How do you replace the Alternator on a 1998 Chevy Astro Van?
After working almost all day trying to figure this out for myself I found this site:
http://www.automotiveforums.com/t667881-95_astro_how_to_change_alternator_.html
It is as easy as he says but don't try to short-cut it, follow exactly and it really doesn't take that long.
Good luck
How do you know if your alternator on your 91' Geo Prizm is bad?
the only reliable way of determing if your alternator has gone bad is to have it tested by an automotive electricial specialist. That is because most modern alternators have the voltage regulator built in, so just testing to see if it is generating will not tell the whole story. Warning signs of alternator/voltage regulator failure are dead battery, but battery can be charged, lights dimming and getting brighter while driving, and hard starting.
How do you change an alternator on a 1999 cougar?
AS THIS IS A SOD OF A JOB I WOULD RECOMMEND FITTING A NEW ALTERNATOR AS I HAVE HEARD IT AS A COMMON FAILURE PROBLEM ON THESE CARS.
AFTER REMOVING WHEEL, SPLASH SHIELD AND AUX BELT THEN DISCONNECT BATTERY AND REMOVE REMOVE TRACK ROD NUT AND RELEASE TRACK ROD END THEN REMOVE THE DRIVESHAFT!!!!
YOU COULD POSSIBLY DO THE JOB WITHOUT DOING THIS BUT ACCESS IS VERY VERY VERY LIMITED
TRY AND REMOVE DRIVESHAFT INTERMEDIATE BEARING BRACKET. HA HA HA
GIVE UP ON THIS THEN
REMOVE THE TWO 10MM BOLTS AND BRACKET ON SIDE OF ALTERNATOR THAT SUPPORT IT
THEN GET AS MANY 1/2" EXTENSIONS YOU CAN FIND AND A UJ BENDY ONE TO ENABLE YOU TO REACH AND RELEASE THE TWO RETAINING BOLTS 13MM
ONCE THESE ARE RELEASED THEY SHOULD TURN BY FINGER IF YOU CAN REACH THEM. THEY ARE PRETTY INACCESIBLE
REMOVE THE BOLTS AND PRISE THE ALTERNATOR OUT .
REMOVE THE WIRES AND TAKE ALTERNATOR OUT OF CAR.
REPLACEMENT IS A REVERSE OF THIS BUT TO MAKE MY LIFE EASIER I REMOVED THE MOUNTING BRACKET AND FITTED THE NEW ALTERNATOR TO IT AND FITTED IT WITH ONLY 2 BOLTS, THE LOWER ONE AND THE ONE ON THE OTHER SIDE WITH THE SUPPORT BRACKET. YOU WILL SEE HOW WITH IT REMOVED. NAUGHTY BUT EASIER!!!!
THIS ONLY TOOK ME ABOUT 9 HOURS!!!!!!
Why would a belt for the alternator keep breaking and always squeaks?
Check the alignment of belt in relationship to all pulleys. Check the condition of the pulleys. Also make sure the belt being replace is the recommended size. Auto shops have belt measuring tools to check the size of the belt before installing into your vehicle. You may have had a belt installed that was too large in the first place. The squeaks are a sign of a loose belt or a belt not recommended for your vehicle.
Remove Your Negative Battery Cable. Make Sure Everything Is Off In The Car. Also Remove The Hood Light Bulb {the light that comes on when you raise the hood }. Connect A 12 Volt Meter, Or A Test Light ( Most Parts Houses Have These Around $8.00 } Between The Battery Negative Terminal And The Cable End. If The Light Comes On You Have Someting Using Voltage. You May Have A Grounded Wire Ect. You Will Have To Locate The Source Of This Until The Light Goes Out. When It Does, You Should Be OK. Note If Meter Don`t Show Voltage. Have Your Battery Tested Again.
Repair the alternator to battery connections or replace the battery.
How do you remove and replace the alternator on a 2002 Hyundai Sonata?
Disconnect the hose both the top and bottom ones , place new alternator and connect the hose back in place.
How do you replace the alternator on a Pontiac Sunfire?
Remove serpentine belt, by loosening tensioner(15mm box end should do it). Tensioner is located above the water pump and below alternator. Remove the three bolts from alternator mounting bracket, install new alternator, then replace the belt. I've found it easier to use a large flat screw driver as a prybar, while turning the tensioner with a wrench, to place the belt over the alternator pulley.
How do you put the alternator belt back on a 97 maxima after replacing alternator?
Once the alternator is bolted in and hanging on its curved barcket, you slip the belt over the pulleys and pull back on the alternator until it's just snug. Then you find the tensioner bolt/screw for the idler pulley at the end of the bracket. Tighten this bolt until the belt has about 1/8" give at the midway point between pulleys. I think all you need is a 14mm and a 12mm socket with a short extension to do all of it.

How do you replace the alternator in a 1995 Isuzu Rodeo?
If you look on the serp belt routing diagram, you will see a belt tentioner pointed out. Adjust the tentioner so that the belt loosens, and remove it. Disconnect battery. At this point, remove the wires from the back of the alt. As I remember, there are three bolts, 1 10mm, and 2 13mm. (This memory is from a '97 w/3.2 v6 4x4) Remove bolts. The parts store will charge a core if you do not bring the old alt in with you when you purchase the new one, plus, it's easier to compare the two if you have the old one with you. Also, this is a good time to replace the serp belt since you allready have it off the vehicle. Often, alt problems damage battery cells, so that might need replaced as well. Install new alt, reattach wiring, reinstall belt keeping in mind the diagram. If there is not one on your vehicle, it is easily found on the web. Reconnect battery. Mechanical skill needed to accomplish this, scale 1-5, 5 being most difficult, 2. Most novice mechanics can complete this task in under one hour. Tip...do not over torque the nuts on the back of alt for power and ground wiring. 1/2 turn past finger tight is sufficient. Good luck!
You may want to check your wiring to your computer. My voltage regulator was overcharging my car, and as a result my car lost all power and my battery was fully charged, possibly over charged. I would suggest you take it to a shop and have them test your electrical system and see if it is in fact your regulator
How do you replace the alternator on a 98 Oldsmobile Cutlass?
Remove serpentine belt, remove three bolts ,an 2 wires. The alternator will pull up off the motor to remove. Put new alternator in replace bolts, replace wires, an replace the serpentine belt..
It could be a fusable link (Ford seems to like them) but it is more than likely the ignition module ... located in the distributor, under the rotor. A small flat unit with 2 or 3 wires connected to it. Changing that will probably solve the problem.
How do you change an alternator for a ford van 250?
What year do you have? What model year do you have? I changed the alt on my '95 E250 a week ago. You need to remove the radiator. The bottom bolt of the alt is too long to get out with the radiator in. It took me about an hour to do the replacement and get back on the road, after getting the radiator out. Let me know if you have any more issues with it.
The battery symbol lights up on your dashboard car wont start Battery seems ok Replace alternator?
Do the headlamps work while cranking the starter? If not focus on your battery and cables. Jump start the car and have the system tested before you throw more dollar bills at this problem; it could be the alternator but have it tested first.
2 possibilities are 1.) the voltage regulator or 2.) the worst possible answer, wiring gremlins draining on ur elec. system i.e. (improperly wired stereo system) ~Chuck~
How do you change the alternator on a 1985 Jaguar?
Two ways. First one... remove the air pump, remove the A/C and discharge the system, and then the alternator is right there and easy to get out. Takes about 4 or 5 hours this way and an A/C recharge. Second one.. The right way, requires patience. From underneath, slacken and remove the belt. Remove the adjustor bracket. Loosen the power steering hoses from the lower crossmember, and there is a plastic strap that hold the hoses you can't see that will probably break on the top of the cossmember.... no biggie. Now the hard part, remove the bolts on top of the alternator, 1/2" socket and wrench. There are two, front and back. The thing falls out.. sometimes the swaybar will need to be loosened on just the drivers side. Install is the reverse, with some patience. About 3 hours.
