egr valve used to reduce emmisions. the valve will open at driving speeds to reburn exaust gases. when one fails it will usually be in the open position thus the engine will run rough at Idell.

First remove spark plug wires from the top of the valve cover. then remove bolts or nuts around the edge of valve cover. once removed. take off cover and replace o-rings and gasket. gasket is located around edge of cover and o-rings are o shaped rubber gaskets on the cover around the holes where the wires normally go through. be sure to replace cover the same way you remove it. estimated cost would be $35 for just gasket and 0-rings it is recommended to also replace wires and spark plugs when doing this.that cost would be 60-$90 depending on make of vehicle.

You can remove the EGR valve from your 1965 Mercedes ML 320 by removing the valve retaining screws. Remove the vacuum line from the Bell. Reverse the process to install the new valve.

Has the rad ever been flushed? Try that if there is no indication of water pump failure (leaking or venting coolant from pump.)

Unless you definitely know the valve is bad and needs to be replaced, check to be sure the 2 ports in the throttle body elbow are clean. To do this, you will need to remove the intake elbow on top of the engine. Usually they will be plugged with carbon. This yielded a P0401 code for my truck. If the egr valve was stuck open, the engine wouldn't idle. If the egr valve was stuck closed you may hear excessive pinging (spark knock) and in most vehicles, the check engine light would illuminate.

The EGR valves don't fail like they used to, due to better materials- silicon rubber diaphrams which can withstand the heat from the engine. What you probably have is a clogged port inside the manifold underneath the valve. To test the valve, you would hook up a hand vacuum pump, start the engine, apply vaccum, and if the engine stumbles, and almost dies, then the valve is working. If there is a problem with the solenoid, it would trigger a code in the pcm, and in effect illuminating your check engine light.

I can tell you its a pain in the rear end. The PCV is located on the rear valve cover. However, they didnt give you enuf room to get to it, or pull it out, or replace it. And if you do get it out, you run a HIGH risk of disconnecting the tube that goes from the PCV valve into the underside of the intake. And then things really become a pain in the rear.

i just had a similar problem well after changing fuel filter,plugs,wires,pcv valve map sensor(all was not the problem)i found it to be the crankshaft position sensor,changed it and the car runs like new hope this helps

My EGR valve stuck on my '90 Mustang. All I did was to remove it and use some spray Wynns Carb Cleaner to remove all the carbon deposits. That was a year ago and the engine has been smooth as silk from then on. It's an easy job - make sure when you put it back that the connections are clean and tight and the gaskets are leak-proof.

So go ahead, clean it - it's cheaper than a new one!

Also, be very careful with any chemical that you use to clean it - most are harmful if you breath them in.

The EGR valve is hidden under the air filter box. It lies on top of the intake manifold, just in front of the throttle body. It will have a vacuum line leading to the T.B. as well. Test it by sucking on it's hose and feeling under the round dome. The valve should move, and not return until you let air back in.

Yes, if the valve is bad. With the car idling, move the EGR valve diaphragm with your fingers. The engine should quit or want to quit. If it doesn't do this, it could be plugged up. Remove the EGR valve and clean any carbon deposits in the valve and also do the same on the engine side where the EGR valve is connected. If the EGR has never been removed before, it will probably have carbon buildup.

1. If you see XZZ in your VIN then you use the first one. If you do not see it then you use the 'except' option. I just went through this myself.

2. A Dodge or Chrysler dealer can use the VIN to sort out which you need.

HM12MSC Comments: I can't say with absolute certainty that one wouldn't/couldn't ever find "XZZ" in the VIN as stated in answer No. 1; however, I believe this method of part confirmation could result in purchasing the wrong part (e.g., XZZ is not in the VIN on my 2005 Grand Caravan SXT; however, my van does have this option, because it's listed on my original dealer invoice and is described as "Mid Model Year Tracking" whatever that means).

Therefore, I believe that answer No.2 is the best for determining the proper part unless you have a copy of the dealer invoice.

The EGR is on the right front corner of the engine, just above the alternator.

I am not going to try to discourage you from doing your own repairs. What I hope to do is try to help you to save time and money. Has your car been in a repair shop and the EGR valve is guarenteed to fix your problem? I have had numerous occasions that a car was brought to me that Brand A auto parts got a code and said that it was the EGR valve. We scanned it and it was an EGR code and the valve was NOT bad. It was a 50 cent hose we replaced and NOT a $200.00 valve. It is to costly to assume.

pull it off and clean with some carb cleaner

the advantages of an egr valve is that it dump exhaust gas back into the cylinder to cool down cumbustion temp so your vehicle doesn't release harmful gasses into the air

Test it with a vacuum hand pump.

There is no EGR valve on an Aspire.

A bad/clogged EGR or pcv valve can cause a motor to shutter, idle erratically, hesitate and/or stumble on acceleration and have decreased performance. Some emission control systems can be sensitive enough that it in theory could happen. W/ some nissans and hyundais a oil fill cap or fuel tank cap that is left off will cause a motor to die. I have personally experienced it w/ a 91 Nissan stanza and a 06 sonata.
