On the 1996 Taurus it is located in the CCRM which is not serviceable you will need a new one from the auto parts store or from a junk yard. They average 150 at auto zone. The ccrm is right next to the battery its a little box that plugs in.

Check your coolant level again to see if the level has gone down. If it has check your engine oil level to see if it is above the normal full line. If it is this might mean you have a bad head gasket. I had a 92 grand prix that was not over heating but i was losing coolant, bad head gasket.

Evidently you are loosing vacuum to the blend doors. Look under the hood at the rear of the engine. Check all of the vacuum hoses to see if any are off or broken

Radiator may be plugged or air flow restricted may have to be boiled out or replaced

Another possibility might be that you have a blown head gasket. Perform a engine compression test to rule this possibility out. A lack of freon would have nothing to do with the engine overheating, as it's part of the air conditioning system not the cooling system. The only thing would happen if your air compressor didn't have sufficient freon would be it would lock-up, and the belt (which is part of the water pump) would eventually tear in half.

You probably have malfunctioning blower fans. A blown fuse can cause your blower fans to malfunction. The heat and air conditioning cooling is not being forced into the passenger cabin.

On the late 90's early 2000 Chrysler vans the radiator or cooling fan relay is a common item to fail and costs anywhere from 40-60 dollars at a parts store. The symptom you notice first is typically and overheating problem. Don't assume it is just a coolant level problem, because the water might have boiled out before you realized what was happening. If the relay has failed the fans will not work thus not cooling the engine. You can diagnose by simply visually checking if the fans turn on or not. The relay is the most common (and easiest to fix) reason for fan failure. The relay is typically located below the air duct on the front driver side screwed to the radiator brace/frame about 18-20 inches (About the length from elbow to finger tips) off of the ground. It is near the end of the radiator hanging vertical with the face of the relay aiming toward the passenger side of the van. It is about the size of a large processor chip or a saltine cracker (for the non computer savvy) with one cable plugged into it. You will likely have to remove the battery (maybe even the battery plate), unscrew the air vent and move it out of the way to make room to reach it from above. If you are dexterous you may be able to reach the relay from underneath the van. It has two small (try 9mm first) screws holding it on. Once the relay is loose it should be able to be dropped down and reached from below. Remove the relay from the cable by pushing the red lock sideways and then pressing down on the black tab before pulling it out with some medium pressure. The new relay attaches easily by pressing into the cable connector and then sliding the red lock back in place. Replace all of the removed items (the van won't start without the battery) and then check the relay by running the van and making sure the fans start working (It may take several minutes for the van to heat up enough the kick the fans on).

Some small cooling systems can be quickly overcome by cold air rushing thru an open grill; This is why you will sometimes see 'winterfronts' on some vehicles. Even cardboard in front of the grill will help.Make sure your radiator is full; even if it is a little low it will make a huge difference in it's ability to maintain heat as cold air rushes thru it. After 35 years of owning my own auto repair shop my experience has been that the most common reason for antifreeze in the oil is a bad intake manifold gasket....Bad head gaskets commonly cause overheating or antifreeze getting into a cylinder and causing a rough running engine and white smoke coming out of the tailpipe.

There are other reasons so it would be best to let someone who knows their way around auto air conditioners check it. As a novice mechanic 40 years ago I almost broke my hand taking apart a compressor that I thought was without any freon.
