Car Stalling Problems

When your car’s engine stops when it’s in idle or is accelerating, then your car has stalled. Almost all stalling problems stem from poor fuel-gas mixture, out-of-tune fuel injection or fuel contaminants.

Where is the idle air control valve located on a 1999 Lincoln Continental?

How to Test brake booster?

Apply vacuum test to the booster. If it does not hold vacuum it is defective. You can borrow a vacuum gage at most auto parts stores.

You could go lazy man's style and just take the vacuum line off of booster. If the brakes are as hard as concrete, then put it back on and the pedal is smooth, you got yourself a decent working unit.

95 4runner 3.0 stalls and has a very low idle after a hot restart?

At this point I would only suspect the idle adjustment being set to low. But check the air filter and ensure its clean. If not replace it. Still stalls then adjust the idle up. The big screw on the throttle body does this. Get the car warmed up and then start backing out the screw to increase the idle. It shouldn't make much difference to its cold speed.

If this doesn't work reply to this response with the changes and lets see where I can point you.

88 Chev15004.3-sometimes stalls out in idle at stops turns and reverse can sometimes save by accelerating?

This could be something simple as a vaccum leak, dirt air filter or more complicated as replacing the Idle Air Control Valve. Check your AIR FILTER, replace if dirty or worn out or old. Check your spark plugs, replace if old worn or damaged. Sparks may last up to 5 years or 6 months depending on your engine conditions. Oily plugs are a bad sign. Check your spark wires. If very old replace them. Inspect the vacumm hoses with soap water or shaving cream for bubles, hissss noise or like. If no leaks then think you may need to check the IAC ( Idle Air control valve ) for your car. This in conjuction with computer board are responsible for maintaining a stady idle rpm of your motor and to prevent stalling. Here ! pfarias@alplighting.com

Why does a car take so long to warm up?

Car heating systems usually rely on the excess heat generated by the engine to heat the passenger compartment.

There's a thing that looks just like a small radiator that sits in a fan shroud underneath the dash. When the engine has gotten warm, the coolant liquid that circulates through the engine and this little radiator also gets warm.

And by having a fan blow air through the radiator, you get warm air that can be directed out through the vents in the dash into the passenger compartment of the car.

There's a lot of metal in the engine that needs to heat up before the coolant is warm enough to heat the radiator enough for it to heat the air that you can send out into the cab.

Why would a car stall when you step on the gas?

It's probably not getting enough fuel. Check the fuel filter but more likely the fuel pump.

In addition to lack of fuel it could be a monster vacuum leak. Does this condition improve as the engine gets to normal operating condition? What is the warning light transit connect orange symbol left side?

It is hard to say what the orange warning light transit symbol on the left side is. It would depend on the year, make, and model of the vehicle. Most vehicles have a users manual that have a listing of the symbols to tell the user what each warning light is for.

Blazer stalls while driving and reaches normal temp?

If it is a newer model (no distributor) then it sounds like the Ignition Control pack is bad. If it is older (with a distributor) then replace the Ignition coil inside the distributor cap.

What could cause a 2001 Ford Focus to start but idles rough changed coil pack codes say number 1 and 4 cylinder misfires HELP?

First thing, check your vacuum hoses. Second, unhook your battery for about an hour, then hook it back up. The computer may need to reset itself. After that, you're on your own.

  • The most common vacuum hose issue with a focus is the PCV hose wher it goes to the back of the intake manifold. You should check that, but ususlly if you have a vacuum hose problem, it won't show up as a P0301 and a p0304 fail code, like you have. It will ususlly be a p0171 which is a lean code.

Since your fail codes are 301 and 304, you should actually check to see if you have ignition fire to the #1 and #4 cylinders. Evidentally you already checked that and didn't have fire, otherwise, I wouldn't think you would have replaced the coil pack, without doing that simple test. But in case you didn't, then you need to. If you have no fire to those two cyliders, and you are sure your plug wires are good, then likely there is something wrong in the PIP signal to the coil pack from the PCM. On the coil pack, there is a connector into the side with three wires. One is a shared PIP(pulsed ground signal) to the towers for cyls #1 and #4, one is a PIP to #2 and #3, and the third wire is a common power input. PIP is a pulsed ground from the PCM. The PCM pulses the ground "on" everytime it wants to fire either the #1/#4 cylinders, or the #2/#3 cylinders. So the #1 and the #4 plugs both fire at the same time, and so do the #2 and #3 plugs. The cylinder that isn't on it's compression stroke just receives a harmless "waste" spark.

If you DO have spark to these plugs, then you could have bad plugs. But if you DO NOT have bad plugs, then your problem IS NOT ignition. If your problem is not ignition, then you could have fuel injector issues or engine compression issues.

One thing is certain. When you find and fix the problem, you will know it. The engine will straighten up and run fine. No "resetting" of the PCM is necessary, other than to turn off the check engine light. "Reseting" the PCM does not fix problems. That is a common misconception.

You have what is referred to as a "misfire" evidentally on the numbers 1 and 4 cylinders. Four things cause a misfire: ignition failure(spark), fuel failure(lack of fuel), engine compression failure to those cylinders, or coolant getting into those two cyliders which is causing the fuel to not combust.

RECAP: Start with spark which is coil, plugs, or plug wires. If you don't have spark, find out why. Is it plugs, lug wires, or do you have no PIP signal on that circuit to those two coil towers.

Second, if spark is not your problem, then check engine compression. Get an engine compression guage and test all four cyliders. All will be around 150 PSI if they are good. Any cylinders that are under 100 PSI are a problem.

Third, make sure all four fuel injectors are firing.

Do those three thiings, and I'll bet somewhere along the line, you will find your problem.

What are the symptoms of a failing oil pump?

You dont want to feel OR hear the symtoms. If you think you have a bad pump unscrew the oil sender and screw in a pressure gauge.

How do you stop driving in reverse?

Come to a full stop, put on the handbrake, change the gear to first (or drive) and begin driving forwards as normal. Do not try to put the car into a forward gear while you are still travelling backwards.

Why do catalytic converters do not work effctively until the engine has warmed up?

A catalytic converter changes unburned hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water vapor. It's a simple chemical process, and like most chemical processes, it will either generate or absorb heat so in this case, since the catalytic converter requires heat to change the state of the hydrocarbons, it either has to be heated or it will operate quite effectively using the exhaust heat.

Note, if the engine is operating efficiently there should be very little for the catalytic converter to do.

What would cause loss of power when accelerating?

Loss of power when accelerating can be caused by a number of things. A leak in the fuel line or even a bad alternator can cause this.

What do you do if your Jeep Grand Cherokee will not start?

First check instrument panel to see if the SECURITY light is lit. If so, assume that something has triggered the anti-theft automatic motor cut-off. The easiest override is to use your key in the driver door and turn it RIGHT twice, and left once. Another contributor suggested the same procedure with the passenger door. If neither works, we tried a back-up plan and used two keys just in case...

First, we attached battery cables to insure power to the engine.. then attempted to start engine. Second person tried the key procedure on the driver door. It worked like a charm!

It's an ongoing problem with our 95 Jeep Orvis ed. ever since a professional battery outlet installed our new remote battery BACKWARDS and fried our electrical system. Always be very careful with those remotes. As for the non-start, if it's not the security cut-off, there are tons of other regular items to check, which I'll leave to others. Cheers!
