There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.

You need a scan tool to properly reset the check engine light.

After repairing the cause of the code, you clear with a scan tool.

With an OBD II reader. Instructions come with the reader. Codes are standard.

Could be lots of things. You should have it checked for codes. The temp gauge problem would make me think of a possible temp sensor problem. It should be located near the thermostat housing.

Go to auto zone and have the codes read for free. This may cure both problems. Mine did the same thing... it was a sensor in the wheel bearing that went bad. Apparently, it is not an uncommon issue. I have replaced 4 bearings (only in the front wheels).

Depending on what you mean what can you do, in NC the smog can be waived, if you apply early enough. I would see about checking the codes else where maybe someone will know more than just following the trail that the computer based on experience from the silly things

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram Truck. I first turned the ignition off-on off-on off-on and the code P1492 appeared in the odometer. That code means the battery temp sensor is bad. I found that the sensor was not attached. I had some work done on the truck and they forgot to reconnect it. So, I reconnected it. I unhooked the positive battery cable for about a minute and cleaned the terminals just for fun while I waited. Presto, it cleared the check engine light.

Always unhook the negative cable first.

On the left end of the dash there is a fuse panel . Remove the cover. There is a black plastic covered memory fuse that pulls out a little. It's almost in the middle. Pull this out until it stops and leave it pulled out about 15 minutes, this will clear the check engine light. However, if the problem is not fixed it will most likely come back on within a 100 miles or so.

My 91 Tempo used to stall on me at stop lights and stop signs. I just turned the idle up on it. I'm not sure about the check engine light however. Mine is constantly on and everyone who looks at it can't seem to find out why. You also might want to check your PCV valve.

The problem with the Monte Carlo is in the Security system itself I own a 2001 SS and it use to do the same thing. The security system does not recognize the key, when you use the key pad to enter the car. The only way I got it to work correctly was to Stop using my key FOB (remote). If you have the problem where your vehicle will not start, Get out, put the key in the door with it closed and turn the key to unlock for 10 seconds. It tells the car that the key was used to open the door not the key FOB.

It means your engine needs service. Most times there is a problem with the emmisions control. You can buy a repair manual that will tell you how to get the code from the engine that will tell you what is wrong. You need to disconect a plug in the engine compartment and jump from one cantact to the other. It's easy to do once you read the manual. The light will blink a code (2-1-3)... look up the code in the manual and it will tell you what is wrong. Don't panic. The light can come on for some pretty simple problems.

The check engine light comes on to tell you some part of your engine system is not functioning as it should. Soem large auto stores like AutoZone offer free diagnostics. There is a computer outlet or plug in port under the dash of yoru car. A scanning tool, handheld programmer will be plugged in to that port and it will download the codes inside the computer on your car. Once this data is downloaded, it will give a code number which will have to be crosschecked to see what the code means. Your car's check engine light will remain on until this fault is fixed. Sometimes a check engine light will come on and then go out. Did you recently add fuel to your car? Make sure you screw the gas cap on tight, otherwise the check engine light will come on due to the pressure of the fuel not being what is required. Tightening the gas cap will not immediately shut off the check engine light. Normally the computer will monitor the engine and after 50 miles or a certain number of cycles it will shut off the check engine light. If your gas cap is tight and the check engine light stays on, then you are in need of diagnostics.

There is oil in the fourth cylinder spark plug hole. You need to replace the spark plugs, wires and the valve cover gasket. My 1998 had the same problem. The Wires are expensive because you have to buy the coil pack with it. But this will solve your issue.

It could be the EGR valve, oxygen sensor or who knows what. You'll need to connect to a code scanner. You can borrow, rent or buy one at most auto parts retailers. If they aren't busy, the employees may even help you figure it out, all in hopes of selling you something.

Apparently,... Yes. I have a 2002 Chevy Cavalier. My check engine light was coming on randomly for a week. Then, my trac off light would come on, and my car would die, while running, a few minutes later. I had my car in a repair shop for a week. The technician said he couldn't find anything wrong. I brought my car to auto zone, and they did a scan test on it, for free. The code came back to me needing a new TPS. The TPS cost me $50. I am getting an estimate on putting it in tomorrow. Apparently, the way it was explained to me, the TPS is somehow electrically connected to the ABS, which is connected to the traction. Go to Auto Zone. Get a scan.

Problem with emission system or fuel cap not installed properly

Remove spark plug wire and hold near engine block (with insulated gloves) to see if it is firing - if so may have to do a compression check to see if problem is internal

If your check engine light is staying on , that indicates that a malfunction has been detected with the emission control system . You need to have your Explorer scanned for any trouble codes in order to diagnose and repair the problem , then the light can be reset
