This is what I've found. I've also found a TON of other ones at various autoparts stores online. Mine is a VIN "E" but that didn't differentiate it from any of the other search results. It's located ALL the way at the back of the valve cover on the drivers side. AND it's a $20 part....ugh Whereas the "normal" looking ones run about $3 at Advance Auto....

Follow the coolant feed line back the to water neck/thermostat housing, the EGR valve will be the 3" canister-style object in front of that.

On the rear of the engine block next to the firewall about 1/2 way down. You can see the 10mm bolts from above, (at least the top one), and access them with your left hand using either a 1/4" drive, or box end wrench.
The lower bolt is 1 1/2" directly below the top one. Remember to buy the gasket in advance.
After unbolting the EGR valve, if you are re-using it, make sure all of the old gasket material is off of the mating surface. I used emery cloth held onto a piece of wood, and just rubbed the valve across it until the gasket material was gone.
I like the metal gasket for a $couple more online.

the egr on a 2000 ford ranger is to the right of the air breather - follow to the end and /you will see two 10 m/m nuts that holds it on and then there is a larger bolt on the back side / take off the larger nut off first then the 10 mm bolts / note you may need to spray some pv blaster on all the bolts before taking off any/ take off the larger bolt off first and then the smaller ones also / make sure you clean out port after taking egr off / use round brass brush to clean out port.this will allow your computer to reset off on engin check light/ if it don/t reset go to your local auto zone and they can turn out light.
Location depends on the engine type, IE 2.3, 3.0 or 4.0 liter. The above location is for the 4 liter and possible 3 liter. The 2.3 liter 4 cylinder engine location is on the back left side (driver's side).

Most EGR valves must be replaced with factory dealer parts in order to pass state emissions. Aftermarket valves will not pass the test. Keep this in mind when you finally replace it. Sorry I cannot give you details on how to do it.

Carbon build up can be scraped and blown out with compressed air.A pinhole in the rubber diaphragm (a common problem)can be fixed using high temperature silicone sealant. Apply silicone sealant with a toothpick to the hole while sucking on the vacuum hose to draw the sealant into the hole. Let dry overnight. Black smoke coming out the tailpipe usually indicates excessive fuel is being burned weather it be a gas or diesel engine. Oil will usually be blue. The first place for a DIY to look I suggest would be the air intake system especially the air filter. If you have an older vehicle that has a carburetor be sure the choke is fully opened when engine is at operating temperature and look down the venturis to see if fuel is pouring in at an idle. It should not show fuel delivery thru the hi-speed circuit at an idle. If you have a fuel injected vehicle check the fuel pressure if you know how and have the computerized control system diagnostics performed; you'll need a scan tool. If the engine has a mis-firing cylinder that also will cause excessive black smoke and have that 02 sensor showing rich. If the 02 sensors show a RICH condition I suggest you see first what is causing that rich condition before you go ahead and spend your hard earned coins on a new 02 sensor(s)! My experience has shone that if an 02 sensor shows a rich condition and you have black smoke pouring out the tailpipe the 02 sensor is doing its' job and replacing it won't do the fix.

My guess would be that the catalytic converter is plugged, or maybe some other exhaust blockage. The exhaust cannot go through the system and the car stalls. As it "cools off" the pressure is actually equalizing, or coming back to atmospheric and the exhaust can flow freely again, for a while. I would check this scenario out, could be something to it.
