Car Starting Problems

Some of the common car starting problems stem from a discharged battery, a bad fuel pump (or no fuel), a weakened starter motor, or a broken electrical connection. Checking each part will help troubleshoot why the car won’t start.

How do you reset a theft-deterrent system?

Ok, I have an active dealer code figured out. You're going to need to take a pen and paper with you out to the car.

1) Go out to your car, and put the key to the 'on' position (not run). When the radio turns on, press and hold #2 and #3. After about ten seconds, three numbers will appear on the screen. Take your time and write these down.

2) After you have the first three numbers, press and release the AM/FM button. Three more numbers will appear on the screen. Write these down.

3) With your new-found 6-digit code, go inside and call 1-800-537-5140. It's just an electronic answering machine. Once the guy finishes talking, press 202108, followed by the *Asterisk* button (not pound).

4) He'll then tell you to enter in your 4- or 6-digit code, followed by the star/asterisk again. So, type in the numbers you got out of your radio, and hit star/asterisk.

5) He'll then tell you your 4-digit unlock code. Write it down.

Why does my starter makes a ticking noise?

Most likely the ticking you are hearing is that from your solonoid. This is generally related with insufficient power from the battery.

How do you reset the Pass lock System on a 2002 Monte Carlo SS and could this cause the car to not start?

You cannot reset it... The computer checks for the current resistance every time you start the car... in other words... it resets itself everytime you turn the key on. If it still won't start the next time, its because it still isn't reading the correct resistance. The only difference between the Passlock system and the older PassKey system is that the resistor is built into the ignition switch instead of the key. This way, any key that will turn the ignition will start the car (because turning to the on position lines up the resistor in the switch) but the car still cannot be hotwired. If one of the wires sending the resistance reading to the computer is pinched, severed or disconnected... or if the resistor in the ignition switch is worn, the computer cannot read the correct resistance and disable the starter and fuel injectors for 3-5 minutes. The resistor may just be dirty... buy "brake and electric motor cleaner" from NAPA and spray it in the keyhole. If this doesn't work check the two small wires going to the switch in the steering column or you may need a new ignition switch. If the ignition switch is replaced, the cars computer will have to be set to the new resistance. Look in your owner's manual. I remember something about the radio and having some computer features that make you have a security code to get your car to start up again. I had that problem and GM says to place in park, shut off the ignition and get out of car, locking it as to depart then unlock and get in, insert key, turn to ACC and turn the lights on and off three times then turn ignition off and on to start the engine . The Security light was flashing in the message center the week before it would not start.

Is a 1994 Saturn starter compatible with a 1995 Saturn car?

what you have to determine is if the engine is a DOHC (SC2, SL2, SW2) or SOHC (SC1, SL1, SW1) engine. they should be interchangable given the engine is the same.

Doesnt have to even be the same, single or dual have basically the same lower ends so you can swap any 1.9 Saturn starters.

Will not start or turn over engine?

Do any of your lights work ? If not , it sounds like a bad battery cable connection or a

dead battery The light all works the battery cable and connection or ok,

it is a auto matt,

A Mazda truck was driving in 5th gear going only 60. when put into neutral it just shut off. Steam was coming from under the hood and the reservior was overflowing. The car wont start. Head gasket?

It's quite possible. It definitely sounds like you've got some sort of overheating problem. Check things once it's all fully cooled down. If you have a bad head gasket expect pressure to build up in the cooling system before the engine warms up much at all. Test kits are available.

You might have some other cooling system problem. Consider lack of flow caused by a faulty water pump or thermostat or a low coolant level due to some sort of leak or a problem such as a clogged (internally) radiator or blocked (externally) radiator or a coolant leak or a low pressure condition (bad cap) or inoperative cooling fan.

Luckily for you, your Mazda might be one of many Ford vehicles with a Cylinder Head Temperature sensor which allows the PCM to stall the engine when temperatures get too high and head gasket failure could happen soon.

Your van will not start nothing happens when you turn the key on battery is fully charged and have power only going to the horn and headlights?

You may have a bad starter solenoid. You did not say what type of van this is; location can vary. Check power to the keyswitch. If there's power IN, be suspicious of the keyswitch itself. you may also want to check yhe neutral safety switch. if you play with the shifter move it up and down and when you put it on park again the van turns on you have found your problem.also try putting your vehicle in neutral check if it works. when neutral safety switch is bad the symptoms would be, nothing happens when the key is turn.. this is the same symptom for the starter relay problem. try a headlight start test. turn on your headlights, try turning your vehicle on if the lights stay bright you may have an open in the starting system. if the lights dim you may have a shorted starter solenoid or a bad ground.

Where is the starter located on a 1997 Plymouth voyager van?

Answer

I just had a problem with the starter for my '97 Voyager as well and through a little bit of detective work (and a lot of crawling around on my back) I found the starter. If you go under the vehicle from the driver's side (right behind the front left wheel) you'll see a little mechanism hanging under the engine. It has quite a few wires running in and out of it, and a metal skid plate for protection underneath it, and a round black plastic piece on the top.

If you're having the same problem as I was (all of your electrical equipment worked - power windows, doors locks, lights - but the car just wouldn't start), you can take a hammer and bang lightly on the plastic portion while someone else turns the key, and the car should start up so you can move it around. You can continue starting it in this manner for a short while, but you should replace the starter as soon as possible.

I have a 1997 Plymouth voyager that was manufactured in Canada. The starter on it was located behind the radiator mid way of the engine. Bolts were tight, took one hour for removal and is helpful if you have some one from the top hold the starter as you loosen the bolts. There are two bolts, one on the bottom and one on the top. The bolt on the top is in a hard place and will take plenty of patience to remove.

What is a throttle stop?

Simply a device to prevent the throttle from moving more than a pre-determined amount.

On "butterfly" throttle plate equiped engines this can be to stop the throttle plate from moving past the ideal highest flow point. If it moves past this point the air flow can hold the throttle open.

In other cases a throttle stop can be used to limit the amount of power the engine can produce by limiting how much throttle can be employed. Common an small beginer quads and motorcycles so daddy can keep the speed down to a non-fatal level.

Why does a 96 sunfire turn over but wont start?

You could have a fuel pressure problem, lack of spark, malfunctioning computer, or internal engine damage.

Why do your engine drag when trying to start?

Could be flat or very low battery - check with a good meter, it should show at least 11.9 volts at rest. Check both terminals are clean and tight. Check ground wire where it's bolted to the frame for clean and tight.

A fully charged battery will read 12.6 volts with the engine off. At 75% charge it will read 12.4 volts, at 50% it will read 12.2 volts, & at 25% charge it will read 12 volts. Any less and the battery is basically dead. Must be checked with a digital volt meter. It may also be the engine is to slow in time. Can also be the starter is failing.

Where is the starter on a 99 s-10 pickup?

The starter on a 99 S10 is on top of the transmission. It is at the back of the engine and can be removed from under the hood.

Your 97 Civic makes a ticking noise when starting up in the cold?

It could be a sticking hydraulic lifter or valves that are slightly out of adjustment.

Why after on 2-3 days of installing a new battery the car lights will dim and wont start?

A battery is only an electrical STORAGE device; when functioning properly it stores electrical energy.

On the other hand, the ALTERNATOR produces the electrical energy to operate all of the electric components in the vehicle AND sends additional electrical energy to the battery for storage so that the starter can function NEXT time you want to start the engine.

If the alternator is not functioning properly the battery will eventually discharge. That doesn't mean anything is wrong with the battery, it just hasn't been given anything to store. Have a reputable auto parts retailer test your charging system for you.

At this point you should be suspicious of the alternator.

With the key in the 'accessories' position it has power. When the key is moved to the start position the car loses power completely. Any suggestions?

When the key is in the "start" position all accesssories are designed to be "locked out" to concentrate all the available power to the starting circuit. How about the "on" position - do accessories have power at that position? - if not could be a bad ignition switch
