EGR Systems

When the temperature in the combustion chamber becomes extremely hot, nitrous oxides are formed, which then turn into smog. In order to reduce such occurrence, the exhaust gas recirculation system minimizes the temperature in the combustion chamber.

Where is the EGR valve on a 1992 Chevy lumina 31 v6 and will cleaning it out stop the car from lurching or jerking around while accelerating?

EGR shouldn't be opening while accelerating. When was the last time you had a tune-up? You know, like Spark-Plugs, Wires, Air Filter, Fuel Filter, Clean Fuel Injectors etc... Sounds like you need a tune-up!

How do you replace the EGR on a Plymouth Breeze?

Replacing 98 Plymouth Breeze EGRThe EGR valve on the 98 Breeze (2.4L) is located at the back drivers-side of the engine. One of the vacuum lines from the brake booster attaches to it. -> There should be an emissions routing diagram by the radiator that illustrates where it is located. <-

1. Loosen the hose clamps on the two main airboxes (one at the front of the car and the other above the transmission on the drivers side).2. Disconnect the hose from the front airbox to the engine valve cover.3. Loosen the clamp that attaches the front airbox to the carburetor (there is a little space below that airbox that allows for a hand and screwdriver to get in there).4. Remove the airboxes - the front one first, then the back/side one. You should now be able to see the EGR valve at the drivers side rear corner of the engine!5. Remove the two bolts that attach the metal exhaust line to the EGR.6. Remove the hose from the top of the diaphragm - pry it carefully from the diaphragm. You should see it behind the engine near the top.7. Remove the bolts that hold the EGR to the engine block. You may need to disconnect one of the old EGR vacuum lines if it wraps around any other line.8. Install in the opposite order with a new EGR engine-side metal gasket.9. Reset the ODB-II computer.DONE AND GOOD LUCK.

How do you test the egr valve?

The question is,"How do you check an Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve?" What I would do first (And am currently doing on a 1993 Ford Taurus 3 litre V-6)is pull the vacuum tube from the EGR valve, blip the throttle or have someone place the car in gear and accelerate LIGHTLY WITH FOOT FIRMLY ON BRAKE AND PARKING BRAKE APPLIED and see if you can feel vacuum pull in the tube. If no, like the Taurus, the EGR control valve or motor, which is usually electric, may be defective. Another step would be to connect a length of vacuum hose to the disconnected EGR valve, then have that someone accelerate like before, but this time, and for lack of a better word, suck lightly on the hose; the engine should start to run slightly roughly or the pinging will stop...or, if the diaphragm is defective you will not be able to pull vacuum; that is, it will be like sucking air through a straw. Third, if the EGR valve is stuck, you will have vacuum when you pull on the hose, but nothing happens with the engine. Hope this has helped. Kevin NC

What are the symptoms of a bad egr valve in a 1995 windstar?

First, lets talk a little bit a bout what does an EGR system do. The EGR valve either electric or mechanic is a component part of the emission system. It was designed to let back into the running engine a very small portion of burnt gases in order to decrese the posibilities of Nitrus Oxide formation (NOX). The PCM sends a signal to the EGR valve to open it over 1500RPM so the engine wont feel the burnt gas and fail. If the gas enters the engine below 1500RPM, the engine will fail and hesitate because a small portion or burnt gases will enter the intake manifold and contaminate the air/fuel mixture and a very nasty smell will come out of the exaust pipe do to impropper combustion. Also, the manifold absolute preasure will be nearly the same as that of the ambient and would probbaly make the engine to stall. If the EGR is stuck closed, no symptoms would be felt as from the engine funtionability perspective but if we talk about an electric EGR valve, the CHECK light will turn on and the PCM will create a DTC.

Hope this helps.

Good luck

Is there anyway to be able to see or test a wiring harness to see if it needs replaced on a 1985 5.0 mustang?

I'm thinking your car was in a wreck and it may be shredded right? You can see the main harness if you look for it from the the fuse boxes to everywhere else it goes and the branches on it are like a tree. It is usually taped up and wrapped in black. Testing is easier than replacing if it is not destroyed. You need an electrical diagram and learn where the components are located that the wiring goes to. And learn where that circuit goes to the next terminal point or fuse point. You check it point to point with a volt meter if voltage is applied or an ohm meter if you're looking for a completed circuit which is basically a short. Most electrical failures are not because "it's got a short in it" - but because a connection has broken loose in some way and somewhere.

Where is the egr valve on a 1999 Maxima?

I am no mechanic, but I have a 1999 Nissan Maxima and I recently did some work on my EGR valve. When you pop open the hood, look at the side of the engine on your right (driver's side). Underneath all the air intake stuff that connects to your air filter is the EGR valve. Mine has a grey plastic top with an electrical connector attached to it (this top is about an inch and a half to two inches in diameter), a middle section below this that is made from a silvery metal with two rubber hoses plugged into it, and below this a bottom section with a metal pipe maybe three quarters of an inch in diameter connected to it. The metal pipe curves around and goes back behind the engine. There are two bolts that the valve is mounted on. To remove the valve, first you have to get a bunch of hoses and stuff out of the way to expose it, then disconnect the hoses and electrical connector from the valve, then disconnect the metal pipe connected to the base, then remove the two nuts on the two bolts. There is a gasket between the EGR valve and the engine which you will have to replace. It cost me less than two dollars. This also worked on my 1996 Maxima which means it's good for earlier and likely newer Maxima's.

Where is the EGR valve located on a 2001 Mazda Protege 2.0 engine?

Where is the EGR valve on a 2001 3.0L V6 Chrysler Sebring?

Looking at the engine from the front/top it is in the center between the firewall and the rear of the engine near the throttle input. actually very east to replace. On coupe, it is NOT easy to replace. The entire intake manifold must be removed to gain access.
