Starters and Ignition Systems

Ignition systems are found in all complex engines. They are attached to a power source that provides both the power to the system and to the starters in order to turn on the engine.

1996 mustang cobra how do you change starter where is it located what is estimated time thanks?

The starter is a cylindrical unit alongside the transmission. If I remember correctly there are three bolts holding this thing on, in an incredibly poorly designed assembly. You will need a flexible socket-wrench extension to get the top bolt out, and you can pretty much forget about putting it back in when you're done. I don't think even a dealer reinstalls this bolt; it is long gone on my car.

Bolt tension is stated in the Chilton's manual at 15-19 pounds.

That's all I have for ya.

How do you remove a starter from a mercruiser 3.0 liter 4 cylinder inboard motor?

Remove power connections from battery. Remove the wires to the starter. There are 2 bolts, one short, one long, that go from under the starter upwards. Remove these 2 bolts, loosing them each a bit at a time and holding the starter up to keep the turning easy. It is all basically a 'no-see' job, have to go by feel.

How do you change the starter on a 1997 izuzu trooper?

AnswerI have a 1996 limited trooper and it doesn't look like you can change it without removing the exhaust manifold....I had it unbolted and couldn't find a path to remove it.....someone please help if you can answer....Thanks Answer Remove 4 bolts on front crossmember, remove it and starter is a r/r job redisuzutoo. You do have to take off the exhaust at the exhaust manifold. You also have to unbolt the Y pipe so that it is able to move slightly towards the back of the wheel well. Anyways after that the starter slides right out. My problem is after I pulled my starter out, a hose fell off and it runs to the drivers side door. Into a canister. I don't think its the fuel pump, but I don't know what it is. And I can't find out where it goes under the car. Its a hose that when you are looking at the starter from the bottom it sits under the starter, next to the bundle of wires that is under the starter. If someone could look at their trooper and see where this hose goes. It attatches to a metal tube and I can't see where it ends above the oil pan nor can I feel. Or if someone could direct me to a diagram for this side of the car that would be appreciated.

AnswerYou do not need to unbolt the exhaust. I did this repair a couple of months ago on 1996 Trooper S.

0. Call around and check prices; they varied considerably in my area. You should be able to find a remanufactured starter w/ warranty <$150.00.

1. Jack up front of car and safely support on stands; you'll need the elbow room.

2. Disconnect negative wire from battery.

3. Remove heat shield beneath starter (2 or 3 small bolts)(Starter is on Driver's side, wire terminals are on the front)

4. Disconnect wire terminals at front of starter.

5. Remove 2 bolts holding starter to engine block. They are hard to see; you'll need a decent light. They are in a line, perpendicular to the length of the vehicle at the back of the starter. You'll need an extention or two for your socket, and a universal swivel is helpful.

6. Rotate starter 180 degrees so that wire terminals face rear of vehicle. There is just enough room to get it out. You may need to loosen one bracket on the heatshield on the exhaust pipe where you are removing the starter and rotate it out of the way.

7. Reverse the process to install; goes in easier than it comes out.

8. Took me about 1.5 hours, but I didn't have directions.

***********************************************************

There is an easier way. It is very tight to get it out that way. if you want to have the job done in half that time all you have to do is unbolt the drivers side of the front end. there are 2 bolts that go strait up. once removed it will drop the front end about 1-2 inches and the starter will come right out.

How do you take off and replace the starter on a 1998 Trooper?

The starter is located on the drivers side of the engine compartment, just inside the rear of the inner fender well. If you are looking to replace the starter it is not a fun job. I read that you have to drop the lead pipe. I took off the heat shield on the wiring harness by the lead pipe and the heat shield on the lead pipe. Then I took off the cross member. Finally I put my jack under the engine and rised it as far as I could. This allowed me to flip the starter and pull it out in reverse. I still found I had to wiggle it. I also shaved a little of my tranny housing of with a dremmel. This was a sucky job, but it worked.

How does one replace the ignition switch assembly on a 1995 Ford Escort without a key?

In order to remove the key ignition switch on Ford's, the ignition must be in the run position and the holding pin depressed. Without the key, a locksmith is your best bet. Keys can be generated by code, try-out keys, the ignition can be drilled and removed, or in worse case, can be forced to the run position. Trying any of these without knowing exactly what you are doing will likely result in damage to column.

Sorry it's probably not the answer you were looking for.

Best Regards

Most Fords require a key to remove the ignition lock cylinder to replace it. HOWEVER the 1995 ingnition assembly can be removed regardless of having a key or not. You have to remove the stering wheel, multifunction switch (can be unscrewed and pulled over steering hub and moved aside without cutting wire ties or disconecting). then remove 4 steering column bolts allow steering column to drop. On top of steering column there is a collar with two rivet looking fasteners holding the lock assembly to the column, these are actually screws. Use a dremel tool with a cutting disk to slot the tops of the screws to allow a standard screwdriver to be used. Out comes the entire assembly and can be replace for about $130 for a new assembly. You can also replace the lock cylinder for about $25, but you have to remove the two roll pins holding it in place, this requires drilling them out and it is a royal pain. I think they are hardened steel, or stainless either way they eat drill bits and time. With a new set up your door keys will be different from the ignition, but without an ignition key to begin with, I would assume you need to replace the door locks also, you can buy a set so at least all of the doors will use the same key.

Where is the starter on a 1998 Buick LeSabre?

Where is the starter relay on a olsmobile cutlass sierra?

AnswerMost GM cars anbd trucks locate the starter relay right on the startrer itself. GM calls it a solenoid.

Actually, there is a separate relay as well as the solenoid. This relay is in a fuse panel, either under the hood, or maybe even in the kick panel fuse panel.

If you can get to the starter, try this:

Turn the key to "on". With the car in PARK (double check this, it's important)

look into the starter area. You'll see a big cable and a small cable both coming to the starter. Use a screwdriver to short these two together, keeping your hands, arms and hair AWAY from the belts!

If the car turns over, starts acts like it's going to run, but quits as soon as you remove the screwdriver, you may have a bad relay. This relay not only allows the starting system to START the car, it also allows the ignition system to function.

That's why it starts and tries to run, the power is back feeding through the system and giving power to the ignition coil when you short the starter. As soon as you pull the screwdriver away, the ignition loses power, and the engine coasts to a stop.

I've seen the relays priced anywhere from 25 to 50 bucks, depending on where you get it.

Where does positive battery cable go to?

The positive battery cable goes to the starter, alternator, and electrical system. You need to consult the manufacturer for vehicle specifics.

How can you tell if your starter is going bad?

Usually it quits working outright or it works only every so many tries. However it can start dragging. A starter will draw a great deal of Amps when it is dying, Approx (300A) Mechanics have a simple gauge they lay on the cable that reads current (amps). Or just go to a parts dealer, they usually check this kind of stuff for free. . They can check your battery. And assuming your cables are good (the proper size) with all connections clean and tight it just may be the Starter. It is a process of elimination. If all else fails Replace the cheapest part first.

How to install a new starter in a Chevy 1975 with a 305 engine?

I just installed a strter in my 1975 Ford F-100, 400 V8. I am a novice mechanic and I was able to do the job with little trouble. Just remove the wire and remove the mounting bolts(on mine there were only 2 and they were obvious).

The starter slides out and the install is just as simple. My only issue was clearance on the back bolt. I just had to use very short strokes on the ratchet.

Good Luck.

but a chevy and ford not the same ford bolts to the bell housing. chevy bolts to the block. chevy has wires to the starter. ford goes to the fender well.

What should you do when the ignition is locked and you are unable to turn the key on a 1997 Nissan Altima?

You might try to jiggle the steering wheel a little, press the brakes while you try to start, and make sure your car is in park.

How do you replace ignition switch on 2001 Chrysler sebring convertible?

It's difficult to explain how, given the space on this board. You need several tools, patience, and some understanding before you tackle that project. It's best to visit your library and get the Chilton automotive book on that car, copy the page (you can't take the book with you most of the time), and try it. If you follow the steps, it's relatively easy. If you don't want to take on the project, get a friend that is learned in auto mechanics, OR, dare it say it? Go to a shop. Ugh! $75 an hour. You decide.

How do I locate and change the starter on a 91 S10 Blazer 4.3L?

ok on the s 10 blazer you wil first have to disconect the neg batt. cable from batt. then if you have a 4x4 you will have to remove the skid plate then the cross member. then the starter brace and shield if ya have one then you should see 2 bolts. clean wires that are attached to starter make note where they were. tape the ones that are one each post that go together then remove wires. then remove the 2 bolts tghat hold the starter to eng. note if you are going to all this trouble it would be a good idea to go ahead and replace the main wire to the starter.

make sure you have the starter tested before getting a new one i had the same trouble on my blazer i replaced every thing i could think of i had to have it towed to a shop and the found out it was the wiring harness that runs under the washer fulid tank it was bad they told me it was a bad design on the maker of the s 10

How long does it take to replace the starter on a 2002 Chevy Suburban?

1996

If it's not broke why fix it, however a 2002 starter would probably have been replaced at least three to fives times based on it's now 2007 soon will be 2008. The fact that most starters last usually a year or year and a half. If that does not answer your question it's might be best to reflect to your owners manual or car dealership for advice.

He was not asking how long until the old started would quit. he is trying to say that he starter is broken and wants to know the length of time that it would take to replace it.

The correct answer is..... that it would probably take you around a hour, if you know what you are doing and have the right tools.

Any help with the ignition key getting stuck on an '97 Blazer Cannot remove key when vehicle is turned off?

i had the same problem with my 97, ended up being the negative battery cable was loose. tightened it up and it worked fine afterwards

Answer yes it did work removing the cap and using screwdriver what i did was extened the legs on the cay reenserting cap so the button stays in and i can now freely remove the keySame thing happens to my 97 I fould out there is a "plunger" as part if the ignition. Under the steering wheel there is a small removable cap that you can take off and put a small screw driverf up into and press the plunger in and it will release the key. I think there is some electrical connection between the shift lever and the ignition. Mine has a floor shifter I am not shure if it is the same for a steering col set up good luck hope this helps

DW

AnswerI also have the same problem with my 97 Blazer with floor shift. I found the plug and inserted the small screwdriver and my key comes right out :-). Thanks...Now I just have to firgue out how to fix it so I do not have to do this all the time.

ANSWER

Small hose clamp around bottom of the plunger housing just under the plunger. Adjust as necessary. Key will come out no problem. Fixed my 97 Jimmy this way. Found the info on a Pontiac Grand Am site. I believe this problem really stems from the switch on the shifter though. I am now unable to get my key to turn away from the run position. Have to remove fuses to shut down vehicle.
