Heating AC and Engine Cooling

Heating, air conditioning (AC) and engine cooling require a radiator to transfer heat. Heating a cabin requires heat to be transferred from an engine block. Engine cooling blows the heat out of the engine. AC uses refrigerants to cool air.

What makes the engine cooling fan not work at high speed on a 2001 GMC Jimmy?

There is no need for the fan to run while traveling at highway speed. There is plenty of air flowing through the radiator at high speeds to keep the system cool. The only time it will work at highway speeds is when the A/C is on.

How do you bleed a car cooling system?

Same idea as bleeding the break fluid only much easier. You need to find the location of the bleeding screw first. You need a clear hose that would fit the bleeding screw and a container to keep some of the fluid that will drain out during the process. You must have the engine running and in normal operating temp. Let the coolant drain until there are no bubbles coming out from the hose. Retighten the bleeding screw and add more coolant on the reservoir at the full level and you're done.

What makes that new car smell?

The "New Car" smell is related to what is known as an "out gassing" of many of the materials used to make the car.

For example, the vinyl in the dash board gives off gasses during it's first few months after manufacture. The same can be said of the carpet, the glues used to install it, and the seats.

Cloth or vinyl seats give off their own odors, while leather gives off odors, due to the treatments performed to make it last longer.

There actually is an air freshener that car manufacturers use to cover up the out gassing of the interior materials. That is what you actually smell.

Where is the engine block heater cord on the 2007 Pontiac g5?

Answer

Your car might not have a heater as Aaron had mentioned although your odds are really good that it does. I own a G5 as well and the block heater cord is under the hood, on the very far left as you look at the engine. It should have a cap on the end and a sticker that says "operates at 0 degrees F or -18 degrees C. The cord is zap-strapped to the engine along its entire route except for the last six inches. Pull these last six inches of cord out of hood and allow to dangle beside the headlight. Put back in spring.

What if your 98 Chevy Cavalier is smoking help?

The color of the smoke determines what the problem is more likely to be. Bluish smoke means the engine is burning oil. Probable causes are worn valve guides or worn piston rings. White smoke is most likely to be steam caused by coolant in the exhaust system. A blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head would be likely. Black smoke indicates te engine is burning rich. Probable cuases are fouled spark plugs, faulty throttle position sensor, leaking injector(s).

2002 Ford Explorer EB Fan in the car won't stop running?

If it is the engine fan something is poss. wrong with your A/C &/or the control. When the the A/C is on the fan will blow to cool the engine. Put your temp. to the hottest setting & see if fan stops. Shut off A/C. If it is the inside blower fan check the manual to test the dash control unit. I have a 1996 Eddie Bauer 5.0 V8 AWD & I test it by pressing & holding the OFF & FLOOR buttons while pressing & releasing the AUTO button. You should hear clicking sounds. If the unit is bad a fault code will display. If no fault it will test out all the bulbs in the dash unit. To exit test I press the BLUE COOL temp. button. Hope this helps or puts you in the right direction.

How do you add Freon into the car AC?

Answer r-12 r-134 freon a/cIt is kind of easy but is best with 2 people. First buy the box of r-134 a/c recharge kit , it has 2 cans of freon, the valve nozzle , hose, and the converter attatchment for the r-12 systems.I have found this for $35.00 at the MART that starts with a "K" (hope this was not considered copyrighted text), plus buy one can of oil charge and one can of leak seal. (not that the box kit is only a one time only purchase and can be used on mostly all vehicles). Than (always wear goggles and gloves) remove the (2) valves stems on your vehicles a/c lines. Have another person have the ide at around 2000 rpm (and with the a/c on), (if your compressor is not REMAINING on than hook up a direct wire from battery to compressor (it might be a pos. and/or a neg.,lots of types of vehicles) than with an ink pen press in the tips of the valves until it is all (ALL) empty, and the valve that has the old freon spraying out is the high pressure valve(freon will be hot). Then to fill, (freon only goes into the LOW pressure valve. First use one can of freon (upside down, and some will spray out of can IT WILL BE FREEZER BURN COLD, than one can of oil charge, than one can of leak seal. if the a/c is a little warm than add the other can of freon, but if the a/c is cool, than that is probably enough,(too much will pop a hose line). Note that this is an at home procedure (not from a professonal) so do not expect the a/c to be cold like factory car lot cold. If you think you may have a leak but need to find it, only try the first can of freon to (hopefully) find the leak, or of course you will lose all of what you put in when you repair the leak. Also it is a good idea to buy the freon pressure gauge at the same store ($7.00), it is good so you do not over fill, it is easy to overfill by accident and possiby crack the compressor. Good luck and have a cooooooool summer.

Allot of auto parts stores will sell a kit with only one gauge. You need two gauges to properly add Freon to your car. It is also a good idea to evacuate the moisture from your compressor. This is esp. true if your AC was working and slowly got warmer and then blew only hot air out of your vents. All car AC systems are 'designed' to loose Freon due to the flexibility of the seals in the compressor. If you don't have an evacuation pump, you buy a a Moisture Flush can/kit that costs approx 5.00 at an auto. This will ensure you compressor. If you car does not have a tachometer (there are quite a few budget models that don't it east to guess what 2000 RPM is. Put your foot on the gas approx. 2 steps and your engine will be hitting in the area of 2000. The important part is to rev your engine during the process.

There are some great videos from Scotty Kilmer on youtube on recharging your cars AC system. Mechanics will have you believe they are the only ones qualifies to do it, but with proper planning, reading all directions, watching youtube videos you will save hundreds and have a cool summer.

How will you know how much freon your car needs?

first read up on it then read the gauge... theres a cool new kit called "A/C recharging for dummies" at the parts store.. also Everyone should have a manual for their vehicle, and the library should have a professional shop manual available, for FREE, in the reference section(make copies of the correct sections) read up and fix it like a PRO! :) good luck-Dave
