your best bet is a haynes manual for that year of truck i got one and it shows the carbs completely torn apart and labeled im assuming its a rochester 4bbl? u can also call rochester up and ask for diagragms

Start at 1 1/2 turns from seat and adjust until you get the best idle

The needle and seat are leaking in your carb and flooding fuel into the engine block. Carb needs to be cleaned and repaired, pressure tested and then drain out oil and oil filter. refill oil and run 10-15 minutes. change oil again and replace oil filter.

A 1988 Dodge van would have throttle body fuel injection.

The problem is not the cleaning but the reassembly. There are very special tools required for that. You really need to call around and find out who does overhaul your type of carburetor.

You need a flexible flat head screwdriver. It looks like a regular screwdriver except the shaft is a tightly wound spring.

As far as an "Idle adjustment screw"-- remove the filter housing for an easier access, but it's quite visible from the Throttle butterfly side on the Carb--- as far as an "Air Idle-Fuel Mixture" on an '03 XL 883??? Sorry Bud--- there IS NONE-- it's a "Fixed Jet Carburator" and it comes from the factory, with a sealed pug cover, over the adjustment screw, located UNDER the backside of the carb, which unless you're a QUALIFIED Mechanic, or have ALOT of expeience with the H-D carbs now installed at the factory, your best is to leave it alone, and let someone who KNOWS where the plug is actually located,can "DRILL IT OUT" without harming the Air-Idle Screw", and once that's accomplished, you can easily adjust your Carb with a fine screwdriver from underneeth the carb, while it's running. Harley-Davidson, has STRICT Emission regulations, that prohibit the adjustment of that Fuel Mixture Screw, due to E.P.A. Standards--- Hope this helps solve the mystery of "Where's It At" !

Turn the fuel on and then take the gas hose that connects to the carberator off and if it leaks gas then the caberator should be receiving it

The needle and seat have dirt stuck between them, the needle and seat are worn out, the float is not adjusted properly or stuck, the float has failed (no longer has buoyancy), excess fuel pressure,

that is a fuel filter

Turn the engine on. Be careful of the fan it caut really mess you up. Get a flat head screw driver. Since you are not sure if the adjustment screws are in the exact same place. Take the left adjustment screw and turn it out all the way but"DO NOT TAKE IT ALL THE WAY OUT!!" Then that the right adjustment screw and turn it all the way in. After doing this take the right adjustment screw and turn it out in half turn increments, and turn it out 5 1/2 half turns out. Then take the left adjustment screw and turn it all the way in and then bring it out 5 1/2 half turns out. Now you screws are the exact same. You as a driver of this auto are going to be the one to decide what idle you want but it should be 4 1/2 half turns out should give you what you are looking for. Some say 3 1/2 half turns but we have found once the car sets for a period of time it will run funny and be harder to start. If all else fails take it to a "Good Auto Shop".

If you have a vacuum gauge available this works well, install the vacuum gauge to a full time manifold vacuum source (not a ported vacuum source) and with engine idling at aprox 600 rpms and at operating temperature, start to turn either air/fuel idle mixture screw in until you see the vacuum start to drop, stop there and turn the screw back out to maximum vacuum and stop. Do the same for the other air/fuel idle mixture screw, turn it in until the vacuum starts to drop then back it out until the gauge reads maximum vacuum then stop. Do this three times on each air/fuel idle mixture screw then adjust the idle to the desired idle speed, probably around 650 rpms.

Lets make it short and sweet... TUrn the two idle mixture screws all the way in (Do not lock tite them). Now turn both screws out 2 full turn. Start engine, adjust idle to around 650-700rpms.

The more you turn screws out the richer, vice versa when turning them in.. leaner

remove gas tank very easy three bolts for tank and 4 Allen screws for carbs

Basic steps:

buy carb rebuild kit
take carb apart
clean really well
put back together with the parts out of the rebuild kit.

Engines need 3 elements to run. Air, fuel, and ignition. Confirm all the components in the fuel delivery system are working correctly: Pump, filter, injectors. Then confirm you are getting spark to your spark plugs. If no spark, check the coil, Ignition control module, pick-up coil (if applicable), and distributor cap and rotor. If you do have spark, make sure the spark plugs are not fouled. Engines almost always have enough air to run unless the air filter gets extremely plugged. If you have all 3 elements at the times it stalls, the air-fuel mixture could be getting affected by something like a vacuum leak, bad sensor(s) (O2, MAP, MAF, TPS and possibly others depending on the car) or physical buildup in the air delivery components. Your question is extremely general. Turning the key off will also cause an engine to stall.

check your floats and make sure there is no rust in the tank and you have sufficient flow through your jets.

Carburetors for 1965 and subsequent models have identification tags with a stamping number. The significance of the number can be explained by a detailed shop manual, as there are many variations due to year and design changes, on top of model differences.

First, you need to find an exhaust gas analyzer and find out what the mixture is when you're running down the road. If you're running rich (too much hydrocarbon in the exhaust) try putting a smaller set of jets in. Be careful, it's easy to go too far and if you do that you'll burn valves and possibly a piston.

Repeat the process until you get a good mixture, then adjust the idle mix.
