Electric Windows

The first electric windows were introduced in 1940 as an alternative to the hand-turned windows. These car windows can be lowered and raised by pressing a switch or button. Electric windows are designed for convenience and safety.

Why won't window go up and down correctly when new regulator is put on window?

Malfunctioning Automotive WindowsWithout doing a "hands on troubleshooting" of your vehicle, no one can be sure of the specific cause of this problem.

Usually, this problem is caused by misalignment of the various parts in the window regulator and/or guide track assemblies.

Another possibility, if the vehicle has electric windows is that some component in the electrical system is maladjusted, or defective.

How much does it cost to fix your 96 Honda civic power window?

A 1996 Honda Civic power window regulator and motor assembly can range from a budget part of 36 to 235 $USD (+ shipping and handling) for a premium unit through online sellers at wholesale cost. Labor for this install should be no longer than 1-hour, and Honda dealer rates can be around 100$/hr. Labor rates will vary by shop and unless you supply your own part their prices will likely be double the wholesale quote above.

How do you fix power windows that won't roll up in a 1997 Mercury Mystique the motor works the fuses are good and brand new switch and they still won't go up or down they just will not move at all?

I don't know if this will help but I had to replace both (left and right)front door window regulators in my 1998 Mystique. The movement cable assemblys on the regulators seem to be poorly designed and the constant up and down motion of the windows weekens the point of attachment of the cable. I would suggest removing the door panel on the window (or windows) that is giving you the trouble and looking at the point where the cable attaches to the assembly and notice if they are damaged. If so you may need to replace the regulator. Only remove the vapor barrier partly neerest the door latching side not the hinge side. This will give you access to view the regulator. Don't know what else may be the problems if the regulators and motors are OK. Good Luck, it is a very poor design in my opinion. when you remove the inner door trim panel, you have to be careful not to rip the wires off the window switches, unplug the wires leading to these switches...then look in side the white plug, its normally the biggest harness of the two, check to see if the wires are crimped.. normally the will loosen over time, if its loos use a scribe to gently push the contacts together....re-install and try.....good luck! I had a similar problem in 2005. The problem turned out to be BAD Connections on the Drivers Side Window Control Module. (as an EE, I always troubleshoot by checking for loose and/or corroded connections on anything, first) I had to remove the Module to re-tension all of the Female Contacts by using a very sharp pointed tool to gently push each side of every contact closer together (the problem is due to metal fatigue). I also spayed tuner cleaner on all of the Female Contacts, to clean off any corrosion. This appears to be a temporary fix, as, about a year later, I had to do it all again. I hope that this was helpful.

What would common problems be to check for a 1999 F150 electric passenger window that sticks in upright position and clicks but works sometimes?

If it is "clicking" then it only leaves two things. Either the switch is bad or the motor. If you bypass the switch with jumper wires from a battery you can rule out the motor. Switch polarity to reverse direction. If that works then it is the switch. Hope that helps.

Where is the circuit breaker for power windows on a 1998 olds 88?

My olds 88 has a fuse for the power windows. I don't think it has a circuit breaker. The fuse box for mine on the lower dash panel just above my left knee. There are mostly "blade type" fuses but there are also two silver can type fuses and one of these two is for the power windows. ( I think the other one if for the power seats)

How do you replace window regulator in 2003 Chevy trailblazer rear passenger side?

To remove the regulator unit: 1. Pry off the small rectangular screw cover inside the door pull and remove two screws. Pry off the door handle trim and the window switch trim. The door panel is pried off with a stiff putty knife or similar tool. Remove the door panel. 2. Pull off the black rubber insulation. It is held on with a gooey rubber adhesive. 3. Place the window in the closed position and use masking tape to hold it in place. Loosen the two 10mm nuts on the window attachment clamps. Use a 10mm deep socket inserted through two 1" diameter access holes in the door frame. 4. Unplug the power wire from the motor and unhook the clips holding the regulator cable housings in place. Remove the three black screws and peel off the speaker to gain access to the lower screw attaching the regulator. (Don't poke a hole in the speaker foam cover). 5. Remove the three 10mm screws attaching the regulator to the door frame. The regulator should be loose now. Turn it slightly and remove it from the door. 6. I haven't replaced the unit yet, but the installation should be the reverse process. I'm sure some window adjustment will be necessary using the window clamps.

How do you repair power windows?

First check fuse. Then check switch by test light with power on this will mean if there is power to the swtch if not check wiring. if there is power in the wire. then replace switch. Then check wires. By volt meter. If wire damage repair or re place wire.

A common problem with a Lincoln Towne Car is the gear inside the power window motor fails. The sound that it normally makes when this problem exists is "Zoom, Zoom, Zoom, etc." when the switch is used in both directions. The gear will need to be replaced.

Check the wire harness for cracks in between the door opening, with time it brakes from closing/opening doors

Pour rubbing alcohol on the switch. It cleans the shumtz out and sometimes works.

Nervous about using rubbing alcohol? Try some contact cleaner (check Radio Shack). It won't fog styrene plastics like alcohol will.

With the key -off- (no power), spray the cleaner into the switch (careful of splashing in the eyes) and work the switch a bunch of times.

For the shade tree mechanic there is a heat sensitive circuit breaker in the motor that fails more often than the motor. Jump it out and put an external self resetting 10a breaker in the motor line

A method that somtimes works when you have a bad conecction is slamming the door. It is useful for when you need to close the window eg so people cannot break into your car. Not exactly a long term solution though.

What can be done to repair an 2000 Olds Alero dashboard cover that has begun to roll up and crinkle?

It depends on how bad it is. I would take it to an auto trim shop and get an estimate. If it is too bad the dash may have to be replaced which is a BIG job.

AnswerBesides checking with an upholsterer as mentioned above, Here are some other options available to you - from least costly to most costly:
  1. 1 You can purchase a soft dash cover to cover the dash. They cost between $20 and $50 depending on the type. They are molded to fit the dash and have cutouts to go around the vents and airbag. They get attached with velcro and are removable.
  1. 2 They also sell hard shell dash overalys that you permanently affix with epoxy over top of the old dash. They are molded to fit exaclty over the existing dash and have cutouts for the vents, flasher button and air bag. They come colored to match (brown color that they call dark grey). You can also get it painted any color you wish (at an extra cost). The dealer is on E-bay and the cost of the dash shell is around $125-$150. With this installation you will notice a transition where the new dash ends and the old one continues but it is more affordable and easier than a dash replacement (below).
  1. 3 Replace the dash. You can find them at junk yards and online dealers. Costs vary from $225-$500. Junk yards could and should be less. YOu may be able find a real good deal from yards because there are alot of Alero's in yards nowadays. I foind a whole set of cloth seats (both fronts and rear) in great condition for $200 from a yard. This may be an option to look into. The problem with a dash replacement is the work involved (alot of elecrical stuff to deal with).

What should you check first if the left rear or right rear power window on a 99 Grande Cherokee Laredo will no longer go down?

The wiring harness that goes from the dashboard to the driver side door is the culprit most of the time. If you pull the rubber boot back, you will most likely find one or more of the wires in the harness has failed (broken or gotten cut).

AnswerThe child security lock got hit. Its on the back side of the door near the locking mechenism where if it is closed you cant get to it just flip it back. AnswerReplace the window switch(es). AnswerI'd check the window fuse in the fuse box, the wire connection itself for physical obstructions (ice, dirt or other debris) and finally the window motor. AnswerJust did my right rear on a 99 JGC. It needed lubrication.

The window was stuck so that the motor could not turn. I suspect a weak motor so as not to cut peoples apendages off, but after a few years the track becomes dry and not condusive to passage of the window.

To cure I removed the mechanism inside the door (7 screws), and lubed using white lithium and silicon to grease the track , track arm to hold the window and the pulley mechanism which uses a wire and pully to move the window.

Once it was well lubed I placed it back in and she ran like greased lightning !

Good luck

Its usually the window switch i just had that same problem on my 1996 jeep i replaced the switch and it worked fine.

How do i fix Power window problem 1996 camaro?

You need to troubleshoot the problem---isolate what the cause is before you can fix the "problem." On a quiet street, turn your ignition on (no engine nor radio running is best.) and try to operate the window. Do you hear any noises? None, check power to unit. Grinding, check to make sure the motor gears and the window regulator are aligned. Some "whining sound, maybe a frozen motor or stripped gears.

If no action or noise, it could be something as simple as a blown fuse or a broken switch or as difficult as a blown motor. You can troubleshoot further by using a circuit tester or multimeter.

How do you fix a driver's side window that has slipped off the track and how do you get the manual window crank off?

the window handle is held on with a c shaped ring that is placed on the handle then pushed onto a splined rod with a recess in it to hold it on there is a tool for this but usually it can be pushed off the handle with a screw driver placed between the door panel and the handle the hard part is seeing it to push on one or both ends of the "c" ring to reinstall you simply put it on first then push it in as for the window falling off you won't know what caused it till you get a look at it

The power window in the front of a Buick Century are not working is there a way to get this window up?

Sometimes you can jar the brushes to make contact on the motors for ONLY ONE TIME. Hit the inside of the door about 6 inches from the bottom about equedistant from the front and rear with your fist pretty hard. Try this a couple of times and it may work. If not you have to get inside the door.

You can also use a small 12 volt battery like a lawnmorer or motorcycle battery You hook up some wires to the battery terminals .Remove the switch and on the inside you will see some contact points where the wires are hooked up. Just touch the wires from the battery and presto the window will go up or down you just have to see which contacts move the window in which direction. This works like a charm
