How long to wait for check engine light to go out after replaced?

If the problem was correctly fixed by a mechanic or yourself the check engine light should go out after a few cycles (on/off of running). A mechanic usually shuts the light off with diagnosis tools after the work is completed to check that it does not come on again due to the same error as there is no way to permanently shut the light off. If it is still on the repair done may not have been needed or there are more issues that need attention.

What causes the check engine light to come on when the horn fuse is replaced?

The fuse for the horn and the OBD2 diagnostic computer is the same n recent FORD and Mercury models. The computer controls the check engine light. So replacing horn fuse is also isturbing the OBD2 computer

Why does the check engine light stay on your 1996 explorer?

What is OBD, and what are its benefits? OBD stands for "on-board diagnostics," a computer-based system built into all model year (MY) 1996 and newer light-duty cars and trucks. OBD monitors the performance of some of the engines' major components, including individual emission controls. The system provides owners with an early warning of malfunctions by way of a dashboard "Check Engine" light (also known as a Malfunction Indicator Light or MIL, for short). By giving vehicle owners this early warning, OBD protects not only the environment but also consumers, identifying minor problems before they become major repair bills. How do I know the OBD system is working correctly? When you turn on the ignition, the "Service Engine Soon" or "Check Engine" light should flash briefly, indicating that the OBD system is ready to scan your vehicle for any malfunctions. After this brief flash, the light should stay off while you drive as long as no problems are detected. If so, you'll be glad to know that your vehicle is equipped with an early warning system that could save you time, money, and fuel in addition to helping protect the environment! What does it mean if the light turns on while I'm driving? If the light comes on and stays on, the OBD system has detected a problem. Your vehicle might have a condition that wastes fuel, shortens engine life, or causes excessive air pollution. If left unaddressed, these conditions could also damage your vehicle and lead to increasingly expensive repairs. For example, OBD can identify a loose or missing gas cap (which wastes fuel and contributes to smog) or engine misfire (which can lead to severe or permanent engine damage). What should I do if the light stays on? There is no cause for panic. The vehicle is just telling you to seek attention soon. When you reach your destination, make sure the gas cap is not loose or missing. Always turn off your engine when refueling. If the light does not go out after a few short trips following gas cap replacement or tightening, have your vehicle serviced by a qualified repair technician soon! Delaying assistance could lead to more expensive damage. What does it mean if the light is blinking? If the light is blinking, a severe engine problem such as a catalyst-damaging misfire is occurring and should be addressed as soon as possible. You can still drive safely, but should minimize your time on the road. Try not to drive the vehicle at high speed or with excess weight (such as towing or carrying heavy equipment).

How do you check the codes in a 1995 Chevy S-10 2.2?

92 is PRE-OBDII, so you'll have to get a GM specific code reader. They aren't too expensive, usually about $35 - $45 depending on where you get them. They include instructions and diagnostic codes. The code readers generally plug in below and to the left of a GM steering column, just above where your left shin would be if you were driving.

== ==

Actually, the 95 was one of the first with an OBDII, so a ODBII code reader will work, but most auto part stores will not check it, even though it has an ODBII (you can lie and tell them it is a 96 and they'll do it). The code reader attaches below the steering column.

What would cause a check engine light to come on on a 1997 mercury grand marquie with 175000 miles try to get emissions test done on vehicle but wont pass while check engine light is on 46 ltr engine?

There are any number of reasons why a "Check Engine" light is lit. You need to find out what sensor, or sensors, are sending this an error code. You can do this yourself if you have a OBD II reader. This instrument plugs into a receptacle located beneath the steering wheel. It will give you the code. These readers can be purchased at an auto parts store. They come with instructions and will tell you what sensor the code refers to. Then you can effect the repair. These readers allow you to erase the trouble code and turn off the "Check Engine" light as well. All 1996 and later autos made for sale in the USA have this OBD II receptacle in the same location. Very good advise, but the DLC connectors are not in the same location. Yours will be below steering wheel to the right next to center console.

Your local Suzuki dealer is unable sort out the check engine light which is on on your 1993 Suzuki Sidekick any ideas?

2000 Honda Passport what do they use for a check engine light?

In the owners manual it says the check engine light is related to the emissions system. When my check engine light went on it was because my EGR Valve was clogged and simply needed to be cleaned. There are a lot of threads here and other places explaining how to replace and or clean an EGR Valve. It is a very simple replacement to perform.

1993 Grand Cherokee check engine codes?

On any Jeep/Chrysler up to 1995, all you have to do is put your key into the ignition, DO NOT START, turn it to the on, then off, then on, then off, then back to the on. Very soon you will see the check engine light flash. The first set of 2 flashes should be a "Flash-short pause-Flash-Flash-Long Pause, this is a code 12. Code 12 is very normal and should be there. Watch for other flashes after this one. The finale flashes will be a series of 5 flashes-short pause-5 flashes, which is a code 55 that means all codes have been retrieved. Many people have trouble understanding how to read the codes, if you just write down ALL of the flashes and separate the first 2 flashing numbers and the last 2 flashing numbers then you should be able to figure out what the other flashing numbers are. From there you can find out what the codes mean by going to many places on the internet, this is one of them. http://allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.HTML or you can even find them at autozone.com I hope this helps you out.

What causes the engine light to come on 2004 Mazda 3?

Same thing as any other car, your on board computer has detected a problem with the emissions control system or other engine controls. Have the OBD codes read to determine the problem

In addition, if the cap on your gas tank has not been closed properly or has been left open when last filling your tank, may cause a pressure difference, which can also cause the engine light to turn on. From experience, even after properly closing the cap, it may take a while for the light to turn off (my guess is that it takes a while for the internal pressure to adjust).

Check engine light plus on ETS light on plus car jerks when put in gear?

ETS stands for Electronic Traction System, check your owners manual. It controls your car's slippage on ice and other surfaces. Something might have happened with your ETS as your service engine light is on. Jerking in gear could be a torque converter problem or bad cluthes in the tranny.

************************

The Jerking in gear is caused by the SAME problem as what is causing your "ETS off" light to come on. If any aspect of the ETS system fails the entire thing wont start up and will cause a chain of other things to "appear" wrong when you run the car. More often then not this is caused by a bad sensor that can easily and cheaply replaced.

Don't listen to these goofballs who are telling you you need new transmissions, clutch's, or throttle bodies. That will just be money down the drain.

HOWEVER, if you keep driving your car when the "ETS off" light comes on, you run the risk of causing actual damage to those areas and more, THEN you might need to replace those. But initially THEY are not part of the problem. Fix it early, fix it right, and you avoid more chain reaction problems down the road.

How do you retrieve the check engine light in a 1981 Z28 Camaro?

The system you have on your Camaro is the one of the first system Chevy had where a computer was used. This system uses what was called the "CCC" (Computer Control Command) system. You should have a small flat 5 pin connector under the left side of the dash. This will hold trouble codes that are present when the check engine light is on. With this early system you cannot jump across terminals to read the codes like the later (OBD I) systems. If you have a Snap On MT2500 scanner or know a shop that has one, they will be able to use MULTI-1 connector to plug into the 5 pin block and read your codes.

Although this is old technology most any quality technician can read your codes for you. My experience is that when the check engine light comes on on those early models it's usually related to the EGR system in some way.

Good luck.
