On the distributor cap, #1 position points toward the PASSENGER REAR of the car, and is probably also marked on the cap. #1 cylinder uses the SHORTEST spark plug wire. Then #3 distributor cap position points toward the PASSENGER FRONT of the car, and uses a longer spark plug wire. Then, going counter-clockwise, is #2 distributor cap position, then #4 dist. cap position.

You can try by vacuum- try to bring it to 20 Hg at idle, but a timing light is much more accurate

This is also the firing order of EVERY IN-LINE four cylinder engine.

The firing order of flat-four engines (Subaru, Volkswagen and Porsche) differ.

Timing marks are always on the crankshaft, usually on the pulley closest to the block. This is because the timing must be based upon the position of the number one piston, which is connected to the crankshaft.

Depends on which distributer cap you have. If it has separate wires just replace it. If the wires are part of the cap you replace the cap and all the wires. Not one of Toyota's better ideas. Runs $50-60.
