There should be an idler pulley that you need to loosen to take belt off, draw a diagram of how the belt looks before you take it off so you can see how it goes back on.

1 Locked up pulley(A/C Compressor,Power Steering Pump,Smog Pump,Water Pump,Idler 2 Pulley or Tensioner Pulley)

3 Broken belt tensioner(out of adjustment or broken,missing spring)

4 Pulleys out of alignment

5 Wrong size belt

i have a 96 windstar, 3800cc, maybe about the same, take a long prybar to the slot on top of back component, maybe power steering pump on yours, it will be on a tension spring, push down. this should give enough slack to get the belt on or off, if not loosen the altenater bolts just enough to give another quarter inch.

Go get a 1894-1995 Chrylser minivan Haynes manual at the local checker, pep boys, auto zone type store and it has serp belt diagrams for all the different types of engines that came on the van.

First and foremost, make sure you have a diagram before removing the old belt. If there isn�t one under the hood, get out the pencil and paper and draw it out labeling the pullies and arrows pointing to the direction the belt travels on them. Save this paper in the glove compartment when the job is done for future reference. As far as replacing goes, it depends on the engine. Believe it or not, they are different amongst manufacturers, makes and models, so Bclear! If there is a spring loaded tensioner, you�ll need to turn the tensioner back to relieve pressure, and slide the belt off the tensioner pulley. Depending on the tensioner, you may be able to use a socket wrench with the right socket, 3/8� drive with socket wrench, or in some cases, you�ll need a tool that is meant for just this called a belt tensioner wrench. After it is relieved of tension, the belt can be removed. The new one gets routed the same, if you can�t remember, refer to your diagram. If you didn�t make one and can�t remember, listen closely and you�ll hear me laughing at you. Some belts require motor mounts to be removed and some are just plain nasty, such as the 1.9 motor found in ford escorts. If there is no tensioner. Look for a bolt going through a bracket that the alternater or power steering mounts to. Loosen the bolt, pry back whatever components keeps tension, and replace the belt. Make the tension respectfully taunt and tighten bolt back down after the belt is replaced..

one of the pullies that doesn't drive anything will have a bolt head in the center, turn this counterclockwise, and as you do so, the tesion will be removed. as soon as you let tension of the socket however, the tension will be re-instated.

First, I would remove the coolant resevoir,(just to get it out of the way) Then put in 3/8 to 1/4 adapter in the tensioner (ther is a square hole near the end) to get leverage. Then you can pry up with a long 3-4foot pry bar. I assume you just want to replace belt. I'm also assuming that your 3100 is the same as my 3100 in my 96 & 98.

It may sound stupid but try going to autozone, they might be able to show it to you on their computers or you could spend the extra money and get a chilton book The diagram from autozine is a very generic hand drawn layout which may help once you identify each pully component. I haven't been able to find a chilton or haynes repair manual for my 2002 zx2 escort. You are talking about the tension on your fan belt? If the belt is still on, use your ratchet to insert into the square hole on the tension arm. Use the ratchet as a lever to move the tension are so you can slip the belt off. Then just unscrew the arm, get the new on, screw it in, and replace the belt and you are good to go.

The 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2 liter engine drive belt diagram can be found in the owners manual. The belt diagram can also be obtained from most auto-parts stores, when you purchase the belt.

Must be similar to my 98 suburban. Make sure there is a sticker that tells you the routing for the belt somewhere on the front of the car under the hood. Buy a good gates belt. It may cost more, but its worth it. I put a cheaper one on that worked but made an unerving noise. Find the tensioner for the belt. Mine is right next to the alternator on 5.7 liter v8. Your objective is to relieve the tension on the belt at the tensioner and then pull the belt sideways off the tensioner. Once that is done, you just pull the belt out. You can unscrew the bolt in the middle of the tensioner out a ways and pull the tensioner out but not all the way out. this should release the belt. Make sure when you put the tensioner back on that you align the tang on the back of the tensioner in its hole.

Option 2: If you are strong enough, You should be able to force the tensioner with your hand to a lower position wihtout taking the tensioner off and then sliding the belt off and on. Remember to look at your belt routing when putting the new one on. You can do this. Good luck.

A serpentine belt is one belt that runs all engine accessories (i.e. power steering pump, ac compressor, water pump, AND fan). A fan belt runs the fan only.

To bypass your ac you can use a Valuecraft brand belt part # 360k4

It can if it is loose and slipping. The belt drives the water pump which moves coolant throughout the system.

there is a pully that moves to losen the belt, to find mine, I pulled on the belt to see what moved, then used a wrench(i don't remember the size right off hand) as leverage to losen the belt and pull it off. all in all, it's a 5 minute job, cuz they routed the belt over the top of the fan shroud.

remove the air duct (two 6mm bolts)

using a long 14mm wrench or socket, pull counterclockwise on the tensioner pulley, it's spring loaded so if the pulley you're on doesn't move, that's not the right one. as you're looking down, it's just to the left of the crack pulley.

remove the belt, slipping it around the fan, and then put the new belt in position. there's a diagram on a sticker on the hood. make sure the belt is in all the grooves or it'll shred it as soon as you start the car.

the tensioner is spring loaded, so you don't have to do anything after that.

reinstall the air duct.

It's usually on the inside of the hood when you open it, just look up.
