How do you replace a tie rod end?
I just replaced the outer tie rod end on a 98 ranger. The task was difficult but not impossible. You have to pull the cotter pin and loosen the bolt on the bottom of the ball joint. (mine was too rusty and stripped so it had to be cut off i used a sawzall but a grinder would be better) Then you need to rent or buy the special fork which you can get at an auto parts store. Use the fork to get the joint out of the steering knuckle. Once that's out i had to use two vice grips one on the outer tie rod and one on the inner tie rod connecting piece. Find a place to put the vice grip that is holding the inner tie rod connector piece so it is secure and you have leverage to turn the tie rod end. Remove the tie rod end and the bolt at the end of the tie rod and put the new one on at the same place they were when you took them off. You will need an alignment anyway once you replace it but you want it close so it isn't impossible to drive to get the alignment. Then put the ball joint through the hole and tighten down. Put the new cotter pin in the bolt.
How do you install an ignition switch on a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix?
How to Replace Ignition Switch '97-'03, Found at http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=653340
(You do not have to do anything to the airbag to remove the ignition.)
You will need an inverted Torx socket set to remove some of the screws.
BEFORE BEGINING THIS REPAIR REMOVE THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL FROM THE BATTERY. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO DO THE REPAIR WITHOUT DOING THIS.
Look inside the slot where the tilt steering knob is located. There is a black metal piece where the knob inserts into the tilt mechanism. Pry it back slightly with a small screwdriver. One from an electronics tool set will work. While you have it pried, pull the knob out and it should release.
Remove the two screws from the bottom of the steering column cover and remove the cover.
Remove the two screws that hold the top steering column cover in place.
Insert the ignition key into the key cylinder and turn the key clockwise to the start position. Nothing will happen because you have disconnected the battery prior to starting this project. Lift the top steering column cover being careful not to break it because it is still held in place by the ignition key cylinder. You will see with your mirror near the back end of the cylinder housing a small hole. Stick a small Allen wrench in the hole, this will release the key cylinder so that it can be pulled out. Once the key cylinder is removed the column top cover is free to be removed.
The black box below the key cylinder with all of the wires coming out of it is the ignition switch that you are changing. Look at the switch you have purchased for this repair. Notice that the small white plug with two wires attached has a tab on the side that can be pushed down, this is the release for the plug-in. Using your mirror you will see that plug-in against the ignition switch housing where it plugs in. Using a small screw driver press the release tab in against the plug and rotate the plug 90 degrees to the right to remove it. To do otherwise may break the plug.
Remove the plug from the white key release device by inserting a small screw driver and pressing the release tab on it.
Undo the two screws holding the ignition switch.
Undo the plug at the opposite end of the ignition switch by unscrewing the bolt in the center of the plug and unplugging it. (Use 7mm socket)
There is a black wiring plug on top and a gray one on the bottom of the ignition switch plug that need to be removed. This is done by prying the center of the plug case where it meets the ignition harness plug while sliding it forward. Note: Black and gray plugs sandwich the ignition switch plug. They are the plugs for the multifunction switch.
Cut any tie wraps holding the wire harness in place and feed it out of the dash.
To install do the reverse of the above, and tie wrap the new harness into place. Be sure to properly align the key cylinder when replacing it in the housing and if the key will not come out of the cylinder there is a silver key release button at the bottom of the white device in front of the ignition switch. Press it and the key will come out. Also when replacing the ignition switch make sure that the slot in the switch is properly aligned with the corresponding part on the steering column that fits in the slot.

What is the firing order for a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am 3.4L?
This answer is from the Haynes Repair Manual for GM Pontiac Grand AM 1999 and 2000 1st coil terminal as you stand at front of car L>R 5-2-3-6-4-1 2nd firing order of sparkplugs as you stand at front of car L>R rear bank (towards firewall) 1-3-5 front bank L>R (side to radiator) 2-4-6 (this is for the 3.4L V6--204cubic inch engine)
You CAN just add a little at a time until the AC runs without cycling on and off, but don't add too much or you can destroy the seals of the compressor. That process is not recommended, especially since gauges are relatively inexpensive. To accurately charge the system, yes a meter is required.
Mazda 323 1993 hatchback turns over but won't start?
Your distributor might be shot, in which case you will need to have it rebuilt. The part itself is not that expensive, but the work is labor intensive and could run the cost way up. Remove the fuel filter and check for the presence of fuel pressure. Removing the fuel filter entirely is not necessary. You can disconnect the fuel line from the discharge side of the filter. With the help of a friend, place a catch can in place and turn on the ignition. Turn the engine over if necessary. If no fuel comes out of the filter, the fuel pump is probably not working. Mazda was smart enough to put an access panel under the rear seat so the fuel pump can be reached without removing the fuel tank. The fule pump should hum from a few seconds when the ingnition is first turned on. If there's no hum, use a test light or meter to check power to the pump. If there's power but no hum, the pump will need to be replaced. If there's no power to the pump, check your fuses and the fuel pump relay. If there is fuel flowing thru the filter, the problem could be in the ignition system. Proper trouble shooting would depend on exactly what the engine is doing when you try to start it. Hopefully you have someone at your disposal who has a little knowledge about cars. The problem could be simple or it could be complicated.

Where is the transmission dip stick on a 1999 Pontiac Grand AM GT?
There isn't one. You have to get it up to operating temps and then put it up on jack stands, crawl under it and pull the check plug located on the right side of the tranny next to where the right drive shaft comes out. it should be level with that hole so add fluid either through that hole or the fill plug on top until it comes out of the hole the plug it back up and you are good to go

What does the service vehicle soon light mean on Pontiac aztek?
"service vehicle soon" commonly known as a "check engine light" indicates that the car's computer has detected something out of the ordinary. Because this computer monitors all of the variables related to engine function it's impossible to say without a scan tool. You can go to a mechanic and pay him hundreds of dollars to plug your car into a small handheld computer and read the error codes, or you can take it to an auto parts store and borrow their tool to do it yourself. Advance Auto and Autozone usually have them, not sure about other parts stores.
Until that is done it's hard to say. When the codes are read, copy them down, or get a printout, that will give you clues to make an educated guess at what the problem is.
Unfortunately error codes can be a sign of engine trouble, bad gas, or sometimes they're simply the result of the little car gremlins getting bored. I recently drove my Aztec with an "Emissions controll error, evap circuit malfunction" error for about 6 weeks, resetting it a couple times a week, but never keeping it off for more than a day. Then about a week ago it went out on its own and hasn't come back...
After scanning, reset or clear the codes and see if it stays off, or if the same codes reoccur. It may have been a one time, or short term problem.
**- The answer that was given is related to another indicator called "Service ENGINE Soon". I believe the question was specifically asked about the Service VEHICLE Soon".
For Pontiac these are 2 different indicators and as you might have guessed the Engine light has to do with drive train components, fuel system, exhaust sensors etc. The Vehicle indicator has more to do with body components such as light bulbs, braking systems, traction control etc.
I would agree with the original answer that the best thing to do is call around to the parts stores such as Autozone and see if they do free code scans and get the diagnosis. Then you can decide if you want to tackle it yourself or take it to a shop with specific details about what has to be fixed.

How do you reset the change oil light in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am?
To reset "CHANGE OIL" light, turn the ignition switch to the run position without starting the engine. Fully depress and release the accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds
This method didn't work for me. After changing the oil in my brother's 2001 Grand Am this morning, I tried it about a dozen times with no luck. Wound up calling the local Pontiac dealer for help and the instructions I was given worked like a charm. Do this...1. Open the Driver's side interior fuse box and find the red reset button. There's a little diagram on the inside of the plastic pop-off cover that tells you where it's located. On my brother's car it was marked "oil/tire reset".
2. Put the key in the ignition and turn it to the "ON" position. Do not actually turn the car on.
3. Push the red reset button once and let go.
4. Wait a second or two for the "Change Oil" light to start blinking.
5. Push the red reset button again but this time hold it down until you hear the chime/beep/complaining sound. The "Change Oil" light should turn off as soon as you let go of the button.
6. Put the cover back on the fuse box and you're good to go.
2000 Nissan Altima won't start?
This is a pretty vague question. Are you mechanically inclined? Have you had any tests run on the car. Basic test would be check the voltage on the battery, car running and engine off. Will the engine crank? Check your air filter to make sure it is not stopped up. Check to see if you have any spark going to the spark plugs.Check for fuel delivery. Is the check engine light on.What happened prior to the engine not starting?Do you have antitheft system? I would need more information to be of any further help. I hope that is a start. There are two websites that might be useful to you. One is www.nissanhelp.com and the other one is www. pdftown.com. both of these websites have a lot of good information on technical service bulletins, recalls, specifications, technicql manuals, maintenance information. You will have to register on them to be able to login. Hope this helps!

What is the cost to replace an alternator in a 2005 Pontiac grand am?
it should be somewhere between $120-150. just make sure you have your old one out because you have to return it to get you core charge. they take the broken ones and rebuilt them. it'll save you about $60. or you can go to a salvage yard and get one for around $30-50. if your low on cash that's the best route. i get mine from advanced auto. they have the best prices and they carry ac delco. in my opinion that's the best manufacture. good luck!
1. Check the fuse. If the fuse is good, and everything else associated with that circut is operating, you've probably got a bad blower motor.
3.Sure enough, My 95 Dakota had corrosion on the heater coils making it quit. Thanks to #2 answerer it saved me alot of grief THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Similar thing has happened to my 2003 Dakota. Thanks for saving me a dealer charge!
I also had this problem with my 2003 Dakota. Only difference is it just went. No fan settings worked. Also on the 2003 model it is located on the passenger side under the glovebox. Still only a 10 -15 minute fix. Came across a really good link when looking this up and thought i would take the time to share since it save me allot of money on what I thought would be a costly repair. Check the link below for detailed info on this problem.

THANKS!!! To all the people who took the time to share and help me fix this and save hard earned cash.!!

This answer is "spot on" for a 1996 Dodge Dakota V6. I only wish I had checked WikiAnswers BEFORE I bought a very expensive [$300] A/C-Heater control switch. My blower worked intermittently on the Medium and Very High contacts of my control slide switch. When it went out completely, I checked the fusing and found them to be okay, so I thought the switch finally failed. You cannot buy the switch, alone, since it is part of a control system. When I replaced it and my blower STILL did not operate, I thought I had a bad blower and went looking for a wiring diagram on the Net. When I found this answer, I check my firewall and sure enough, I found the nearly burned out contact. Now, I'm off to get a replacement.
How do you find and fix the horn on a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am?
It could possibly just be the fuse that powers the horn, open the fuse box, which is on the dash, the driver's side. The fuse will be labeled "HORN" it should be a yellow or orange fuse, with 15 amps...pull the fuse out and check it, hopefully it's nothing more than that, a box of fuses costs only a couple of bucks...
