There are any number of reasons why a "Check Engine" light is lit. You need to find out what sensor, or sensors, are sending this an error code. You can do this yourself if you have a OBD II reader. In the owners manual it says the check engine light is related to the emissions system. When my check engine light went on it was because my EGR Valve was clogged and simply needed to be cleaned. In addition, if the cap on your gas tank has not been closed properly or has been left open when last filling your tank, may cause a pressure difference, which can also cause the engine light to turn on. Check the fuse first. It is in the fuse center under the hood in position 45. If fuse checks good then check the relay in position 19. You can swap it with one of the other relays.

The system you have on your Camaro is the one of the first system Chevy had where a computer was used. This system uses what was called the "CCC" (Computer Control Command) system. You should have a small flat 5 pin connector under the left side of the dash. This will hold trouble codes that are present when the check engine light is on. With this early system you cannot jump across terminals to read the codes like the later (OBD I) systems. If you have a Snap On MT2500 scanner or know a shop that has one, they will be able to use MULTI-1 connector to plug into the 5 pin block and read your codes.

Although this is old technology most any quality technician can read your codes for you. My experience is that when the check engine light comes on on those early models it's usually related to the EGR system in some way.
