Car Starting Problems

There are two SMALL wires on the starter. They are connected wrong.

key wont turnthe ignition

It is either the solenoid or the starter is shot

May need the starter removing and cleaning, the starter may spin fine but not engage . Sounds like the starter dog is stuck and not being thrown to engage with the fly wheel, a common problem easily remedied by a quick clean and light oil of the shaft.

first you cut the power wire to the alarm which should be connected to the battery and then you disconnect the battery fo at least 10 minutes

If you are getting fuel the problem can be that your ingectors are not working check and see if your ingectors are working. When it runs for the 2 seconds it is burning off the starter fluid only, which means it probably isn't actually getting fuel into the chamber. So, I would agree and check to make sure your fuel injectors are firing. If they aren't you may have a bad fuel pump, which should be pushing about 40 psi (I think that is the right pressure). Depending on where you checked fuel flow, it may not have enough pressure to spray through injectors.

for 1 ure alt wudunt stop any car from starting unsless the belt broke in some cases that is. look at fuel first,then after that by the systoms u say ,id luk at crank sensor

Tighten terminal. If terminal is worn (will not become tight at all), replace.

Start by throughly soaking them with a spray penetrating oil. Let sit overnight. Then use a long ratchet and socket to remove the bolts. You may have to work it back and forth to get them off without breaking them.

You need to take your car into a car repair center. It could be many different things that is making it do this.

try to change the ignition coil.

I recently bought a starter for $100 at Auto Zone and paid a guy $60 to install the part. Dont know how much it would really cost if you took it to a shop.

the cam position sensor and ignition coil are inside the distributor. the crank position sensor is located on the bottom front of the engine, behind the belts on the left side.

Perhaps a blown fuel pump. Take a plug wire out and use a spare plug and set it on a piece of metal and crank it and look for the spark. This will eliminate an ignition problem.

Is there any possibility that it overheated? If that's not it, check the electrical connections in the keyswitch and between the keyswitch and the starter and/or battery. Replace the gas pedal assembly and that should take care of the problem. The gas pedal assembly has a small circuit board that some times gets a hair line crack in it and the problem you have comes with that. For you to do it should cost around $145.00 for the part. If the local garage does it it should cost you around $353.00.

The starter motor is at the rear of the engine.

first of all is it injectors or carb, if a carb it could be a bad accelerator pump

Check to see if you are getting fuel.

Most likely a bad starter drive Could be a chipped tooth and ring gear Try rotating the engine with a large socket on the crankshaft (Make sure it is in neutral if std.) If it does not make this noise after turning engine manually probably a chipped tooth

could be a stuck butterfly on either the carb or throttle body depending on if your fuel injected or not. if not that, probably something very serious.

i also have a 97 Taurus and today is started to lose lost of coolent between the oilpan and engine. i cant see wheres coming from but my guess is it could be the freeze plug. or welsh plug. ihave been looking alnight with out luck.

Battery may be on way out

could be out of time , may not be getting compression , may not be getting ENOUGH fuel pressure , you may be getting spark but are the spark plugs sparking when you ground them? Ther really needs to be more detailed information to completely anser this question correctly or atleast more helpfully. Try reposting or updating with year and size of engine and what type of ignition system , fuel delivery system

yes it can and if you run the engine long enough after u jump start it you can recharge the battery

Also, you might want to check to see if the alternator is alright because a bad one might be why your battery is dying unless you know it is a bad battery specifically.

There could be several reasons why a 1996 Sunfire will turn over but not start. The most common reason is a spark plug needs to be replaced. Check with a licensed mechanic for further help.
