Actually changing the DPFE sensor is remarkably easy, the hard part is getting to it in the first place. I have the exact same year Mountaineer, but mine is a 5 liter V-8 and I am not sure if you have the same engine. To locate the DPFE sensor look towards the firewall of the vehicle directly above the aluminum portion that says 5.0 liter V-8. It is bolted to that same aluminum portion but it is located on the firewall side. Now here is the hard part. In that same area you have a couple of wiring harnesses and the dipstick for the transmission, so you virtually have no room to play with. The driver's side bolt is not too big of a deal, the passenger side is a totally different story. Once I realized that, what I decided to do is to leave the old one attached and mounted the new one to the firewall. I didn't actually bolt it to the firewall, but found a way to secure it by using some liquid foam. Then all I did was reroute the electrical plug-in and the two hoses that were attached to the old DPFE sensor. Once I was sure the foam had time to set I started her up and it was smooth sailing. One side note, I did unhook the battery to make sure the CEL would reset. I took a mini roadtrip of about a 100 miles today and I am happy to say the new DPFE sensor took care of my problem. I have noticed a big difference in the sound of the vehicle with the new sensor also. It sounds a whole lot better now.

I found mine in the door post in between the 3rd seat and the back seat door post. It is a small 4 x 4 box with 5 large numbers (your door combo) on it.

The blower resistor is typically the problem with manual HVAC when the blower switch only operates at the high setting (4). This is because the three (slower) settings go through this resistor pack to slow down the blower motor. First find the blower motor. It is on the passenger side of the engine compartment attached to the firewall and you can easily confirm it by simply turning on the blower to full and listening when the engine is not running. If you are facing the blower motor pretend it is a clock face. Look down at the 5 o'clock position below the blower motor and you will see a 3x1" resistor module that is attached with two 8mm screws. The resistors themselves are not visible because they are on the inside where they can be cooled by the blower air. There is an electrical plug attached to it. The screws are not very easy to reach, so you might want to have a universal coupling for your wrachet to give you an angle. So just unclip the electrical plug, unscrew the two screws, remove/replace with the new blower resistor and reconnect the electrical plug. If that doesn't fix the problem, you probably have to check for connectivity at the electrical plug attached to the blower resistor you just installed.

The best way to troubleshoot your GEM module on your Mercury is with a diagnostic tester. The diagnostic tester will tell you if the module is working properly.

A person should know the general location of the electronic parts of their car. The Computer module in this car is located in the drivers side rear compartment close to the jack.Ê

You can see your starter from the passenger side wheel well. It is gold, with a black solenoid. It is held on by two 1/2 inch or 13mm bolts. you also have a starter solenoid realy between your battery and under hood fuse box. Good luck

I own the same model. Its hard to find but its deep inside and underneath the control panel on the passenger side. You literally have to stick you head close to the brake petal and look up. I have a stick shift, so its to the left of the shifting gear. Hope this helps.

I had the same type noise in my 2002 Mountaineer. I pulled the panel of on the rear drivers side and found the device that opens and closes the heat or air vent was not getting to the position it needed to be. constant recycle. Since I live in Florida I disabled the device and positioned the vent to air only. No noise and its cool now.

Unless someone does something to intentionally cause you to hit them as in an insurance scam, whoever does the hitting from the back is responsible. If the van in front managed to avoid the car, you should have had time to do the same. May have been a safe speed, but not enough distance between you and the van.

I have purchased a Chilton's manual, and it says that the motor has to be pulled in order for the oil pan gasket to be replaced. I am actually going to pick up an oil pan gasket for my 1997 Mountaineer 5.0l tomorrow. My husband will be doing most of the work, but the Chilton's manual says that the engine has to be completely removed from the vehicle. I have talked to a few other people who say you can just take off motor mounts and lift motor up about 4 inches, but I don't see how a person is going to be able to work around all the other parts. It would be a lot easier and less hassle really to just pull the motor to replace the oil pan gasket.

no more than 125.00 for labor or buy the book it's not that bad. Try to avoid the dealer mom & pop shop with a good rep do better work. and they don't treat you like a number. the fuel pump is about 160.00 new after market.anything under 300-250 is fair. but shop around. Good luck

The computer NORMALLY puts the engine in a "limp home" mode allowing you to get to a safe place to have it checked. By driving it further than necessary you may be doing more damage to the engine than what was originally incurred. But realize a check engine light could come on with a trouble code for a fuel delivery problem and your fuel pump could just quit. The computer just logged the fault, but did not shut the engine down, the fuel pump failure did. So some people have thought the computer has the power to shut you down but a sfaety factor was built into the computers allowing you the ooportunity to get the car home and have it checked. Just don't push your luck....so that at the casino.

Open hood........two vertical metal fastener strips pull upward to release entire lamp assembly so you can change bulb. Change, and replace lamp assembly by inserting the two metal fasteners back.

The only way I know is to remove or raise the console up to allow the star wrench room.

According to my manual it is in the power distribution box located in the engine compartment and it is #14 fuse with number 10A. Hope this helps
