How do you change the spark plugs on a 1996-2002 Rav4?

Answer
Replacing the spark plugs on the Rav4 is a bit harder then on many other vehicles. You start by removing the air filter holder. I have been able to get by removing only the front half of the air filter holder. Once this is done there are 4 holders in the center of the valve cover. Each has a 10 mm screw holding them in. Remove the screws and then pull the plug connectors out of the holes. The spark plugs take a 5/8" spark plug socket to remove them. You will also need a fairly long extension to reach the plugs. I prefer a 6" extension and a swivel head ratchet. If you find oil in the holes that indicates the seal for the valve cover wasn't installed properly. Normally you will have to replace the gasket to stop the leak. This isn't something for the non-mechanically minded people. I have found the spark plugs sold by Toyota are rated to last about 90k miles. They generally also will give you about 1 to 2 miles per gallon better mileage than the auto parts store's version. The auto part store version normally only last 30k. When replacing the screws to hold the holders, don't over tighten them. They can crack and then you will have to replact them. They aren't very cheap. Also start the bolts by hand to make sure you don't cross thread them. They are steel screws and are going into Alum. I hope this helps a bit.

UPDATE: 1998 Rav4/4dr/4wd If you do the above steps you will want to hunt down the person that wrote it and kill them. :)

The spark plugs are located on the top of the engine block, under 4 square rubber covers that have wires running to them from the right side of the engine block. You do have to pull pretty hard to pull up the rubber stopper and it has a long black tube that is attached to the bottom. PLEASE use a 6" or longer socket extension, but if you use one with a rubber 'helper' inside you may have to have a realllllllly good connection or it will make it very hard to get the socket back out after you tighten up the plug. I used a socket with the rubber 'grabber' inside to unscrew them.. and one without to screw them back in. Just a hint.

If you want a picture of what it looks like after you remove the 4 rubber plugs and the tubes attached look at this: http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m39/dz63/96%20Camry%2022L%20Auto%205S-FE%20Timing%20Belt/Step5-removingthesparkplugs.jpg

Where is the transmission dipstick located on a 1998 Chevy Cavalier z24?

If it is a standard, it's down on the back side of the engine. if you stand in front of the car open the hood. on the right side below the brake fluid reservoir you will see a small white stick . Lift it and pull it up. It's hard to reach and may be dirty as well; try to wipe of any excess dirt before you pull it. To top it up you need a funnel and a hose and some GM synchromesh fluid.

What will make a Chevy Cavalier's blinker lights and back up lights go out even when you change the fuse?

I don't completely understand the question, but as I do, you are asking why the lights do not work even after you have replaced the fuse. A common denominator is the ground system in the back of the vehicle. We are assuming that this car hasn't been in a wreck whereas the fuse keeps blowing because of a short somewhere. Take a test light and connect it to the negative side of the battery (negative ground)then probe the leads at the lights and see if the test light comes on. If it does, then you need te try and determine where the ground wire problem is, or if it was me, I would just attach another wire somewhere on the chassis and connect it to the common ground wire for the rear lights.

How do you install alternator on 2002 Chevy cavalier z24?

First remove battery cable. Remove drive belt with (13mm) or (15mm) I cant remember which wrench on belt tentioner, pulling towards front of car. Then 15mm bolt on the bottom of altenator. Then 15mm long bolt between chain housing and plastic intake. Then a few inches to the right just loosen the 3rd bolt. Its a tight squeeze, but work it out so you can unplug it and remove the 13mm nut on the back.(that wire goes to the battery)

Timing belt broke on my 2000 2.4L galant. Fixed it and now there is lots of vibration in my motor what can it be?

The Balance shaft Belt (behind the timing belt) could be out of position... It is important to note that when you release the hydraulic tensioner that sometimes the marks on the cam, oil pump gear or crank may move, the balance shaft should stay in position. While you had the timing belt off you should've also replaced the balance shaft belt, Crank angle sensor, a nd probably the water pump, since you have all parts off necessary for those replacements. It is also important to note that the crank angle sensor plate is in front of the balance shaft belt but doesn't need to be removed-you can just turn the crank to work it behind the open spacing between blades. Also note that if a belt has broken then the blade could be bent. It shouldn't have to be replaced only straighened unless it's "wavy" the blade should be adjusted close enough to the Crank angle sensor so that it picks up when you rotate the blade past it ( you should hear the magnet "click") Also note that the tolerance is extremely tight between the belts such that it can't be adjusted too far forward or back without hitting either belt. Be careful not to "cut" the balance shaft belt when rotating the crank working it behind.

There are alot of people posting about close tolerance heads and impedance valves. Only up to 1997 had those heads if you have heads that were manufactured after 1997 you are fine the heads and valves will be fine if the timing belt breaks. If you have a 1996 or 1997 Mitsubishi 2.4L engine just part out the vehicle. You can get more for a couple fenders and doors than the car will bring at the scrap yard. So help someone like yourself out and list parts on craigslist. Pre 1997 Mitsubishi 2.4 engines were terrible for destroying the heads after that you are good so your 2000 Mitsubishi Galant 2.4 L engine will be fine and no head damage.

You should however note that if you disconnect your battery Your 2000 Mitsubishi Galant will lose its marriage to your "Chip" Key... that is it will lose it's programming so be prepared to either spend $300 at a dealer or $100-$200 from a locksmith to reprogram your car to re-marry your key. Everyone says to disconnect battery but please don't or at least put a cigarette charger/backup in anytime you remove the battery. Otherwise this car will think it has been stolen and not respond to the key... The engine will turn over but will not fire, the security system has been enabled.
