Starters and Ignition Systems

Ignition systems are found in all complex engines. They are attached to a power source that provides both the power to the system and to the starters in order to turn on the engine.

Is there anything on a GL1500 that goes bad that will cause the starter not to engage you can hot wire it and it works?

If you mean the key turns on and you have lights, the battery is ok. Yes you can hot wire it. First, make sure the kill switch is in the run position. You can also have a bad button and or wiring going to the starter relay. The relay is the switch that connects the battery to the starter. Check all cables from the battery. Check to see that the other side of the relay cable is tight, and is tight at the starter. The way to hot wire at the starter solenoid: just run/jump 12volts from from the battery side to the small nut/lug on side of solenoid. There are only three connections on it one big cable in (from battery), one big cable (to the starter). If this does not get the bike turning over, try taking a pair of pliers and using the handle ends, short the two big ends together. If it then turns over you have a bad starter soleinoid. Have key on, bike out of gear and choke on; bike should start. Hope this helps. Ben Parker,San Jose, Ca

How do you change a starter on a 1993 Ranger?

On a 1993 ford ranger 2 wheel drive 2.3L. Be sure to disconnect the battery before starting. First locate the starter on the bottom passenger side (under the hood), then remove the positive and negative wires connected to it by either removing the clip or unscrewing the 1/2 inch nut. Then remove the three (3), 1/2 inch by about 4 inch bolts with a socket or whatever. once those three bolts are out, you can just pull the whole thing out and then put the new one in, bolt it in and connect the wires the same way ou removed them.

Peace to your nines. I wouldn't want them to heat up. I don't wish that on anyone, kid.

How do you tell if your starter is dead?

What I do to test the starter with out taking it out of the rig is run power directly do the starter and by pass all the electronics.

sometimes that can be as easy as taking a screwdriver and jumping the terminals directly on the starter. Or taking jumper cables and hooking it up to the battery

if the started responds then you know!!!!

Install starter for 1995 Subaru Impreza?

two bolts holding the starter, 1 connected to the battery and another one though not sure what this was connected to. two bolts holding the starter: one on the top is easy to get to. might have been a 17mm. the bottom is easy if you have an extesion for your ratchet. start at the firewall and you can get to it fine. the bolt seems to be at an angle or something. i couldn't get a solid bite on it so be careful not to strip it. i think this was like 14mm, deffinitely not the same as the top. 1 connected to the batery. remove th rubber cover (just pull back with your fingers) and i think it was a 12mm. another one: this guy is below the wire to the battery. it's got a flat contact. just feel for the flat male end when reconnecting the wire back.

Just did this yesterday. The Top is a 17MM & bottom is a 14mm. The nut for the wire can be a different size on the new starter. That little 2nd wire IS IMPORTANT car won't start so make sure it's attached. You'll also need to use a stubby ratchet, not enough room otherwise. I use a quarter inch to three eighths adapter so I could use by quarter inch ratchet. Under 10 minuted to take out and under 5 to put back. Only tricky part is wiggling the starter out from under the hoses, but it can be done without taking anything else loose.

Why would a 1999 Honda CRV keep burning up coils?

The most common reason a Honda burns up coils is because other ignition components are worn out. A healthy igntiion system with new factory parts requires about 12,000 volts to fire a spark plug. An engine with worn out spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, and spark plug wires can require as much or more than 25,000 volts to fire a spark plug. The excess energy required to fire the spark plug has to be generated by the ignition coil and causes it to burn out.

Two additionl point. Always use factory Honda ignition component and replace the ignitor when replacing the coil. These parts are not cheap but Honda ignition systems work best and last the longest with Honda parts.

Where can you buy bolts for a starter?

If you know the pitch and thread count you may be able to find the proper grade bolt at your local hardware store. Your local auto parts store should have the proper bolts, based on your vehicle's year, make, and model. High quality bolts can also be bought from "Automotive Racing Products", or other on-line stores.

How do you install Ignition Kill Switches?

Answer 1 - Installing an Ignition "Kill" SwitchUnless you are intimately familiar with automotive electronics, I recommend having this done by someone who knows what he/she is doing as if done improperly could severely damage your vehicle.

Now, with the disclaimer warning out of the way, here are the "basics" of installing ignition kill switches.

1. Obtain a suitable switch and properly sized wire to match the ignition circuit,

2. Mount the kill switch in an appropriate location for easy access by driver,

3. Find and positively identify THE conductor [wire] that provides electrical power to the ignition circuit.

4. When you're ABSOLUTELY SURE you have the correct wire, CUT that wire, and

5. Connect a wire between one of the cut ends to one of the wires [or connector terminals on the kill switch,

6. Connect another wire from the "other" cut ignition wire to the other wire or terminal on the kill switch.

In effect, what you've done is too allow a method of turning off the power to only the ignition circuit, without turning off the ignition [key] switch which on most vehicles will "lock up" the steering wheel [creating a very dangerous situation].

WARNING This should be done by a PROFESSIONAL automotive Electronics Technician who knows what he/she is doing because done wrong could result in thousands of dollars worth of damage to your vehicle, including even the possibility of a fire which could destroy the entire vehicle!

What is the estimated cost for a new starter for a 1999 Toyota Tacoma?

Well, I'm about to have mine changed. And they're estimating it at $450. Ugh.

Howdy Motorheads, I just bought a remanufactured starter by Ultima for my '99 Taco V6 at O'Reilly Auto Parts. It was remanufactured in Mexico. It will be $100 plus some tax after I return the core. My local mechanic uses the same one so I suspect it is AOK.

I just now got the old one out. A difficult and sometimes frustrating job. Removal took me 4 days working on and off due to summer heat. I had to split the old starter in two to get it out. There is very little working room on the V6 4WD model. I posted removal procedure here on WikiAnswers on a separate question.

If the $450 includes a Toyota remanufactured starter I just might go for it. Toyota's remanufactured starter was $220 at the dealer. I suspect their remanufacturing procedures are under greater quality controls than most.

How do you replace an ignition switch on a 1995 Ford F-150?

1995 ford f-150. I replaced the one on my focus. I got a cylinder and with my vin number you put the numbered tabs in so you can use your old key. If you can turn the switch, turn your steering wheel and look for a little button that you can push to take out the cylinder, it should pull out if the key is in. If you can't turn it, you must drill into the cylinder where your key goes and thread an eye bold in it, use a puller and pull the cylinder out. then you will be able to turn it to get the housing out and put your new one it. ask you DEALER, they will be very helpful, even if you D-I-Y. It depends on what you are referring to. The "real" ignition switch isn't the key/lock cylinder. The ignition switch is at the bottom of the steering column. As always when dealing with electrical you should 1st disconnect battery ground. Remove the steering column shroud and lower the column. disconnect the wiring going to the switch. 2 nuts hold on the switch. Lift switch up to disengage the actuator rod and then remove switch. When re-installing, everything needs to be in the lock position for proper adjustment(the key needs to be in lock as well) put rod back in new switch, put back on column and loosely put on the nuts. Move switch up and down to locate mid position of rod lash then tighten the nuts. Remove the locking pin that came with the new switch. Return your column and hook up battery. make sure everything works..You're good to go.

Can't turn ignition to remove how else can you remove the ignition to replace?
