Remove the trans pan and then the filter.

If the pan is on the front of the transmission, it cannot be replaced without rebuilding the transmission; because the bearings must be removed in order to get to the filter.

Ford Contour transmissions do not have removeable filters. There is a metal screen which generally never needs to be replaced.

Unscrew it and remove it then put on the new one. If you can't get to the ends you may have to renove the p/s fron the engine

Clean it or replace it.

The 4 cylinder engine has no EGR valve and the V-6 rarely fails. If you're getting an EGR flow overspeed or underspeed code, you simply need to clean the EGR passages at the back of your throttle body. You can have a shop do it for $100 or simply get a TB gasket and do it yourself. Once you remove the TB and gasket you will understand what to do. Put a sheet of common aluminum foil under the TB to catch all the chunky crud. You don't need that dropping onto your transmission case.

I was told to have #1 and #2 cyelenders up and have the marks on the camshafts strait up im not sure if this is true.

if its the turbo model when i did mine once i removed the casings you will see the notches on the pulleys and they all line up with the notches in the back plastics,buy a manual disc off eBay you will see wot i mean.

No. The chipped ignition key did not start until the 1998 model year and was only on the 6 cylinder Contour and Mystique.

(I've got a '97 6 cylinder Contour that seems to have a chip in the key.)

Could be a faulty fan motor, a faulty fan motor relay, a faulty fan motor temp switch or a blown fan motor fuse.

The CHMSL (center high mounted stop light) is activated by a circuit independent of the outboard stop/turn lamps. Outboard stop lamps become left or right turn signals when interupted by the turn signal switch/flasher circuit. The CHMSL must remain independent to escape the interuption of the turn flasher. The circuit that powers the outboard stop/turn lamps and the CHSML share the same fuse on GM, Ford and others are probably the same. The 12v feed passes through the brake light switch before it splits to independent feeds: one straight to the CHMSL, the other to the turn switch/flasher which splits it into a separate feed for either the left or right lamps. My best guess is your OK at least to the brake switch. The problem lies beyond and my experience would lead my initial search for a faulty ground in the rear lamp harness. Good luck, it's a cold day for working on a car.

I believe if it is the same as my 1995 countour, then there is one under the hood by the drivers side tire. There is also one under the dash board on the passanger side. However, I may be wrong. the fuse box on a 97 ford contour is under the dashboard on the drivers side... its a little box and theres a button you have to press on the right of it and it will pop down.

Most likely your AC just needs service, All it needs is some freon, Seems like when it starts running low it blows hot air from right to left as it gets low.

Use a chain wrench around the pulley and a breaker bar on the bolt.

This can only be done by Ford dealer. It is expensive!

A 1998 Mercury Mystique with the 4-cylinder 2.0 DOHC appears to have a non-interference engine. Therefore, if the timing belt breaks, there should be no damage to the valves/pistons.

Your fuse under the dash board to the left of the break petal must be burnt out

The filter is located under the windshield cowl on the passenger side. Turn the wipers on till they reach the middle of the window, shut them off so they are pointing up. There are 4 screws that hold it in place. 2 are under a plastic cap on the top, and 2 are on the firewall. Remove them then lift the cowl up and there it is.

check your engine monts you can do this by having someone stand a long side of the car looking at the engine put the car into drive and se if the engine jerks left or right go back and forth to drive and reverse if it moves a lot then your engine mont is bad

The computer should recognize the repair after some time and shut the light off on its own, there are other ways though. 1. Remove the neg battery cable for about a minute or so and the computer will reset ( you will lose your radio memory though and possible lock out the radio if it has an anti theft device), or 2. pull the engine control computer fuse in the engine compartment fuse panel for a couple of minutes.
