the engine. Remove the spark plug from cylinder one and verify you have the cylinder at the top of its stroke (TDC). Once you have done this you need to remove the distributer cap and verify that it is pointing at cylinder one point (2 o'clock position approx). To move the spark timing you have to move the lover cam positioned below the alternator. To verify you have this set up correctly there is a notch on the main pully of the crankshaft and a dot impression on the cam pully for the distributer - these should be beside each other. Put your belt on and tension properly. Turn the engine through some cycles to make sure the valves are not hitting. Start your engine and verify timing with a strobe gun and rotate the distributer to get it just right. If you want to do it crudely just rotate counter clockwise until you hear some pinging and then back off a bit (~5degrees)- should be perfect.
Your going to need several to remove the front and back seats plus the console to change out the carpeting.
To remove the front seats is easy:
Look under the seats and disconnect the weight sensor/seatbelt sensor/heated seat hookup if it's there.
Slide the seat all the way forward, and using a flathead screwdriver pop up the plastic covers on the back of the seat on the floor. From there use a wrench of some kind to remove both bolts holding the seat down, then just lift up and tilt forward to remove the seat.
To remove the back seat:
Pop the trunk and pull the seat releases on the top of the trunk. Pull the seatbacks down and use a flathead screwdriver to push the outer latches of the seats off while lifting up on the ends and the seats will pop out. In order to get the seat. Look toward the black rail in the back and you should see a small metal wire under the black rail. Just push down really hard and pull back and the it should pop out. Do the same to the other side, and then just ease the seat out of the spot.
To remove the center console:
Twist the base of the shift knob until it comes off the shift ball. Pull on the shift ball to remove it. In the front of the shift boot there is a tab you can squeeze back to lift up and remove the boot. Pull the ebrake up and put a screwdriver in the tabbie to let the cover off that. Pull up on the rear cup holder, and unsnap the three console pieces that fit on the top. Use a socket or wrench to remove the ebrake and one of the body control modules right there, and the two tiny black screws on the sides of the console. Remove anything else and lift up the center console. Also the cigarette lighters are going to need to be disconnected as well.
From there pull the carpet out and replace, enjoy!

How to replace air condition belt on 1998 geo?
You cant. Them come with a automatic belt tensioner and if the belt breaks, you must disassemble the whole pulley system.
Make sure your cat converter isn't plug which is part of the exhaust system. If it's plugged the engine builds up pressure and won't run.
In reference to the above answer, No. This would only occur if you were driving for a distance, and a long one at that.
You are correct in thinking it is the fuel pump relay, which is poorly designed, overheats on the soldered contacts, and fails. The relay is located in the fuse box, just under the dash on the left side. It will be fuse relay # 19.

How do I install a 1988 vw cabriolet vinyl top?
I would highly recommend getting in touch with Bill at this Ebay store:
http://stores.eBay.com/Autotops-Store
I bought a top for my '92 VW Cabriolet from them and it came with an installation video that was GREAT. I think the price for the top and video was about $220 or so. I had never put a top on a car and found their DVD to be indispensable (in fact, I feel confident in saying that there is no way on God's Earth I could have put that top on without it) BTW, I am NOT in any way affiliated with them, nor will I get a dime from this. I am just a customer who found their top and instructional video to be a great deal and saw this question, so I thought I would share my experience. I know from that experience that there are a bunch of options out there but these guys will help you out if you need it (and if you haven't done this before, you will need help) and their top is really nice quality and comes with a 5 year warranty. Anyway, I did mine myself with Bill's video and a little help from him along the way and now have a great looking, brand new top that I saved about 400 bucks on by installing it myself. Also, let me say that if you have never put a top on, it will take you a LONG TIME (they say to "Plan on a weekend, but I say it's more like a week) and is a royal pain in the A$$ in some parts and pretty easy in others. Installing a top is MUCH more difficult than you would think that it would be, but if you are pretty handy with your tools, you can do it if I did. Having said that, I certainly don't think that 400 dollars for the installation is nearly as outrageous as I thought it was before I installed mine and if I had the extra cash, I would probably just pay someone else to do it next time. Hope this helps!

How do you remove the front seats in a 72 super beetle?
# If the vehicle is 1972 model with a seat belt warning buzzer, unplug the electrical connector. # Raise the adjustment lever and slide the seat forward until its runner contacts the leaf-spring stop. # Depress the leaf-spring stop with a screw driver, raise the adjustment lever and slide the seat forward about 1 1/2 inches. # Reach under the seat and detach the tension spring. # Slide the seat forward, lift it off the tracks and remove it. # To install the seat, grasping it with the backrest folded forward for better balance, place it in position over the tracks and slip the inner runner into its track. Pull the seat toward you slightly and insert the outer runner into its track. # Raise the adjusting lever, slide the seat back and reconnect the tension spring. # Plug in the electrical connector for the seat belt warning buzzer, if equipped.
There is no one answer if referring to a belt on a car- depends on which belt, and which TYPE of belt. Different procedures for different cars, different engines.

Why does your Volkswagen car flood the engine as soon as you give it a small bit of gas?
If your Volkswagen engine floods when you give it a small amount of gas, it could be due to a malfunctioning fuel injector, which may be delivering too much fuel. Another possibility is a problem with the engine's air intake system, causing an imbalance in the air-fuel mixture. Additionally, issues with the throttle position sensor or a faulty fuel pressure regulator could also contribute to this flooding problem. It's advisable to have the vehicle diagnosed by a professional to identify the exact cause.

Same thing happened on my 2000 Jetta. I took the cover off the inside of the trunk lid and found that the plastic peg that the solenoid hits had broken off. I am now searching for the part to see how hard it is to replace. I have a feeling I will have to buy the whole mechanism.
How do you change the thermostat adjacent to the radiator on a 199o vw cabriolet?

To replace the thermostat inside the water pump: Drain the coolant; remove the lower radiator hose flange from the water pump housing; pull the thermostat out; install new t-stat and seal; reinstall the flange; fill system with coolant/anti-freeze.
