Ford Explorer XLS

Ford Explorers are good SUVs. They're very powerful for a mid size SUV and the powertrain is very reliable. The 4.0L V6 engines have been known to go for 600,000 miles trouble free. I have an '04 Ford Explorer with the 4.0L V6 and I've only had 1 problem with it. The check engine light came on and I took it to my auto shop and they said nothing was wrong. They got the light to go off and it has ran perfect ever since. That wasn't even really a problem. Mine has almost 90,000 miles on it and not once has it let me down.

For the Ford 4.6 liter V8 engine :

The firing order is ( 1 - 3 - 7 - 2 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 8 )

The cam sensor and the crank sensor replace the need for a distributor on all modern cars which use a computer to send the fire signal to the correct spark plug. Both signals are necessary to do this. A failure of either one will cause the engine to die. Over time, both of these failed on my 92 PA. This usually happened after the engine got hot. Allowing it to cool down it would start again and run for a short time period. I had it repaired at a Buick dealer and it cost about $300. I don't know how hard it would be to do it yourself.

There is no better. If your car is designed to run on 87 octane then using 93 octane is a total waste of money. The higher octane will provide no more power, no better fuel economy, and is of no benefit to the engine whatsoever. In fact using a high octane fuel in an engine designed for 87 octane may actually cause hard starting. Use exactly the octane as recommended by the manufacturer of the vehicle. Saying that, if your car is designed to run on 93 octane then using 87 octane can be detrimental to the engine due to pre-detonation that will be caused by running the lower octane fuel. It depends on whether the manufacturer recommends the use of higher octane fuel or says it is mandatory. Most vehicles built in the last few years where 93 octane is recommended can run on 87 octane with a slight loss in power. The engine fuel management system will adjust for the lower octane and there will be no harm to the engine. The bottom line is to use exactly what the manufacture recommends.

Ok here is the deal. Craks in heads sometimes are so small. it could be a hairline crack, and you wouldn't even Know it. Whats it doing? Is it blowing out white smoke? Another way to check Head gaskets or head leaks, is make sure your Radiator resevour is full at cold or warm take off cap and if you see Bubbles popping up in the resevour. Then it's either a head gasket or the head. Most likely it's just the head gasket. But since you have to pull the head off anyways, always a good idea to have the head checked by a Machine shop that specialises in head work. To check it out, should not cost more than 25 bucks. Better safe than sorry. After all just replacing the head gasket will cost you about 100 bucks are so, depending on the set up. i would spend the extra 25 bucks to make sure i don't waste my money. Not a good idea to replace head gaskets if you have no clue what you are doing. The head bolts come off in a certain order. as in loosining before removing one bolt etc. Plus the have to be retightened in a certain way and tourqued down to proper specs. Hope that helps you out some.

Obtain a Haynes or Chilton manual for the make, model, and year of your car. The answer will probably be in there. Assuming that the gas gauge has a fuse...I don't know if they do or not. The manual would likely have troubleshooting steps to resolve whatever problem you're having with your gas gauge. You might find such a manual at the library. Otherwise, you can buy one at a parts store, or on amazon.com, or eBay.

If you can't remove the metal mount, why would you want to remove it to reglue it back on?

Because you might want to place it in a different location, because of height of driver, or in my case , I own a driving school and we have to place another rearview mirror for our instructors. When we sell the cars we must remove the second mirror and the metal(baseplate) . I also would like to know a good way to remove this baseplate

You have a bad sending unit. You have to pull the gas tank to replace it.

(, no you don't. There is an access panel under the passenger side rear seat directly over the top of the gas tank.

My 99 made a loud howling noise that seemed to come from the air cleaner. It was actually the Idle Air Control Valve(IAC)motor mounted on the right side of the throttle body. It is a silver cylinder mounted by two bolts and has an electrical connector on the end of the cylinder. It get gunked up with soot it is about $80 new. You can clean it with solvent, but it is only a temporary fix. Best replace it before it goes south. I would suspect the power steering pump. Check the P/S pump fluid level. If it is full, then listen carefully to the pump. If it is whining, it is bad.

Throttle position sensor is located on the side of the throttle body-in line with the throttle shaft. To locate the throttle body, you can have someone repeatedly push the accellerator pedal (with the engine not running) while you look for the moving throttle shaft. Drew

I have a 1997 dodge carivan the air bag light came on and remained on. I took the steering wheel off and found the clockspring was broken all the way through, it stopped my horn, cruise control and the air bag light was on any time the ignition was turned on. If you do the work yourself make sure you disconnect the neg. side of battery and wait 2 min. before working on the air bag part..

No it will not set the air bag off, the airbag computer will not send a signal for deployment unless there is a crash. It is a serious safety issue though and you should get if fixed, the clock spring is fairly cheap ($40-50).

I have a 93 Honda Civic LX with the same problem. I had everything replaced and nothing worked. I took it to a very good electrician and he figured out the problem for me. Its a connector that connects the Master window switch to the rest of the car windows. Mine had moisture damage so it worked on and off and only with certain windows. But the rest of the window switches operated the windows fine. It should be in the door panel/hidden around the door hinge.

The 4.0 liter SOHC has ( 3 ) timing CHAINS and if it is 4x4 it has a 4th chain

May be the fuse holder itself as they get older the do not hold the fuses or make good contact--try bending or hard wiring w/in line fuse
