Windmills

Windmills are machines used to convert wind energy into other usable forms. They are commonly used for the pumping of water or milling of grains.

Where can you get plans to build a hammer mill for milling grain?

I have the same question. I've been looking for a small hammer mill for making mesquite bean flour. The only hammer mill that I've found for home/small farm use is the Novital, made in Italy, sold in Australia for $570 delivered. On the internet you can find Amy Smith's screenless hammer mill but I have yet to see a plan clear enough to make one myself; emails to Smith have not been responded to. I think her plan was a thesis at MIT so it might be possible through interlibrary loan to get the thesis. Also, on Ebay there is an offering of 25 patents for various kinds of mills--I've just sent for the package so can't say where it includes a plan for a small hammer mill.

If you run across any good plans, let me know. Good luck. Evan Blythin blythin@hotmail.com

How does a windmill charge a battery?

In order to produce electricity from any motion source (such as a windmill) you must have an electric generator to produce the power that charges the battery.

The windmill supplies the motion needed to turn the generator. The generator will produce power when the windmill is powered by enough wind to turn the generator.

The generator is connected to the battery and the power is stored by the battery. Usually, but not always, there is a regulator attached between the generator to shut the flow of electricity off when the battery has been sufficiently charged. This feature is used to prevent battery failure due to overcharging or at the very least extend battery life by optimizing the charge times.

The regulator may also detect battery drain and will turn on the current from the generator when the battery needs charging. (assuming the windmill is powered by wind and turning)

Batteries store and emit DC (direct current) and therefore usually get power directly from a generator. In some applications the windmill may generate AC (alternating current) by using an "alternator" (instead of a generator) to create power.

When that type of approach is used an additional electronic device called a "rectifier" is needed to convert the AC current to DC current in order to charge batteries -- which can only be charged by Direct Current.

How do you build a model windmill for a garden?

To be able to build a wind turbine generator (or windmill generator as its sometimes referred) you will need to obtain a good guide.

The guide should include, but not limited to-

  • Step by step video instructions
  • Plans explained in simple to follow English
  • Diagrams with captions
  • Information on components
  • Details of considerations before beginning and calculations used to determine size and suitability etc
  • Links to government and other governing bodies regarding grants/subsidies/tax relief
  • Contact information should you need any further assistance

All this and much more can be found at the following page

How do you sell firewood and make a good profit off of it?

I don't believe you will ever make a "good" profit out of selling firewood. But what you need to think of is 1. Do you have a reliable renewable source of wood that you have complete access to. 2. Is it close enough to your demand market to keep your distribution costs low. 3. Can you work 16 hours a day, 7 days a week for months at a time? 4. Are you mechanically adept in order to keep your down time due to mechanical failures at a minimum. (they will happen, take my word for it) 5. Are you honest? You will soon go out of business if you are not. 6. Can you afford the equipment needed to produce lots of firewood fast. Check out the internet for fast and efficient splitting machines. 7. What is the competition in your area. No sense starting up with 5 other sellers around you. Selling firewood is a very labor intensive business. There are so many hidden costs (fuel, insurance, etc) that have to be taken into consideration that I would not start until you have done a lot of research. One final note, with Craigslist giving away free wood, and many weekend beerdrinking money sellers (who offer their wood at 1/2 your cost), you best love what you are doing because you will get very frustrated if you do not. You will not get rich selling firewood.

What direction are faucets supposed to turn?

Answer

It depends on the manufacturer.

Answer

If they are "fluted" handles (uniform throughout their perimeter), they should both turn clockwise to shut off. If they are "wing" handles (a blade sticks out, somewhere on their perimeter), then the wings should push outward to turn off, and inward to turn on. In other words, the left handle turns clockwise to shut off, and the right handle turns counterclockwise to turn off.
