Where is the thermostat located on a 1990 VW cabriolet?
I'm actually in the middle of replacing mine. From what the mechanic told me, I had thought it would be there when I removed the bottom, large radiator hose from the engine beneath the front of the car. It's not right there - I'm not very car savvy - though if you ALSO remove the black metal part connecting between that hose and the engine, I'm told it IS there.
Hope that helps. I'm taking mine in - I can work on computers all day long, but I'm a lousy grease monkey. hehe.
Answer:The thermostat on all Cabriolets is located inside the thermostat housing, which is attached to the water pump:. The lower radiator hose attaches to the thermostat housing.
Why would the turn signals work on Subaru Impreza but not the hazards when the fuses are good?
Sounds like a relay, which should be near or in the fuse box.
Where is the timings mark to adjust ign and crankshaft for a 89 VW cabriolet?
if it is the 1.8L engine as in a 1990 Cabriolet the timing mark is located on the flywheel which is viewed through a hole on top of the transmission. The hole will have a circular plug that can easily be unscrewed and is about 2" in diameter. Most have a smaller hole in the center of the plug that is for factory use. The timing mark on the flywheel is damond shapped (a strechted triangle). The aligning marker (fixed) is attached to the bell housing and looks like an arrow pointing downward. There is no scale. Once you follow the 'setting the timing instructions' for your year car, all you have to do is turn the distributor until the diamond mark of the flywheel alligns with the fixed arrow and your done.
What does the check engine light mean on a 1998 VW Cabrio?
It means the same as on any other car on the planet. Nothing wrong with your engine (probably) the light is all about your exhaust emissions system. Amazingly enough, the most common reason for that light coming on is that you did not tighten your gas cap enough clicks when you last filled up. Sometimes when you next fill up and tighten the cap properly it will clear the light because the tank is pressurized again. SOmetimes the light needs to be reset. AutoZone will "read" you computer and confirm what the light means if you still have trouble with it. Unless your car is driven at 20mph everywhere, your catalytic convertor is probably ok Phil
Why are catalytic converters fitted within the exhaust systems of cars that use petrol as fuel?
They capture harmful emissions that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.
Where is the ecm located on a 1991 vw cabriolet?

What do you attach negative lead to during jump start?

Most likely you have a leaking fuel accumulator. The accumulator stores fuel pressure for the CIS (fuel injection) and is a critical part for proper running. Park the car on concrete, rev the car several times and hold at about 3000RPM for a few seconds. Shut the car off. Look under the car on the passenger side approximately under where the passenger seat is located. You will see what looks like an old ignition coil (army drab green color) with two metal lines attached to it that is the fuel accumulator. Check under the car and around the accumulator for any gasoline. If you find gasoline under or on the accumulator, the accumulator must be replaced for proper running of the car. Be sure to also check all vacuum lines on the engine especially the rubber "T" which has several larger lines coming from it going to the engine and system. The T tends to break down and leak air which messes up the injection system. When the T breaks down, it looks fine but has become gooey so you will need to actually touch it and move it to make sure it has not deteriorated to the point of leaking. With the engine running (don't put your hands in any moving parts!) move and bend all the vacuum hoses and if the engine stalls or increases speed, that hose must also be replaced as it is leaking air or is not making a good seal at the fittings.

How do you fix dashboard lights on a Volkswagen Cabriolet?
It requires the removal of the dashboard (ie the speedo and rev counter section) On the back you will see the circuit board which is flexable. Look for the green LED's at the top and resolder some new ones in their place. This is also a chance for you to change the apearance of the dash lights as you can put any colour LED in their place. You can make the dash look like the Mk4's blue dash lights Good luck Lemm Further answer: There are six (6) screws on the plastic face plate for the dash, remove all. There are two (2) screws holding the dash in place, remove. Reach around in back of the dash panel (tight fit) and squeeze the speedo cable to remove, pull off. Then tilt the dash down so you can see the back of the dash panel. There are two (2) lights on top, twist to remove and one (1) light at the center, back. Go to VW and get new lights, replace. BUT, carefully put the new ones in and turn the lights on, make sure they work. You will NOT have to solder them, at least not on my 1992 Cab. I had to fiddle around with them a bit to get them to go on. This is a big pain-in-the-you-know-what and I am surprised the Germans made replacing these lights so hard. Good luck. Mike

How do you change out an exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold to the catalytic converter?
You need to unclamp the "C" spring clamps from the manifold. This requires a special tool to expand the clamp. The clamp and gasket kit is around $100.
AnswerNo "special" tool is needed; simply visit your local Ace hardware or auto parts store and buy two exhaust clamps: Simple, all you really need to do is design a wedge that will spread the clamp wide enough to fit over and in place, then you bang the wedge out. OR First, use a jack to hold the exhaust pipe in place, put the top part of the C clamp on first then pull down with a chain or rope. Drivers side clamp on first cause its easy to get the first clamp on. As for the passenger side clamp, u gonna need some MUSCLE.
Do the same as the first, but your gonna need something stiffter than a chain, like a flat bar with a point on it that'll fit through the hole.

Why won't my 1992 BMW 325i brake lights not work?
I have a 1994 325i... Every once in a while I get and indicator that says brake light failure. I notice this mostly when it's wet outside, and if I turn the car off and back on again, it resets itself. After replacing the tail lights 2 times (only driver's side and very expensive) I found it to be the connector contacts. The tail lights have a male/female connector to the circuit board, down in the female part of the connector you will see circular "tube" connectors that are attached to the wires going into the female connector, that the male connector should be touching when it is inserted. Some of these may have come loose or gotten dirty. I've replaced several of these (not easy to find so take one with you to the electrical store), Cleaned them well with contact cleaner, and haven't has a problem since. NOTE: When replacing them do ONE at A TIME so you can strip the wire and put the connector on clean...and put it back where you got it from... if you take them all out, it's a pain figuring out which wire needs to go in which hole!
