I have had the light come on when I had a headlight out. me too. 9/15/05

this could be because of a bad connection with the power to the gauges. do you have a stereo system in your car, that could be drawing out alot of the needed electricity for proper electronics operation ***If this problem is very quick - the needles flicker, go to zero, and then return to normal operation, Check your battery terminals - Make sure they are tight, CLEAN, and free of corrosion. If they are not, carefully disconnect both battery terminals, clean them with a wire brush, and reinstall them. Then, coat them with a battery terminal protective spray that you can get at your local auto parts store. If this problem lasts more than a couple seconds, you most likely have a communication issue between your body control module and the guage cluster. This could be caused by a faulty guage cluster, or a faulty connection between the guage cluster and the BCM.

***make sure the key is out of the ignition***

I just solved this problem 20 minutes ago on my exact same car. Took 10 minutes.

1. check the fuse (for a 2000 grand am GT, it's the 20amp fuse labelled "I" in the passenger side fusebox

2. if the fuse is fine, it's most likely the switch. Remove the interior trim that outlines the sunroof so you can get a peek at the electronics near the switch

3. pry the foam roof down until you can see the switch, reach in and remove the wire housing from the switch. It will be rectangular with three wires in it. Red, black, and white.

4. put the key in the ignition and turn it on so you have power

5. using two small screwdrivers or a small piece of insulated wire, short the connection between white wire's terminal and either the red or black, I don't remember which but nothing bad will happen if you get it wrong.

6. if you got it right, the sunroof will begin to move as long as you keep shorting it (electrically, this is the same as pressing and holding the "close" side of the switch)

7. keep shorting it until it closes completely, leave the housing disconnected from the switch and tuck it back in the ceiling.

Until you get a replacement switch, you won't be able to use your sunroof. If this did not work, you have a motor problem and should see a mechanic.

1.8 engine holds 3.1 quarts, and 2.5 engine hold 3.7 i think

The QG1.8 takes 2.785 qts, and the QR2.5 takes 4.125 qts.

Purchase a PRESTONE flush kit, radiator flush, and new antifreeze. There is directions on package. You will be splicing a 'tee'into heater hose return line with a garden hose adapter,adding the flush to the radiator, and attaching the garden hose to the tee fitting. After running the engine for about 10 minutes with the flush in it, you will attach a garden hose to the tee and push all the crap right out the rad. Works good. Add antifreeze. Done. There's no reason it shouldn't. The bodies are the same for every model from the doors forward. The convertibles are made by shipping the completed hard-top vehicle from Japan to California to ASC (American Specialty Cars) where the top is sawn off and the frame and doors are reinforced by welding on steel plates. This "stiffens" the body to make up for removing the top. Although it adds a bit of weight to the car, it (almost) keeps the body from twisting between the front and back (lateral support). Very few convertibles in the world start out as convertibles. The number of units sold would not justify the costs of designing and setting up separate assembly lines for a large manufacturer. Be sure to keep your rubber seals around windshield and on the top protected with a treatment like Meguir's spray to prolong life. It is VERY expensive and sometimes impossible to replace these after a short time because they don't produce many replacements. I found that my '89 GT was seal was unavailable. They said IF it could be found, it would be about $1,000. Luckily, I discovered you can use Permatex's "Good Stuff" gasket foam to patch and repair the seal. It is almost unnoticable when blended. (Use wet finger to shape). The only difference I have been able to find is that one part number came WITH MOULDING and the other w/out. Strange is that they are priced exactly the same! I am a bit fuzzy on the exact look of the '95 as I haven't seen one in a few years. The only hitch I can think of is if there is an integration to the convertible moulding where the would join after modification. I know that the convertibles were usually sporting different wheel rims than the standard GT. (The early '90's had round openings on their rims for the convertible only). Two possibilties to decide: If the moulding is different: one could come WITH the specialized mould. OR They left the mould OFF so the special moulding could be transferred (re-used)by using the double sided moulding mounting tape at the body shop. I know that the belt moulding on the late eighties models can stretch when removed and be a bi*ch to apply straight again without showing waves. Luckily on those, the belts are shorter in length than the door pieces, so there is less distance for them to "swerve". Even on the late eighties model they show different part numbers, btw, and looking from my convert to my coupe there weren't any interal differences, using a flashlight.

There is a large cap in the engine compartment that looks somewhat like a radiator cap. Let your engine cool and make sure the coolant is NOT under pressure. Turn the cap counterclockwise till it stops, then just like a radiator cap press down on it and turn it 1/4 turn more. Take off the cap and you will find the thermostat right under it. Grab the "handle" with a pliers, give it a turn to break the seal and pull it out. Make sure your fiero is full of radiator fluid before you replace the thermostat. If there is no fluid under the cap when you opened it, your trouble is with a lack of fluid, not a bad thermostat. There is a special fill procedure when refilling a fiero with coolant.

You need to move the overflow radiator jug out of the way, just pull up, then take off the cap of cruise control - if you have one. There are two bolts that need to be removed... the one at the top is a 14MM nut and undo that one. The other one is a 12MM bolt on the bottom and you need a flexible wrench to get at it. The exhaust probe is in the way and you will destroy it if you are not careful Last nut to losen is the tension nut below the belt. Losen this bolt a lot.

Once the two bolts are undone, use a rubber mallot and gently knock the alternator down. It will come out. Take the new alternator and slide it in. You can twist it around the belt and down or perhaps pull the belt on after... but its tight... actually a good idea to buy a new belt.

Then put in the 14MM bolt in, but don't tighten it. Put the 12MM bolt in, remember how it goes, from the exhaust probe to the cruise control. Tighten the 12MM bolt. tighten the 14MM bolt. Tighten the 10 MM tension back to where it was..... and... it should be fine.

Read and article on the internet somewhere that said that 2001 Grand Ams come with a "bug" in the remote keyless entry system and that there really is no known cause or fix other than to reset the computer by turning the key to the on position and leaving it that way for 10 minutes. take the key out and then reinsert and it should start. Was minutes away from having my car towed to the dealership when I found this and it worked. My advice would be to try it before putting a whole bunch of money into it. Security System problem I had the same problem and found out it was the ignition switch causing the security light to light up. I took my car to the dealership and they stated it was the ignition switch. It cost roughly $700 to change out, but I haven't had that problem again. This happened to me one time and it turned out that the car had ran out of gas. However, the fuel gauge was reading over a quarter tank. So first thing make sure you have gas in the car because this is a common problem with a grand am to have a faulty gauge. It will still appear that the engine is getting gas in most cases because it partially is....just not a sufficient amount.

Look at the upper end of the brake pedal under the dash area. This how to change the switch. I just did mine with a help of a friend.
First,remove the plastic panel from underneath the steering column (do not forget to remove two screws holding the hood release latch)and the supporting metal bracket.
Second, remove two screws for a switch mounted on the steering column and 2/3 of the way where the brake paddle touches.
Third, now uoy have a clear way to remove the swich, remove the connector and looses the nut it is a little bit hard because the space is tight but with patience you will get it
Finally, put the new switch on and good luck with putting all the screws back wher they belong. Tools you need a philips, straight screw drives, 10" and 12" socket. a 10,12,13 and 14 MM renches.

Not much but they do make a noise. It's usually grunts, small barks and coughing noises.

put a block of wood on a jack and place it under the oil pan and jack it a little them remove the motor mount bolts. the one by the belt system. then you should be able to take the belt out and place new one on.

located behind the glove box. It is a filter that cleans the cabin air or the fresh air from the outside before it goes through the environment unit or the a/c heating unit. this prevents 2 things, 1 dirt build up on unit it's self and cleans the air from dust thusly keeping the interior cleaner and allergins down. should be replace every time the engine air filter is replaced or serviced.

drain on bottom of radiator, only flush if it's real dirty and brown, otherwise just drain and refill... also in the book ...everyone should have a manual for their vehicle, and the library should have a professional shop manual available for FREE to make copies of...read up and repair like a PRO! I have a 94 Pontiac Grand AM SE and replacing the bulb on gear shift is difficult. The whole panel that the gear shift sits on can be remove. First pull the pin out from the shift knob its located in the front of the knob just above the metal rod it sits on. Then pull out the knob. After that just pry out the panel carefully at the sides, starting from the cigarette lighter up to where the switch is to adjust the mirror. Disconnect the wire from the cigarette lighter, gear shift and the switch that adjust the mirrors. The bulb is on a circuit that is one with the gear shift indicators.
