Seems kinda crazy but GM started adding that warning light to its cars and trucks in the early 90's. This light comes on when you first start the car (along with many of the other warning lights) so that you can verify that the light bulbs in all those warning lights are working and not burned out. BUT, if the CHECK GAUGES warning light comes on while driving, it means one or more of the engine monitoring gauges is reading out of a normal range. Example: The temperature gauge needle usually reads at or about halfway up the gauge when the car is at proper orperating temperature. Should the engine begin to overheat and the gauge reads into the upper portion of the gauge (the red area) then the CHECK GAUGES light will illuminate along with a high pitched buzzing sound. For many years most American cars had all warning lamps and no gauges save for the fuel level and speedo. Some cars had an option from the factory of gauges to monitor engine temperature and alternator output/battery voltage and oil pressure, but few were ever equipped with these gauges.... Then in the mid 80's or so many cars came standard with AT LEAST an engine temperature gauge....But drivers still failed to keep a watch on the gauges and GM elected to add the CHECK GAUGES light.....Kinda like warning lights DELUIXE!!!!! Now you have gauges, warning lights, and audible waring to let you know, you are not going to go too much further in this vehicle without making some sort of repairs...

You can get a check engine light reader from Kragen -- they will usually let you borrow it at the store if you are just going out into the parking lot -- it will tell you what went wrong so you can then repair it

Ti find out whitch spark plug is # 1,look at your engine.The head that's the furthest to the front of the engine is the one with the # 1 plug.It would be the first plug at the front of your motor on that side.

drive train is not able to be used as are the wiring harness and ecm, most of the other parts are interchangable. These include brakes suspension and body parts... i.e. seats and interior...loosenut...

Push button AM/Fm Delco. Might have a cassette player.

Should be at the lower rear end of the engine Remove the - battery cable
Raise and support vehicle
Remove wires from starter solenoid at top of starter
Remove starter mounting bolts
Remove starter

O.K. i have an 86 trans am and just recently replaced the heater core myself. First thing you do is drain all the coolant from the engine. disconnect battery. the heater core is located on the passenger side inside the lower dashboard. You will have to unscrew the lower dashboard and either let it hang down or pop out the convenience light to make more room to move it out of the way, i would pop out the light. Once you have it down there will be a rectangular black box like covering, you will need to unscrew this, note that it would be best to use a long socket extension as there are screws at the topback, use a flashlight first to check out where all the screws are, there are about 5 or 6 if i recall. Once you have the screws off pull the recantangular shaped box towards you and down. Might have to play with it to get it out. Once off, there is another black like box with a metal plate on it. Unscrew the metal plate and unscrew the black like box. Again there are screws that are hard to see so use a flashlight first to check out where all the screws are whether at the back top or sides. I believe again there are 5 or 6. Once you have the screws out pull the box from the left side towards you to release the clip that is attached to the heater core, you cant see the clip but the box covering is attached to the heater core so you will have to play with the box covering to get it to come off, you will be able to see the exposed heater core once the box is off. Next, disconnect the hoses in the engine bay against the firewall, the two inlet outlet hoses. You can't miss them, they are the only ones going into the firewall on the passenger side. If they are hard to pull off they maybe melted on or the pressure is keeping them on. You will have to cut them off and get 2 new heater hoses. Don't bother trying to pull them off if they are stuck, i tried, waste of time and frustration. Use a knife to slit the hoses at the firewall, this will release the pressure. Once you have the hoses off the heater core tubes at the firewall, go back inside the car and pull on the heater core towards you to pull it out. Put in the new heater core, if the tubes on the new heater core dont go through the firewall holes because they are to far apart, bend them in slightly, you will hear some metal creaking but this is the only way, I did this and have had no problems. Attach your old or new heater hoses again in the engine bay to the new heater core tubes that come through the firewall and clamp them and clamp them at the engine block as well. Put new coolant in the car. reattach battery. Start car to get new coolant circulated and look at the heater core to make sure there are no leaks as well as the hoses. let the engine warm up for 5 to 10 minutes then turn off engine. Go back into the car and start to put the black box with clip back into place. Note that this part is tricky as i could get the black box clip onto the heater core but the long bar clip at the end of the black box would not let me screw the box into place so i unscrewed it from the black box and just had the one clip from the box on the heater core, to get it to screw into place. Once you have this box in place re attach the metal plate and then put the other retangular box back in place with screws and then reattach your dashboard. Check the coolant level again and add more coolant if necessary. Will need to start car again. , can be frustrating but there are also manuals out there to help.

ok,, i got the houseing off that houses the heater core i took the screws out that hold the clip for the heater core,, but when i go to pull it out it seem slike its bending the tubes, now when i put my new one in will it be ok or will it bend the tubes and wreck them or just be careful and gentle with it or does the days have to come off?? i got the top dash piece off the basket for the stereo deck,, and the housing underneath,, now i am concerend whether this method will work without damaging anything.

it should be right above your coil Its connected into the coil but mine was actually mounted on the passenger side firewall. its the only wire with a small harness.

A Firebird is a Generic name for a GM made Pontiac manufactured car made from 1967-now and possibly will go on for another century... The next firebird/trans am comes out probably in 2011 or 2012... lets hope so.

Could be a number of things. Start by performing any maintenance items that are due and listed in you owner's manual. If you have not done so, replace all vacuum hoses, including the brake booster hose. Check the booster for a cracked or leaking diaphragm. Replace the hoses one at a time to avoid getting confused. If it idles rough but runs good under acceleration, then a vacuum leak is probable.

Well you mean tail lights i think and it has to either they are burnt out or a brake edal sensor is the problem and is stuck

With some modifications anything could happen but is better if you get the dash wiring for the 79 firebird.

Firebirds were not built in Canada until 1993. The 1979's were built in Norwalk, Ohio and Vanise, Califoria.

maybe the US ones were , but mine was definatly built in Canada - the documentation says so.

somethings not hooked up right, why did you change the ignition switch...were there any burnt wires? Which fuse? Which circuit? When you disconnect the components controlled byt the fuse is the gas gauge normal? Wiring diagrams and procedures are in a shop manual available at your local library...good luck...

The wire goes to the coil, which is bolted to the drivers side head in the front of the motor.

I have a Pontiac Grand Prix 1977. I assume the fuse box location is at the same. Remove the metal panel (by unscrewing coupe of nuts) from underneath the console-steering wheel area where another air vent is located, and you will find the fuse box near by park-brake release.

The horn(s) on a 1991 Pontiac Firebird are inside the left front (driver side) fender, behind the headlight, in front of the wheel well next to the vacuum canister. There are two horn assemblies, one has the "A" tone, and the other has the "F" tone. One bolt holds each horn assembly to the inside of the fenders super-structure, and there is one (common) green wire that connects to each horn.

GM V8 starters before the mid 90s (or so) are interchangeable except for the nose piece. Since Pontiac mounts starters on the drivers side and Chevy mounts them on the passenger side, there are different noses. There were also normal and heavy duty starters. The normal duty have a spacer in the connection between the starter and solenoid. The HD ones do not.

Does it crank? do you have spark? fuel?

A plain Jane Pontiac Firebird sold for $5,550 new in 1979.
