If you have a dying catalytic converter or O2 sensor, some codes could be thrown such as 'P042' but then clear themselves after some time passes and the problem is no longer detected.

Just had my Oil Changed at Bell Tire and now my trouble light comes on , Code p0014,P0017 and P0172. Could they have done something? It's a 4 Cyl Chevy 2010 Malibu? Thanks

Get the code, you can do it with a paper clip because its an OBD-I , just count the flashes the light makes to find out what code is stored. where does paper clip go count flashes were

There are at least 500 different trouble codes. You can't guess what's wrong. You have to have the trouble code read to find out. There's no single thing that will turn the light on.

You need an OBDII scanner tool. You can visit autozone and they will scan it for you for free but usually won't reset the light because they want to sell you the part that would shut off the light. It's most likely that it's the O2 sensor behind the catalytic converter. But it's worth the trouble to find out first. Harbor Freight tools has a scanner for about thirty dollars. A quality Actron scanner will run you about 80 but it's worth the extra money.

there could be a thousand different reasons. there is no way to tell or even guess with the iformation you have given.

Bank one are before the Cat and bank 2 are after the Cat.

There is one issue for this fault. The manifold runner control actuator needs replaced and this will solve the problem.

It can, if the cars computers have not had enough time to do all of their self diagnostics it will fail smog. They don't want you resetting the light on your way to the test.

you probably have obd codes that are coming up,,if you turn the key on and off 3 times and then leave on you will have codes come up,,,mine come up on my odometer reading,,they will show as po116,,,stuff like that,,,i found a web site that gives you discriptions of the codes and from there you will be able to tell what is wrong,,, you

Well With The Check Engine Light on It can Be many problems. If The Check Engine Light Blinks when you hit The gas and The car stutters makeing it feel like a tranny problem it might be a misfire. A misfire can be caused by spark plugs but most likey in the navigator it is a ingnition coil problem. 1st i would go to a repair shop and put it on the the computer to find out the trouble code for the check engine light and take it from there.

It could be that you have not tightened the cap on your gas tank. Be sure to check the gas cap and see if its being properly tightened. That was the case for me a couple of times.

if you check the engine codes, and get the variable speed sensor, o2 sensors, and the too much electric 1298, and fuse 15 blown, then it's probably the wiring harness c115, track down TSB 99-029

Take off negative battery cable for about 15 minutes after you have fixed the problem

Check your owners manual it will tell how to shut it off or if it doesnt tell you then a dealer service dept. has to do it

PENDING ON THE VHICLE, IT COULD BE AS SIMPLE AS A SENSOR BEING LEFT UNPLUGGED AT THE AIR CLEANER, OR A SENSOR GONE BAD, LOW OIL, CLOGGED AIR FILTER, AND OR THE CATALITIC CONVERTER CAN BE PLUGGED. IT CAN BE MANY THINGS AND I SUGGEST GETTING TH VEHICLE PLUGGED IN TO A COMPUTER. Autozone (and probably other auto stores) will read the code(s) for free. Saves going to the dealer and paying $30...

Without pulling codes, I would quess the Oxygen sensor is weak and needs replacing.

you must use an ODB-2 code reader/ code eraser. You first should read the code or codes and write them down. These tell you what is wrong with the car. (such as code p0401, which is the common air pump failure code)You can get a cheapo reader/clearer at harbor freight for about $25 or a decent one for about $75-100.
