On my 2000 ford windstar how do you know when to add oil?

1 critical factor to consider when to add oil: when the level is low.

The natural follow-up question is: How do I know when the level is low?

  • When the oil warning light is lit up on the dash - which means your engine has already been low on oil for way too long, and is likely to be 2 quarts, or 40% below recommended capacity(!)

  • When YOU check it. Yes, this is our responsibility as the owner to check the oil levels - suggested at about every time we gas up. BUT, this is only if we want our engines to last as long as possible.
The procedure is quick and easy, and well detailed & illustrated in the Owners Manual
But when should the oil be changed?
  • Under "normal" driving conditions, the oil change interval is 5,000 miles. That would cover most of us. The maintenance schedule and Owners Manual will define "normal" vs "severe" driving conditions.

  • For those who don't put many miles on the vehicle, it is then recommended at 6 months.
Oil is the life-blood of the engine. Neglect it and you can be sure to be having to repair it.

That's my sermon for the day, now go forth and happy motoring...

How do you replace the voltage regulator in a 1988 240 Volvo?

The regulator is internal to the alternator! Just replace the alt.

The alternator has an internal regulator that can be replaced by itself; however, when there is an issue with the alternator, it often involves diodes in alternator instead of or in addition to the regulator.

better repair shops will often take an alternator to an automotive electrical repair shop for same-day rebuilds, with the value much higher than a cheap rebuild in a chain parts shop, and hundreds less than a dealer replacement. You want Bosch or your own Bosch rebuilt

Why is your PCV valve hose leaking oil at the pcv side and the mass air flow side on a 2000 ford windstar?

That sounds pretty nasty... The secondary air system sounds pretty plugged up.

I've assembled a number of related questions that could be related to this symptom.

Check out the about a rough idle / codes 171 & 174 on a Windstar. This is about a TSB isssued by Ford and the Windstar Intake manifold "isolator bolts", AND a change in the valve cover design that causes lots of oil in the wrong places. Strikes me as something to be seriously looked into for your vehicle.

How do you fix the arm rest on a 1992 Cadillac Deville?

Get a whole new door panel lol I know it sucks

It is NOT necessary to get a whole new door panel, but replacing the armrest is recommended over repair. If you remove the door panel you will see that the armrest is attached to the door panel by several 8mm screws from behind. Check "Hemmings Motor News" for vendors.

What would cause a 98 Pontiac sunfire to overheat if the water pump thermostat and temperature sensor have been replaced and it still overheats?

Check to see if fan turns on when the temperature reaches 3/4 of the way it should stay over half and between three quarters to the red line fan might be shout or relay.

PS brown foam only indicates mosture in the block common on most vehicles. two if it was a head gasket crack between water jacket and oil. Oil would go into the collent and radiat into the over flow bottle now if it is cracked into the cylinder easy check is remove radiator cap and have someone crank the motor over should have collant spraying out of the radiator due to compression

AnswerCould be the head gasket check your oil to see if it has water mixed in with it Answermight need to flush radiator, is thermostat in correctly?

By correctly, I think it might be one of those where it's possible to put the stat in backwards.I agree blocked radiator (first thought, actually) now agree head gasket likely suspect.Take your oil filler cap off and see if it's all gunked up with a brown foam.Phil

Why does the gas gauge on a 99 Alero suddenly drop to Empty even though the tank is completely full How do you rectify the situation?

My 2000 GLS does the same thing. When I fill it it reads full for a few moments then goes to straight to empty. If I am going down the road I can shift into neutral shut the motor off and restart but the gauge does the exact same thing again. I was told it was the sending unit but have not fixed it yet. The guage works fine after some driving and the needle comes off full.

How do you turn off the interior lights with the doors off a jeep?

I bought what is called an "Add A Circuit" fuse link. This thing has two slots for 10 amp fuses and plugs into the "Door Sw Defeat" fuse slot. It also has a wire coming off it to add another line to it. What I did was pull the 10 amp fuse out, plugged in the Add A Circuit and plugged the fuse into the second opening of the new dual fuse holder. Then I installed a toggle switch under the dash near accessible only when the glove box is open. From the toggle switch, I connected a ground wire to it, grounded that to an existing metal screw, and the other wire connected to the wire coming from the dual fuse holder. Flipped the switch and the light turns off. The total cost was, $1.19 for the toggle switch and about 5 bucks for the Add A Circuit connector. Piece of cake! Good luck! Timing chain cover gasket on a 96 Ford Wind star?

Answer to replace timing cover gasketIt's a big job, shops charge well over a thousand dollars to do it. The original gaskets were poor, and fail a lot. Ford has a much improved replacement, it costs about 15 bucks! The crankshaft pulley and harmonic balancer must come off, then you have to remove the front section of the exhaust system and the oil pan. From above, remove the alternator, power steering pump and water pump. On the 3.8 engine you have to remove the camshaft position sensor, but mark the position of the sensor body, and also the vane inside - if you put it back wrong the engine will run, but badly. Then you have to jack up the passenger side of the engine in order to remove the timing cover. You have to undo all the bolts and studs and lift them out with the cover, mark the position of the bolts and studs because they are all different lengths. Do NOT miss the small machine screw with the Allen head just below the oil pump, it will probably be hidden behind a gob of greasy dirt - if you try to remove the cover with this screw still in place you will crack the cover! A new one is about $150 on line!

Carefully remove all the old gasket material, fit the new gasket, and reverse the above. Good luck!

Edit: Hi, I'm just gonna touch on a few notes here. First off, this is not a job for a "think i can do it" do it yoursefler. It requires a few special tools. 1: power steering pulley press tools. it is a press on pulley. 2: crank shaft pulley press tool, 3: (optional) stud extractor set with 1/4 stud extractor, this makes getting the timing chain cover off with very little to no lifting of the engine (note: you will need to remove nut from front pass motor mount to frame and lift motor up to remove water pump, IT WILL NOT CLEAR UNLESS IT IS LIFTED 3") Normal tools are as follows. 1: 1/2" drive socket set range from 13mm-21mm, 3", 6", 12", 1/2" drive extensions, some of which you may not use. 1/4" drive socket set range from 4.5mm-13mm, one 3" extension. set of 6 point box end wrenches range from 8mm-15mm, pair of pliers, dead blow or normal hammer, rubber mallet, few pry bars, penetrating oil, and alot of patience...

Also Note: water pump may hang/ stick to timing cover studs. DO NOT PRY HARD. pay attention and see if pump tries to slide off the studs. you will clearly see the stud that are making it stay on. at this point is were you would use the stud extractor set. be very careful not to break the stud off in the engine block. this will also free the pump from stud and remove pump. same note with timing chain cover. if stud making cover stick find the troublesome stud and remove it. i would remove all studs if the first two came out easily. i know the studs will not come completely out so just let them chill in the timing cover for now till its time to remove it. if i have left anything out please feel free to update further.

How do you set the timing on a 1988 s10 blazer 4.3 liter?

Put it in drive?! Not recommended for the solo mechanic. Do not try this at home.

The wire that you're looking for can be found by pulling back the top of the passengers carpet. It's a single wire connector coming out of the main harness that goes to the ecm. Again, behind the top of the carpet and against the firewall. Can't be missed.

Answeri have the same question. but i know that the number 1 cylinder should fire at top dead center. but before you can set the timing you have to disconnect the electronic ignition wire. its a tan wire with a black stripe. after you disconnect that. you put the car in drive and move the distributer back and forth till it fires at TDC.

the only problem is that i cant find that tan and black wire. mitchell on demand says that it is near the distributer. but i cant find the damn thing. hope you have better luck than i did. i just did it by sound.

How do you change or replace the dashboard light bulb in a 1996 Ford Windstar GL?

You have to pull All the facia off the dash (radio surround as well) - this includes the knee board and the upper vent piece. Pull out the headlight knob plastic and then you will see 4 screws that hold the dash cluster in place. You need to undo the speedometer cable and the 2 wire harnesses that are on the left and right upper sides of the cluster - then pull out to replace the bulb.

Are there any electrical or fuel problems on a '92 Geo Tracker that would make it randomly stall and then immediately restart?

I've had this happen to my Tracker, as well as a friend's. In both cases it turned out to be either the Crank Angle Sensor, or the wiring going to it. Let me ask you, when it randomly dies does the RPM gauge jump all around or temporarily go to zero? If so, it's certainly a CAS issue. Mine spent 6 months in a garage with a mechanic working on it nonstop. They basically have no idea what they're doing, and anything they can't immediately explain gets chalked up as "Bad ECU." Don't listen to them. I had to replace 3/4 of the parts on that vehicle before the mechanic gave it back to me, still not working. All it took was shorting the diagnostic pin block (4 pin connector, right by the battery) and getting the code out of the computer. The computer gave a Code 42, which is CAS, so I checked that circuit. It's been running fine ever since.

I have had it happening to mine too. Eventually it would not restart. First fix replaced some corroded wires at the gas tank end of the system. Now after another recurrence, the shop is getting no signal from the computer. Bummer, cuz that is spendy to replace. I guess hairline cracks develop in the circuit board with age. It must flex just a little, maybe with temp changes, so circuits open and close until it fails.

An from "91tracker":I found a problem on it that made a huge difference. I found a broken ground that made my tracker run VERY rough so i spliced a new eye back on it and it doesnt drop to 500rpms and die on me anymore, and now when my temp. go to operating temp. and i shut it off it will start for me unlike when it had the broken ground.so you can check for broken grounds like mine or try tuning the timing.

Left end of the instrument panel. Open the drivers door, look about armrest height for the fuse panel cover. Removing fuse number 34 should disable the lights. You'll have to see if you can live with whatever else may loose power.

Why won't a 2000 Chevy Blazer 4x4 go into fourwheel drive and the indicator light only blinks?

Find the vacume line that goes from the transfer case up over the top of the the transmission into the engine compartment on the passenger side in the front and replace it, re-route it through the wheel well as all of them rub on a sharp edge and get a whole in them.(you can actually hear the leak). If that does not do it then replaced the 4x4 transfer switch under the transfer case. Very common problem, they often go bad. I have owned 3 of them and had to do the same thing to all 3. Thanks

I had this similar problem, and i went w/o 4x4 for a year because i thought it was an expensive part. I really wish this was the first thread i read, i went and popped the hood and there it was, the vacuum hose just laying there disconnected from the plug, i plugged it back in and the problem was fixed, thank you very much for the information, it was extremely helpful.

Peugeot 306. Intermittent fuel gauge even when full. Electrics checked. OK Any ideas?

Your in tank "sending unit" is most likely bad.

The sender unit is under the rear seat and easy to remove, 6" black plug in floor needs prising out. It is the right hand of 2 black plugs in the floor the left one is the pump. The unit is held in by a threaded plastic cap it may need a hammaer and blunt screw driver or piece of wood to start it turning. I have a problem where the gauge reads low all the time, thought it was because the float arm is stiff but looked at 3 in a scrap yard and they are all stiff. Would be interested to hear if yours turns out to be the same. The low fuel gauge reading was down to lack of experience with this 306. A 60litre tank gave unexpected reults when filling with 30 of petrol expecting it to be full when compared with previous car.

I have the same problem and I'm pretty much certain that the cause is the same, a stiff float arm. I usually drive with a short fuel level and I guess that's the main reason for the issue. The fuel gauge is working perfectly but the pointer is not able to go behond the first reading mark and the reserve LED is always ON.
