as crazy as this may sound, well, here goes. The engine light comes on. Okay.
What alot of people fail to realize is; is that the modern engines are loaded down with vacuum, and oxygen sensors. If you have been allowing your fuel tank to go below the 1/4 of the tank (between empty "E" and a quarter tank) your asking for all kinds of trouble. Moisture forms in the gas tank and is sucked through the fuel line from the fuel pump and the service light sees this as a moisture and so the vehicle's onboard computer is picking this up and disputing this information. Eventually, the sensor (oxygen sensor or dew sensor) may even get so full of moisture that it builds up enough osmosis or water pressure that the engine will actually sputter or miss or may not even run.
So my advice would be to never let it get to the critical point. (Don't wait till it's at a quarter to add fuel.
For now, add stp gas treatment. Put 2 bottles to chase the moisture out, then fill it up with the high super octane.
Put above 90 octane about every 4th fillup. It's good for the engine.
PS: always make sure your gas cap is on good. That's another sure way for moisture to sneak in.

AnswerNothing new. I read from the Internet, somebody said that simply disconnect the battery for couple of minites, then re-connect it. It should work. I just did it, and it stayed off so far. Next tank I filled it up with regular gasoline, and the engine light remained off. I replaced the gas cap but the Check Engine light would come back eventually. I took car to Autozone and had them read the computer code it pointed to the Mass Airflow Sensor. I bought a spray can of Electronic Contact Cleaner (make sure you buy one that is safe for use on plastics). I removed the MAS and sprayed the inside, and let it dry. The engine light has not come on since, and the car does not run rough or hesitate like it did before.Answer
Did you mess with the air filter? Make sure you sealed the Air Filter Assembly cover properly. I got the check engine on while driving and had done two things the day before. Refuelled with 87 octane. Checked if the air filter was dirty. I checked the fuel cap. I checked the air filter assembly and realized i hadent sealed it properly. I sealed it and after 30 mins of driving, the light turned itself off. Mine is a Chevy Prizm 2000. Done 105K.

I had this problem for about 5 years and finally a Toyota dealership recommended cleaning the mass air flow sensor. After they did this the light never came back on and the car actually ran much better. It's been about 1 year now and the problem has not come back.
the ses light flashing indicates a "catalist damaging misfire". basically telling you to avoid further damage, Stop what you are doing. form the basic sounds of your problem I would first start be checking DTC's check the ignition system plugs, wires, cylinder ballance test, and check the fuel system, fuel pressure and flow, fuel filter, injector ballance test.

ok before you do all that do yourself a favor you'll save a huge headache and alot of time and probably money too. its a quick 10-20 mins max way to rule out a common issue.
first let the car warm up a little (190 degrees or more)
next locate the plug for the mass airflow sensor and disconnect it (on the throttle body two bolts positioned from eachother, wide flat harness)
start the engine and go for a drive if you notice any sort of improvement replace or at least clean the mass airflow sensor.
basically what this does is bypasses the sensor and makes the computer adjust air,fuel,timing, etc. based on what the other sensors are reading. but just to warn you the car may still start to die when you come to a stop but shouldn't cut off if this does nothing to help the problem then investigate further

Another area to check especially if you already exhausted all the typical intake, fuel, spark issues are you starving the electrical system for power. As you come to a stop the engine has to rely on less electrical since the alternator is now not putting out to full capacity. The battery is in that loop and helps balance power. The installation of a larger sound system can require more power and there-by robbing the engine of needed voltage. (Typically the added system is connected directly to the battery)Example: 1999 Nissan Maxima with a sub woofer added to the sound system will cause the car to stall at idle if the volume range is set too high.Theres been a lots of unnecessary engine parts changed out chasing a stalling problem. The mechanic drives the car trying to simulate the problem, but doesn't think to turn the sound system up to max.

Oxygen Sensor
There are actually (4) O2 sensors on your truck. If you look inside the wheel wells behind the fender liner, right about where the frame is one O2 sensor, the other is underneath the truck about half way back in relation to the transmission. If you see where the exhaust joints together, you went about 6" too far.
When you start looking at the O2 sensors, they are normally numbered something like "Bank 1 Sensor 1" Bank 1 is on the passenger side; Bank 2 is on the driver's side. Sensor 1 is the upstream sensor (near the frame, between the block and the cat) and Sensor 2 is near the Y-pipe (downstream of the cat).
Normally it is the upstream sensors (sensor 1) that go first. They see the harshest conditions.

You find and repair the leak in the evaporative fuel system. It could be anywhere between the gas cap and the engine. Check all vacuum hoses and lines for cracks or holes.
