Car Starting Problems

Some of the common car starting problems stem from a discharged battery, a bad fuel pump (or no fuel), a weakened starter motor, or a broken electrical connection. Checking each part will help troubleshoot why the car won’t start.

Where is the starter on a 99 s-10 pickup?

The starter on a 99 S10 is on top of the transmission. It is at the back of the engine and can be removed from under the hood.

Why after on 2-3 days of installing a new battery the car lights will dim and wont start?

A battery is only an electrical STORAGE device; when functioning properly it stores electrical energy.

On the other hand, the ALTERNATOR produces the electrical energy to operate all of the electric components in the vehicle AND sends additional electrical energy to the battery for storage so that the starter can function NEXT time you want to start the engine.

If the alternator is not functioning properly the battery will eventually discharge. That doesn't mean anything is wrong with the battery, it just hasn't been given anything to store. Have a reputable auto parts retailer test your charging system for you.

At this point you should be suspicious of the alternator.

With the key in the 'accessories' position it has power. When the key is moved to the start position the car loses power completely. Any suggestions?

When the key is in the "start" position all accesssories are designed to be "locked out" to concentrate all the available power to the starting circuit. How about the "on" position - do accessories have power at that position? - if not could be a bad ignition switch

If a 93 Grand Prix LE turns over but will not start could it just be a weak battery or could it be a fuel system problem?

test your fuel system turn your key to the on position under the hood by the throttle body is fuel line and a test point remove the cap and press the vaulve down if the fuel preesure is good it will shoot up in the air to test the spark pull a spark plug wire from the plug and put a old spark plug in the wire hold the wire by the block and have someone turn the engine over and look for spark if there is no spark check your coil pack if there is no fuel pressure check the fuel filter and fuel pump. Also, I would check your ECM batt fuse in the engine compartment. I replaced my fuel pump only to find out that instead of spending $80 on this part, I could have instead looked for a short somewhere in the wires and replaced the $.50 fuse.

I have spark and fuel so why won't my 305 start?

the pressure in the engine will stop it from starting (oh 305's are shite)

What does it mean if your won't turn over?

It means: All sounds are normal in the starting if the car ( i.e.the click, the winding up sound), but the car never actually starts or keeps running on its own.

How do you remove the rear spark plugs on a 2001 Kia Optima?

The intake plenium will need to be removed to gain access to the rear three sparkplugs. This is a job that requires some automotive repair skills, about on-par with changing a starter. There is a bent steel gasket that goes between the intake manifold and the plenium, it must be replaced. You can find it at the kia dealership, or Hyundai's parts department has them also, as the Sonata 2.5 V6 uses this part also. Be sure to use premium platinum sparkplugs! Standard plugs will wear out quickly and require this process to be repeated. The sparkplug wires should be replaced when changing the plugs. They cannot be changed without pulling the plenium either. I paid $23. for the gasket, $68. for the plugs and $60. for the wires in March of 08. It took just under two hours from when I popped the hood to when I washed my hands, working at a very leisurly pace. Good luck! SJMCDO

What would cause a clicking sound while starting a 89 Jeep Wrangler. When you turn the key it clicks but doesn't turn over motor. I replaced the Starter and selonoid but the same thing still happens.?

You mean a ticking sound while TRYING to start a jeep? If the jeep doesnt start and is making this noise then either it doesnt have enough amps to start or the starter is bad. You can have the battery tested for free at autozone. It could also be that your alterntor isn't charging the battery also.

Your car starts all of the time but makes a clicking sound for a second after when cold Why?

It could be hydraulic lifters that have collapsed overnight and need a little oil pressure to get them working properly again. If that's all it is, don't worry.

When was Start Back at Start created?

Start Back at Start was created on 2003-06-10.

What might be the cause of overnight battery drain in a 1993 GM diesel pickup?

-aftermarket electrical equipment such as plow, cell phone, alarm

-door or glovebox not closed

-bad alternator diode (may be intermittent)

-corrosion at starter B terminal

-something else

Why does 03 Beetle -2.0 gas- not start on cold mornings below 32- Just a small click when you turn the key- Always starts when warmer or if able to park in garage overnight?

Ur battery cable may need to be cleaned coz battery acid corrodes on cables & its not getting a good connection. If theres no corrosion on cables then the cables may b loose. If its still having hard time cranking then it may need a new battery...possibly a stronger battery..

If a 1983 Chevy Caprice will turn over but not start in snowy conditions what is the problem?

youre problem may be water inside your fuel lines or tank, put some gas line antifreeze in your gas tank and that should help you if that's youre problem, its very common in wintertime

get a bigger battery something like 800 cold cranking amps

I had similar problem in cold weather. Parts contract when cold which may lead to failed electrical connections. My problem solved when replaced distributor cap/rotor and made sure bolts front and back were secured down

What is the engine life expectancy on Plymouth Breeze?

My '98 Purple People Eater Plymouth Breeze currently has 171,000 miles and has been very reliable since purchasing as a used government vehicle in 2001. It has needed
  • Head Gasket Replaced by Government when purchased.
  • Replaced the Timing Belt Twice for Preventive Maintenance (old ones still looked good)
  • Replaced Original Battery at Ten Years Old, amazing! I've never had a battery last that long.
  • Tires Replaced.
  • Brakes Replaced twice.
  • Belts and Hoses Replaced.
  • Regular Oil and Filter changes.
  • Fluid levels checked with Gas Fill-ups.
  • More or less follow Maintenance suggested in Owner's Manual.
  • Flushed and Filled Coolant; Changed Transmission Fluid and Filter.
  • Changed Spark Plugs once or twice (old ones still looked pretty good).

Most of this is routine Maintenance with parts one would normally expect to wear out. Some, such as the Timing Belts may not have needed replacing, but I didn't want to wait for them to Break. Great Car, the most reliable vehicle I've ever had, I love it! I hope to get well over 200,000 miles with it!

Answer

My girlfriend's Breeze had a head gasket replaced at around 44K miles, and another one at 75K. The car is at around 80K now and needs a new transmission. Sad thing is she drives it like an old woman. Throughout the life of the car we've had to replace numerous electrical sensors and components, including the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) a few times.

If you're looking for a reliable car, a Breeze/Stratus/Cirrus/Neon/Sebring are about as far as you'll get from it. We're currently selling the car to buy her a Civic as a replacement.
