Get car scanned for codes at most parts stores for free. Could be a CPS crank position sensor or cam position sensor. If crank sensor is bad, will not start. Get codes checked first.
Is it safe to drive to dealer with engine light on?
Generally, yes.
If the light is on solid then almost cetainly so. However if the engine light is flashing on and off then you are possibly damaging the catalytic converter. Not good.
Just make certain that the oil is full and the engine is not overheating. Also do not drive the car if it dies out or is acts unsafe in any way.
I have lots of people drive cars into the shop here with the check engine light on. Most are basic problems ..O2 sensors, Hvac leaks...
Again, if you are afraid to drive the car, then it is probably worth just towing it as it can be a bit scary to drive a car that you dont trust.
How do you reset check engine light on 2006 dodge 1500?
A national chain auto parts store can do this for you.
Bank 1 is the bank of the engine that contains #1 cylinder. Bank 2 is the other bank. Sensor 1 is located before the catalytic converter. Sensor 2 is located after the cat converter.
Will your car fail inspection if the check engine light is on?
In NJ your car will fail inspection if the light is on. In fact, your car will fail inspection up to 200 miles after you have the car serviced due to a problem that resulted in the service engine light being on. I had the service engine light on because of a faulty gas cap. I had the car serviced and then a day later took it to inspection. The car failed because the computer had not reset itself. I was told to come back after driving the car 200 miles because it often takes that long for the computer to show that everything is working fine.
Why would the cruise control not work when the check engine light comes on?
Because whatever has caused the light to come on also effects the cruise from working properly. Have the system checked for codes.
Sure.
The "check engine" light indicates that the computer has detected a "fault", meaning that there is something wrong with one or more of the sensors or a sensor has detected a problem.
Connect a code scanner appropriate to your vehicle (newer vehicles use OBD2, older vehicles are manufacturer specific) and see what the computer is trying to tell you.
You can usually go to a local auto parts retailer and "borrow, rent or buy" a code scanner. Sometimes they'll even help you connect it and read what it means... if you're nice to them.
Good luck.

How do you turn off or reset a check engine light for a 1999 Saturn SL2?
I had a 1999 Saturn SL2 and my husband took both the battery cables off and then replaced them. This caused the check engine soon light to go off. == other answer== Depending on what triggered the light to go on, you could fix it, and the light has a chance to go out on it's own (I have had mine come on 4 times , 2 of which I have had to reset with a diagnostic computer from a local parts place, once it went out on it's own [bad spark plug] and THIS time it's still on) the answer above is correct only to the point of the next self-diagnostic check from the car, if something is still wrong, the light will come back on The " check engine light" is by far one of the most misunderstood technological advances It is a warning light that is illuminated when there is a problem affecting the EMISSIONS of the vehicle.. Don't let it bother you as it is a good thing once you understand it. One point that was brought up a recent meeting of technicians was that the amount of hydrocarbons is greater when the gas cap is left off than when the engine is running. Hydrocarbons are part of pollution emitted as gasoline evaporates. Going a step farther, one facet of the emission system is the "Evaporative" portion. This is when the fumes from the gasoline are leaking from the system into the outside air. This is one part of the emission system that can trigger a check engine light. I would say a small percentage of the vehicles that have a check engine light are the result of a loose or inadequate gas cap. But understand that many scenarios are possible with the "check engine light" The vehicle's powertrain computer (note that some vehicles have multiple computers aside from the powertain computer) will run a series of self-tests. They will only run under certain criteria. And they are different from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some self-tests or
How to reset service engine light on a 2000 impala?
you need a obd 2 diagnotic tool. about 125.00 from auto parts store. you plug it in to diagnostics device (under dash) and clear it. it is a great tool for diagnosing alot of other stuff also. or you can go to a service station and they will reset it for about 25.00.
AnswerWhen the check engine light came on it stored a diagnostic code in your car's computer, it also stored information such as engine temp, rpm, what system affected(exhaust, ignition, etc.), etc. If the car goes through the same scenario as it stored in the computer three times without the problem happening again the check engine light will turn off by itself. AnswerIf you know that nothing is wrong or have fixed the problem yourself and want to reset the light, disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, this will reset all fault codes.THE REAL ANSWER
Look in the owners manual, for all the correct steps, but here is the gist of it. Push in and hold down the button for the radio station turner. It will light up with a few options in the LCD of the radio. scroll through by "sel" and you will find a reset selection.
Pull the codes from the computer, match the code to the troubleshooting procedure, follow the procedure to find the source. Repair the source, light will go out if that was the only problem. There are "monitors" or self tests the computer runs the car through a drive cycle, if a problem occurs, it may not run all of the self tests until that problem is taken care. Therefore, another problem may exist. It is emission related. OR hook up a scanner that is capable of clearing codes, and hope that none are still active. Disconnecting the battery can create other headaches and will not likely solve your dilemma. Best bet is to contact the local snap-on dealer and have him refer you to a known good shop that specializes in this technology-he will know. The " check engine light" is by far one of the most misunderstood technological advances by the public. This is an needed in-depth understanding for the public. It is a warning light that is illuminated when there is a problem affecting the EMISSION SYSTEM only. Emission system being the pollution control system. This is when the fumes from the gasoline are leaking from the system into the outside air. This is one part of the emission system that can trigger a check engine light. I would say that about 7% of the vehicles that have a check engine light are the result of a loose or inadequate gas cap. But understand that many scenarios are possible with the "check engine light" The vehicle's powertrain computer (note that some vehicles have 17 different computers) will run a series of self-tests. They will only run under certain criteria. And they can be vastly different from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some self-tests are not run until preceding ones have run successfully. So if there is a problem in one particular area that is preventing another self test from running, you can have a situation where one problem is fixed, but another still exists. If you fix a problem and drive the car through a drive cycle that sets the monitor (or self test) the light will go off as it passes that criteria that triggered it in the first place. After 1996, the auto industry went to a idea called OBD II (on board diagnostics). This was to get all the manufacturers onto a similar plane for troubleshooting and powertrain control. While they still differ vastly, many corrections and adaptations were made for technicians to better fix the check engine light problems. Prior to this there were so many different and poor troubleshooting data from a check engine light problem that resolving the problem was much more difficult. Many early warning light of this nature were set to illuminate based on mileage. An Oxygen sensor was one of the things that were meant to be replaced when that mileage was hit. This is much like many current "Change oil lights

First, I'm not a mechanic. however, my experience with the same problem may give insight for you regarding my 2001 Nissan Fronter XE. It was meticulously maintained under warranty scheduling. The first time the light went on early in my truck's life-computer saw nothing, dealership said it was unusual for the young age of the vehicle, cleared the codes, light off. The second time-computer diagnosis approx. 50,000 mi, charged for computer diagnosis, nothing determined, reset the computer, light off afterwards. Third time, approx 1000 mi later, light went on, dealership going to charge for computer reset again and I reminded them they'd done that recently. They then decided that it was the catalytic converter. I don't know why this wasn't determined through all the other computer checks. Maybe the computer checks can't detect malfunction of the converter so everything else has to be fixed and then there's a leap of faith? Replaced the catalytic converter - no light and into 135000 mi. Good Luck.
What should you check if the check engine light is on and the P0740 code came up?
Check the troubleshooting chart that corresponds to that code. You'll be in same boat as everyone else, but you will probably have to pay for it.
From your explanation, I think you're describing the glow light plug on a diesel. It should only come on when you first switch the ignition on. Wait for it to go out before you turn the key to the "start" position.
I believe it doubles as a tail light indicator as well, if it comes on and stays on, one of more of your tail lights are burned out.
Answerthat is the check engine light the car has an onboard computer that tells you when something is wrong. have it checked out by a mechanic Answersounds like your check engine lightWhat's your oil pressure like? I'm not asking how much oil you have... is your oil pump able to provide enough oil volume and pressure to allow the engine to run properly? If not, the engine will knock and tear itself apart. Oil pressure will reduce if the engine bearings are worn and the oil leaks out so fast that the oil pump can't keep up.
Why is the Check Engine Light ON in a 1993 Mark VIII?
The "Check Engine" light means that the computer has stored a fault code. You need to use a code scanner to read the fault code. Code scanners can be borrowed, rented or purchased at most auto parts retail stores.

How do i Turn off 2004 dodge stratus check engine light?
with an obdII scanner. stop by an auto zone they should check it for free.
Auto Zone is not supposed to reset your computer as I've experienced and/or been told so...........Disconnect your negative battery terminal (you can do it under the hood at the jump off connectors) for a minute or so. This will actually clear the code for the light being on but not take the codes out. Go to Auto Zone and they will scan the 'puter and give you a read out of the codes and problems associated with them.
