Why does your 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis buck or misfire when under a load mostly when climbing a hill but taking it out of overdrive seems to reduce the problem?

You solved the problem yourself. DO NOT USE overdrive unless you are on an open road and driving over 55 miles an hour. If you do you could cause the transmission to start slipping and pay thousands to repair expectially if you are hualing a load.

Updated October 2009This first response is the correct one - Ford has identified the brake pressure switch as being defective and leaks.

Contract your Ford dealer for the recall information for our specific vehicle.

When I had the same problem it was a fuse that kept shorting out. And I had to unplug the wire going to the bottom of the brake cylinder because of a brake fluid leak that was shorting out the wire.

Hmmm. This sounds like a problem in the instrument cluster module. The module gets a signal from the transmission sensor that gives it a count it uses to calculate miles driven and current vehicle speed. This signal also goes to the computer that calculates the mileage. There is also a fuel flow sensor that tells the computer the current rate of flow of the fuel. The chances of both of these sensors going bad at the exact same time is probably slim. The fuel computer error is simply because one or more of the values it needs to calculate MPG is missing or corrupt. Since you also have no speedometer function look first at the transaxle speed sensor.

Having said that, it could be any of the following:

Bad fuse in the circuit that powers the sensor or it has come unplugged at the transaxle.

Bad sensor.

Bad instrument cluster module.

Note: There is no speedometer cable any more. Everything is done by electronic sensors and computers.

Of course it could be oil leaking just like the other fellow said. Carl

How do you replace oil pan in 1997 Mercury villager?

1 Remove the plug on the oil pan with a wrench and drain the oil into a drain pan. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Place a support jack under the crankshaft pulley.

2 Remove the support bolts on the front and rear engine mounts, along with the hold-down brackets on the two rear refrigerant/heater pipes.

3 Disconnect the front and rear transaxle bolts and the brace holding the transaxle to the engine. Unhook the connector on the oil level sensor.

4 Loosen the bolts on the oil pan, working from the outside towards the center. Remove the pan and scrape away the old seal with a paint scraper. Make sure that all the parts are clean, and that the old gasket seal has been completely removed.

5 Put a new gasket in place and seal it with silicone sealer. Replace the oil pan and tighten the bolts in sequence, starting with the inner bolts and working out.

6 Replace the connector on the oil level sensor, the front and rear transaxle braces, the exhaust inlet pipe, the crossmember bolts and crossmember, and the front and rear engine support through-bolts.

7 Slide out the support jack and lower the vehicle. Fill the engine with clean oil. Mercury recommends that the optimum oil for the Villager is SAE 5W-30.

How do you fix codes P0171 and P0174 in a 99 mercury sable LS with the check engine light on?

Bank 1 and bank 2 is running lean. I would suspect a vacuum leak. Check for cracked, disconnected or broken vacuum line(s). The fuel filter could also be plugged and restricting the flow of fuel.

You are rebuilding the rear of a 28ft cigarette boat and can't decide whether to put 1 Mercury 454 engine with a bravo outdrive or twin 350's Any advice on which would be better?

This is a very good question and a few things should be cleared up before you attempt the project. First what is you budget. Because if there is no budget twin Chevy small blocks with blowers would most likely be the fastest most expensive and the most to maintain. Not to mention how close the engines will be shoe horned in. A single engine is the most likely the best way. Less to maintain. Less to operate. Less to break. Almost as fast and will have a lower center of gravity and sit higher in the water. I have a 28ft cigarette set up for a single big block runs 68mph with single big block 485hp 4 sale
