Heating AC and Engine Cooling

Heating, air conditioning (AC) and engine cooling require a radiator to transfer heat. Heating a cabin requires heat to be transferred from an engine block. Engine cooling blows the heat out of the engine. AC uses refrigerants to cool air.

Why is 1998 Camry cooling fan not coming on when engine is hot but turned off?

I had a problem with the cooling fans not coming on when the car was at rest.... so when i would stop at lights the temp would start rising... i ended up working out you can override the faulty circuit by turning on your a/c when you pull up and that overrides it and they turn on and no more over heating..

What could be causing a 98 Chevy 4WD Astro that has a working water pump no leaking hoses or radiator and working thermostat to overheat even when 50-50 coolant circulation seems fine?

you probably have an blown intake gasket and/or a blown head gasket. The gm gaskets do not hold up to the red coolant and are eaten away. I just had it replaced on mine.

Where is the thermo switch on a peugeot 206 1.4?

located at the bottom of the radiator, you can see it on the left drivers side if you look through the grill on the front bumper should be 2 wires in it red & blue.

How do you fix it when you are getting no power to the fuse box for the car heater?

Depending on the make/model of your car there maybe a fuse box under the hood with a fuse for the heater. The fuse is bigger than the one that's under the dash and of course it costs more!!

The larger fuses are called Maxi Fuse's and they are typically labelled rather well depending on what make and model car you have. However, if your unsure about which one you need or even where they're located. Most reputable parts stores such as Napa, Autozone, Pepboys are very helpful in helping you determine which Maxi Fuse under the hood, supplys the power to the distribution block under your dash. It's best to know which one you need and what size AMP is required. You may be able to contact your local dealer's serevice department and ask them if they know which Maxi Fuse you need. I'm sure that giving them all the detailed information on your car, what size motor, with or w/o air conditioning, etc... that should put you on the road to a heated vehicle very soon.

Where do you find the location of a cooling fan relay on a 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ceria?

cooling fan relays very seldom go out, I would check the cigarette lighter, first and make sure it is not shorting out .people spend lots of money buying water pumps, radiators etc, when it is not needed on these cars the fans run on the same circut as the lighter, just got through buying a 1994 cutless for $50 because it was heating up and they thought it was the block afer they replaced all water componets, I pulled it home got a screw driver and pulled a penny that was stuck in the lighter sockett, returned the penny to the owner now I am happy motoring

How do you fix a rain and AC water pan under the passenger side that is blocked?

Water pan is not something that I am familiar with, but if you are getting water on the floor on the passenger side then your heater core may be leaking, the drain tube for the ac is blocked ( it sticks out through the firewall on the passenger side and can be cleaned out with a coat hanger or compressed air).

How do you change engine cooling thermostat on Mazda 323?

Very easily and quickly apparently, look for the hose that comes out of your RAD on top, this leads to the thermostat housing, there you will find two bolts, unscreww, take out thermostat and gasket, look as far as you can and chuck it in that direction, now the tricky bit, these ye old mazdas use a metal water bypass system, u needen worry about this, just be very careful of it, one push in the wrong direction, and they are history, having said that, get some silicon gasket sealer and create a gasket, or get a new one, and a new thermostat, instal, bolt up, and hey presto, thank you, Blu Dragon to the rescue once more.

Where is the engine cooling fan relay in a 2001 Lincoln Continental?

believe it is in power distribution box along with other relays and fuses. it is activated by the engine coolant temperature sensor.

How do you bleed the cooling system on a caprice?

the screw on thermostat housing. loosen up and add fluid till no more air bubbles come out then tighten down

Where is the 97 blazer blower motor?

What could be damaged when an engine overheats?

How is your heat? Overheating can cause damage generally to head gasket, cylinder head or thermostat. See other posts regarding headgaskets in this forum. answer you can damage whole engine thru overheating but if u had no coolant leak when overheating occurred, u need to check water pump and thermostat in engine

Why is my 2001 Ford Focus overheating even after replacing the thermostat radiator fan assembly radiator cap and coolant?

For me the fan was not turning on and the car got hot. In the meantime, I would turn the a/c on to get the other fan to kick in and the motor would cool off.

I got tired of doing that and I asked my dear old dad to help. This is what he did:

My 83 year father figured it out without spending a dime. (Ford dealer wanted $95 dollars just to look at it!)

#1 Look at the fan shroud and locate the sensor that goes into the shroud. Remove the sensor from the shroud and and disconnect it from each other.

#2 Clean the inside of the connectors. Mine were filthy.

#3 Put back together.

Ford should know this already. My father was in disbelief on why the connection was'nt better protected.

Which way to turn the petcock on the radiator to drain water on a 1997 ford escort?

FACING the petcock, turn it CLOCKWISE, as if you are screwing it IN. Many times it is a little rusted and hard to turn. Before you start, spray it with any number of products available for rusted or stuck threads, such as WD-40. Then use pliers to gently turn the petcock to the RIGHT. GOOD LUCK!

Where is the radiator drain petcock on a 2000 Chevy Lumina?

There may not be one, My 2000 Lumina has a plug on the lower drivers side of the radiator that can be replaced with a petcock. Rather than do this I removed the lower radiator hose to facilitate flushing the cooling system.

Why does your AC cool your engine when it's overheating while driving?

Sounds Like Your Engine Fan Has Stopped Working, Or You Are Not Getting Enougn Air Moving Through Your Radiator. How It Works You Have A Fan That Runs When Your Engine Reaches a Tempature For It To Turn On. If You Turn The A/C On It Will Run The Other Fan For Pulling Air Through Your A/C Condensor & Help Cool The Engine Also. Have The Fan Checked. Hope This Helps

How can you tell if engine overheating has warped or cracked heads or blown a head gasket?

Have a compression test run to see if you have a problem with the head or gasket. Once you find out you do, then you must remove the heads in order to determine what the problem is. Have the heads inspected at a machine shop to determine if they are warped or cracked. Once the heads are removed the gasket must be replaced so it really makes no difference.

How do you change the heater core on a 1976 Chevy half-ton pickup without AC?

You first have to drain the radiator, then you diconnect the heater hoses to your heater core .in the engine compartment.

Then you remove the cover off the heater core assembly under the passenger side , under the glove box.

Then you take straps off the heater core off. and replace . Install every thing you removed previously and refill your radiator and your done.

You have a 99 Chevy Malibu that is overheating and you've replaced the thermostat and checked the water pump and its OK and the radiator cap is good to Do you know what else it could be?

What size engine? Are you losing coolant(this may be internal or external)? Is your oil level rising? This is critical to anwer these questions. The 3.1 (if you have it)motor can be tricky. 2 common problems are intake manifold gasket and the water pump. When the water pump leaks on these, it can be difficult to verify. Look for dried coolant spray on the hood or on the passenger side of the radiator in relation to the water pump. Also look for a rusted flat surfaced pulley of the water pump, or try to check for moisture on the inside the pulley-easier said than done.

You may havt bleed off the air that is in the cooling system. Their is a bledder just above the #2 spark plug ( it is a very small bolt that turns ccwise) I t is connected to a solid blck tube that runs horizontily above the front valve cover and connects to the block. Good Luck

How do you diagnose and fix heater blend door problems on a Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?

No. It is operated by an electric motor. But your problem may not be limited to the temp blend door motor. We also had problems with something in the heater box called a secondary stratification door. It works together with the blend door itself. Sometimes it would get warped and start hanging up. The solution is to replace the door with a revised door. It is also possible that you have an electrical problem in the heater blend door motor control circuit.

Mix door

The air mix door is malfunctioning or the controls are disconnected and allowing too much outside air to enter the cab. Sometimes you can get at the controls from the outside of the heater but you may have to open the heater to repair the mix door. Many times when cores are replaced the person forgets to reconnect the mix controls or breaks the connection unwittingly.

The blend door actuator motor is on the front side of the box and can be seen by fulling opening the glove box and looking to the left over the transmission tunnel. Pictures and diagnostic procedures are available at heatertreater.net.

The blend door on the Taurus is on a horizontal axis running from the front to back of the car. If you fully open the glove box, you can see the actuator motor in the far left hand side of the heater box. Access to the motor is trying, but not difficult. There is a metal cover held on with two screws and three additional screws that hold the motor in place. Additionally there is a miki-mauz lever system connected to the motor that controls the backside radiant heat door over the heater core. It is difficult to remove the lever system without breaking it.

If you pull the motor, you can examine the axle connector to the blend door and physically verify if it is broken. The Taurus has two major problem. 1) a block heater core and 2) broken blend door. The dealer solution to replacing the door is complicated and expensive.

It sounds like the control cable for the heater control valve may have slipped position, is now binding, or, that valve is partially blocked. Hopefully, the heater core needed replacing, and the heater control valve was'NT the problem all along. It is paramount that we find reputable and thorough mechanics. I'm not a mechanic, but I am a consumer who, like others, have been pinched before. Good luck on your thorough investigation !....BB

On a 99 Taurus, the blend door is controlled by an electric motor and this same motor module is used on multiple Ford products. The motor has the characteristic of over stressing the plastic blend doors when it goes through a periodic calibration routine. The net effect is a broken blend door and loss of control over temperature control. We have the Taurus on our development list at HeaterTreater and will have a simple cheap solution available this summer. As a stopgap, you can short circuit the coolant flow through the heater core and run in AC only mode for the summer.

The blend door actuator / motor is a rather common failure. Costs about $15, and the repair instructions can be found online (doesn't look too difficult with the ashtray & bracket removed)

See "Related Links" below

Nothing except normal plain old usage. They just fail. It is a motorized device built by human beings. It will and does go bad. There are plastic gears inside that wear out and electrical stuff that breaks down and dies.

If you mean that you can't mix the air (i.e. make the air warmer and cooler with the mixer knob) it may not be the valve. My 99 stopped mixing about 6 months ago with 94,000 miles. Then a couple of weeks ago the "tee" for the heater bypass hose sprang a leak. I had the hose assembly replaced, but the car started overheating when the engine speed was low, as in traffic. We got it home from New Orleans to Jacksonville, FL by adding water every two or three hundred miles. I then came to this site and decided to have the water pump replaced. When I got back to the garage, he showed me the pump. THERE WERE NO VANES ON THE PUMP!!!!! It looked like a little waffle on a stick. Now I know why it would overheat - not a lot of water was circulating without any vanes.

Try replacing the synchronizer assembly that is under the camshaft position sensor. I had to replace it in my 96 Taurus. I work in a repair shop and we have don't it in a 97 Taurus also.
