If by "not to crank" you mean the engine won't turn over, then the problem lies with the battery and/or starter cables. If you mean "not to start", then you need to ensure the plugs are gapped correctly (new plugs are not always pre-gapped) and that the wires are seated and routed correctly. Inspect the area near the plugs and wiring in case you may have disconnected something while changing them out.

Disconnect the fuel line and crank the motor for for 7 to 10 seconds for three tries.
Reconnect the fuel line. Pump up the primer bulb pull, out the choke and attempt to start the motor
In older cars, where your air filter is, there is a door that is suppose to shut when your car is cold. check the sensor on top of the air filter canister by placing a bag of ice on it and look to see if the door in the intake part closes, with the engine running. Look at rubber hoses to see if any of the vaculum lines are leaking. otherwise check out your fuel, timing and spark. The "door" that was being described as part of the air cleaner is the "heat riser" mechanism that is there to prevent carburetor icing during damp-cold weather. If your vehicle runs ok during cold rainstorms you're probably ok there. But carbureted vehicles do have a choke mechanism that provides a little extra fuel during startup. Check that the choke is operating properly. When the engine is cold, check that the choke is completely closed, you may need to touch the gas pedal to release tension to allow the choke to close. BTW, any time you start a carbureted vehicle you should always push the pedal down once and let it back up so that the choke can "set". Also, any vehicle that has poor compression will have a little extra trouble starting. If the above descriptions haven't helped, have the compression checked at a reputable garage to see if that could possibly be your problem. its possible it is anewer vechicle. and the fuel pressure regulater is bad the quick check is to remove vacumne line and see if any fuel drips out.unless its a vortech engine.then you remove large vac line on upper pluemn. some older carburated vechicals it can be primery choke pulloff. hey, it is a Nissan Sentra 2004 1.8 i hate it it takes at most 5 sec of turnover before it starts but then when i shut it of then turn it back on it starts up right away sounds like the fuel pump is leaking off presure the regulator in most cars only changes presure slightly will the pump should hold all the time check for leaks and the next time it sits overnight turn the key on but dont try to start u will hear the pump buzz for 2 seconds turn the key off and on again and on the 3rd turn it should start like usual this will presurize the system and let u know if the pump is loosing presure
I have found this site to be a great resource. I hope someone on the site might have safety comments on the 1997 Mazda Protege. My 19 year old daughter was involved in a critical auto accident in which a , Ford F-150 with way oversized tires made an illegal turn in front of my daughters 1997 Mazda Protege resulting in a combined collision speed of 80 MPH. The nature and physics of this crash was deemed a "head on collision" by reconstruction experts. My daughter was trapped in the vehicle for almost an hour. My wife and I were later informed that this event was the longest and most vigorous effort that the rescue squad had experienced to date to remove a victim from a impacted vehicle. All of this and neither of the airbags were ever deployed. My humble request to this organization or any members, is to foreword or refer any information to us regarding 1997 Mazda's airbag faults if any exist or other structual or safety issues. I thank all for any expertise in this area and eagerly await a response.

Hello. I have a story with the 1997 Mazda Protege's airbag light:
I have had my 1997 Mazda Protege since 1999. I bought it with only 14,000 miles on it and currently have 146,000 miles on the car. It is such a reliable car! I have been completely satisfied with how it has held up for me over the past decade. This past year, I began having problems with the alternator. Something was causing it to freeze up, resulting in the serpentine belt breaking. This belt needs to be turning because it keeps the battery in the car recharging while the engine is running. I ended up replacing the alternator 7 times before the real problem was solved: the belt tensioner was not functioning properly. Well, the point of my story is that every time the belt snapped, my airbag light would come on. I thought that odd. It all made sense to me when my Mazda broke down again on the side of the road. Just before the car stopped running, the airbag light came on. This time, the car broke down because a battery cable was loose. I have deduced that when my Mazda's airbag light comes on, there is a problem with the battery.

How do you tell when a fuel pump on a 1994 Isuzu Rodeo is bad?
Most vehicles have a "port" where you can connect a fuel pressure gauge. It usually looks a lot like a tire valve stem, but make sure it's the fuel line and not the AC. If you connect the fuel pressure gauge then turn the ignition switch on, the gauge should show normal fuel pressure. If it doesn't, either the pump is bad or the filter is blocked. This model has a habit of breaking the power feed wire where it goes into the tank. Do check to make sure it is intact.

How long has the car been sitting? Do any other electronics come on? It's also possible that the battery is now dead. Connect another battery (or car, similar to jumpstarting) in order to see if you just need some battery power to get things going.
Don't bother. Just spend $50 or so on a replacement and be happy.

A car not starting could be a lot of things. If the battery is charged and it wont start than look towards the start circuit.

if you do not have the keyless entry pad and you are unlocking the vehicle manually watch for the vehicles dome lights to turn on if they to not turn on after manually unlocking the door go to the passenger door and put the key in and unlock from that side if the light turns on the alarm is off which means the drivers side door's alarm mechanism has fallin off. there is a switch on the back of the doors lock/unlock key hole and the mechanisam that disables the alarm has possibly fallin off of the back. you will have to take the door panel off and check to see if there is a triangle shaft coming out the back of the lock mechanism if so there is a black peice connected to a wire that should be dangaling inside the door and it needs to be glued back on to the triangle shaft but make sure not to glue to peice that need to rotate. after you glue them together tested it to make sure it works before reinstalling the door panel.

Check that the Starter wire is in good shape. In 97 Grand Ams they were faulty and not giving enough power to the starter. If that doesn't work try the ignition switch or module. then the wiring. See if you can hear things engaging like the fuel injection. That would be a clue that it's trying to get power but something is blocking it. Then check the more expensive things like the starter (some places can test it for free), the alt, the battery. Those are too bad to replace, but why waste the money if it's in the wiring. Sometimes the battery will have enough power to work the lights but not enough to power the starter.

I'm not sure why it does that. I have an '84 Fiero and when I got on the highway and hit over 55 it made a loud pop and then the engine shuts off. After that day I realized I blew the muffler. Hyundai have added a trick to starting the engine - you need to have the clutch pedal in regardless of whether or not the car is in gear. Unless the clutch is in, the engine won't fire.
Trouble code P0340 means:Camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction
Trouble code P0420 means:Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 1)

it may be a neutral safety switch either mis-aligned or bad,among other things. try putting your vehicle on neutral and see if it cranks sometimes when you put the vehicle on park the shift "stick" line up correctly all the way. Other reasons may be a bad relay,a bad ground,bad battery conection,and or bad ignition switch,ect. The neutral "lockout" switch could have failed, the starter may have a bad connection or have failed, there could be a security system that is not working properly.
