Many times the problem is a valve cover gasket(s) that has leaked oil onto the hot exhaust manifold underneath it. When you have stopped in traffic, or if you are on a hill, etc., the oil that has leaked has a chance to run down on the hot manifold and smells like rubber or oil burning. Most of the time this is just a nuisance but it should be repaired if is bad enough to the point you can smell it in your car or truck.

Because it's hot, it burns gasoline, and there are plastic-coated wires.

Sounds like the catalatic converter is either pluging up or starting to fail. Either way if this is the problem it will either start having worse performance or just stop runing entirly.

I had this same problem and it was a faulty fuel injector. Check to see if it is wet around any of your fuel injectors.

I have a 1995 Mazda 626, I have a similar problem. It dies right at 15 seconds after I hit the gas and remain at 3500 RPM, and I can hardly get up a hill. I have already changed the fuel pump, the injectors were fine, the O2 sensors were fine, changed the air filter, no clogs in the fuel delivery system (yes changed the fuel filter too), changed the plugs and wires, changed the fuel regulator... the only thing left is the catalytic converter is plugged... it's as if my car has asthma, so I'm looking at the Throttle position sensor. Will keep you updated.

I have this cutting out problem and i think Ive managed to diagnose mine to a faulty fuel pump as you can sometimes hear it activate but when you don't the car does not start. but anyway this is what i tried. fortunately my sister has same cars as me, maybe some of these will help you diagnose your problem.

- throttle position sensor

- crankshaft sensor.

- camshaft sensor

- fuel pump fuse/relay

- lambda sensor

- Cat could be broken up and blocked exhaust system causing poor flow.

One of the brake may be dragging or staying on. Check the calipers and hoses.

Malfunctioning emissions system. Get this repaired. Engine probably running rich from a leaking fuel pressure regulator. If there is fuel in the vacuum line the regulator is bad.

As long as you want. The longer you drive it, the more damage you can do to certain parts such as the catylitic converter. Not to mention you are wasting gas. Get it fixed as soon as you can.

I don't think so. Probably your cabin air filter is dirty or the air duct is partially clogged with old leaves and decomposing stuff - that's what happens to me. It might even be a dead animal that crawled up into the engine and died! Anyway, I keep my cabin air filter changed and I use some of the recipes from the following webpage to keep the inside of the car smelling good.

oh please replace the entire engine I tried it and ran into too many problems, had to take out engine 3x`s to keep readjusting something or another. AND you cannot get a crank kit for that engine..they sell them but they don`t work. (I have been a mechanic for 25 yrs)

heater core leak...or hose to heater core... a manual will help with diagnosis and repair, and a shop manual should be available at the local library in the reference section, make copies of the right pages, good luck...:)

Over time debris and other things can collect near the heater core, its possible that something small and plastic has fallen down through the defrost vents and gets hot when the vehicle is running. You may need to disassemble the heater and remove the items and perhaps vacuum it out.

I have seen this problem before. It sounds like it could be the fuel pressure regulator. They are typically located on the fuel rail. If your car is blowing black smoke and missing and is hard to start, that is a good indication that it might be the problem. You can test this by getting a fuel pressure tester and hooking it to the fuel port on the fuel rail. Turn on the key (do not start) and it will build pressure. If the pressure drops off, it may be the fuel pressure regulator. It's a cheap and simple fix. A vacuum line and a bolt is all that holds them in.

Other than getting it professionally detailed, you can rent a carpet/upholstery cleaner, purchase a soap used for pet ordors. If the ordors are not so bad, Fabreeze* works pretty good. If you transport your dog in your car and want to protect the interior from ordors, put down a large towel or blanket before allowing him to ride.

Your heater core might be leaking - stick your fingers under the front edge of the carpet on the passenger side and see if they get wet from the coolant ( CAUTION : DON'T LICK YOUR FINGERS AFTERWARDS ! )
