EGR Systems

When the temperature in the combustion chamber becomes extremely hot, nitrous oxides are formed, which then turn into smog. In order to reduce such occurrence, the exhaust gas recirculation system minimizes the temperature in the combustion chamber.

What are the functions of the egr valve on a 2002 ford escape and how does this affect the transmission?

The EGR valve controls the recycling of exaust gasses back into the intake in order to regulate NOx emmisions. Since this is a vacuum type device, a leak could effect many other systems. It is tied to the PCM (powertrain control module) so a problem could concievably cause a lot of strange problems, including with your transmission. But any malfunction would most certainly generate an error code, if not a multitude of them.

Where is the EGR valve on a 1998 Honda Civic LX?

under the hood on the engine The egr valve on the 98 civic is (standing in front of the car facing back with hood open) to the immediate left of the aluminum fuel rail that holds the injectors. It is cylindrical, metal with a black plastic top and has a gray connector going to it. The base of it appears open where the solenoid mechanism goes into the valve. I am also having a problem with mine, it is not opening all the way. I think time for a new one.

How do you test egr valve Chevy 5.7 v8?

An exhaust gas recirculation valve, or "EGR" valve, is an emissions-control devise which reduces the amount of nitrogen which escapes into the atmosphere. The EGR does this by routing a portion of the exhaust gases back into the intake manifold, where those chemicals are burned for a second time in the combustion chambers. A defective EGR valve commonly results in a rough idle and a decrease in power and fuel efficiency. Chevrolet equipped its 1990 passengers cars with a ported-type EGR valve. Fortunately, this type of EGR valve is the easiest to test. Difficulty:Moderately Easy

InstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Hand-vacuum pump
    • 1

Apply the parking brake and shift the transmission into either "Park" or "Neutral."

    • 2

Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.

    • 3

      Turn the engine off.

    • 4

Inspect the rubber vacuum hose that attaches to the top of the EGR valve for signs of cracks or kinks. A damaged EGR hose should be replaced.

    • 5

Pull the rubber vacuum hose off of the top of the EGR valve.

    • 6

Press the hose which extends from the bottom of a hand-vacuum pump over the nipple on top of the EGR valve. This is the same nipple from which the rubber vacuum hose was attached to.

    • 7

Apply 10 inches of vacuum to the valve with the hand-pump.

    • 8

Position a mirror underneath the top of the EGR valve to inspect the valve's diaphragm. The diaphragm should remain open under the 10 inches of vacuum for a minimum of 20 seconds. If the diaphragm does not open, of if the needle on the hand-pump gradually drops before 20 seconds have expired, the EGR valve leaks and must be

What does obd dtc p1402 mean on 1998 dodge 5.9 magnum with no egr valve?

I would double check that that is the actual code stored in the PCM. That is a code for EGR and you are correct that you do not have EGR.

How to test the EGR control solenoid?

I have a 95 Altima. I tested the EGR solenoid valve by using a multimeter. Disconnect the two-wire connector that plugs into the solenoid valve. When engine is cold and ignition turned on the two wires from the harness should read 12volts. Momentarily touch the connector to the socket on the solenoid valve and you should hear an audible click as the solenoid valve snaps open and closed. Also you can check the continuity of the solenoid valve coil. It should show good continuity and not "open." If you can read ohms on your meter you can also check the coil and it should read about 50 ohms if it is good. I was getting a P1400 code and thought my solenoid valve might be bad. It tested good so I removed the EGR valve and found it to be carboned up. A little choke cleaner fixed it up. Also the metal return tube that goes to the exhaust manifold was also carboned up. So far this has cured my problem.

Where is the EGR valve on a 1995 Mercury Villager van?

The EGR valve on the Villager/Quest is located at the top-rear drivers ride of the intake plenum. You will see 2 parts that look almost identical. They look almost like 2 little flying saucers. One is the BPT and the other is the EGR valve. A common problem on these vans, is the rubber tube that goes between the two parts. This hose usually cracks and splits or becomes plugged with carbon. This will trip the check engine light and an EGR code will be present. Replace the little rubber hose (its usually in stock at your Ford or Nissan dealer) and you should be good to go.Good Luck!

What is valve lead?

In automotive applications, it is the number of degrees of the crankshaft before the top or bottom center, at which the intake or exhaust valves open or close.
