Locks and Latches

I've had to open a few when people lose their keys. Generally it is a 3 or 5 lever lock and by checking the workings on another-that's it the one you keep in the back of the van- you can sort out where to drill through the door and lock to get access to the levers, which you can then hook up with a screwdriver.

Another way is to cut through the stile and just allow the door to open

you can if the body of the car has not bent by the pulling done by the door. you may have to realign the doors.

A few weeks ago my left back tire blew out on the highway and tread slapped my wheel weld - from then on my left sliding door wouldnt open - it would unlatch but not go back. this was due to the interlock that keeps the door from opening if your feul door is open. i reached up under the partial mudflap closest to the door and found the module. Its white plastic about 2 or 3 inches big connected to a cable - cant miss it - it has a large black switch about 1 inch long and half an inch wide - i simply pressed this black switch til it clicked and released the door. opened fine. until i closed it and tried again. the switch had engaged. I have no way of lifting my van as a single mother of two toddlers - a real fix is out of the question rght now. So I used good ol duck tape and taped that switch down. Works like a charm now :)

if you have power locks it could be the power lock module or the power lock itself located in the door. I use to own a 2000 Passat wagon and while most of the doors would lock and unlock with the door switch and fob, the left rear door quit working. A used lock assembly cost me 40 bucks but was given to the new owner when I sold the car because of the sludged up engine.

Try checking the latching assembly on the door. If it snaps shut before the door colses, it keeps the door from closing. With the door open, look at the assembly while pulling the door handle to open. Use a screw driver and snap the latch that holds the door shut down. It should pop back and reset.

Worn out door hinge pins and bushings lead to poor alignment and damage to latch and striker pin.

The 1979 Chevy Silverado glove box latch is held in place with two retaining screws. Remove the retaining screws and the glove box latch will come off.

you have to roll the window down and opend it from the inside. You are not supposed to opend it with the window up because it could break.

if you are unable to pop the hood from the latch inside the car, just look in the center of the front of your car for the small wire that is connected to the latch itself. stick your hand through the front grill and pull it down. it should be slightly to the right and a bit down from the center of your hood.

I would say that if you are having this problem most likely the latch has been slightly bent in or out, or the vehicle has been wrecked in the past. Also, the alignment of the trunk could be off. (wrecked) But a trunk latch can get damaged from slamming it over and over. Also, if it is a used car, you never know what has been done to the vehicle. Maybe someone locked their keys in the trunk and broke the latch in the past. Or, maybe someone broke into the car when it was previously owned and the latch has been replaced. You never know. People do strange things.

If you have locked your car keys in your car, you can use a wire coat hanger to unlock your car door by forcing it through the key hole.

Take the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) along with some ID (your license) to the dealership and they will make you a new key. No damage done this way.

Hi if the outside handle is not operating the internal lock, remove the internal panel from the top edge of door, panel pulls off along edge next to glass, pull back to gain access, use small vise grips and pull cable connected to door lock, door should open. If this is the case small nipple has pulled of the cable end, cure by crimping on new nipple, can be made,

Well, if you have a door that opens inward from the outside, then you should wedge some coins in the edge of the door, on the bottom on the door; So when you come back from school etc. you just take them out. Hopefully this works well for you as it worked for me

If you have an older Jetta the rear doors getting stuck is so common I would almost call it normal.

The fastest way to open the door is to get in to the back seat with a long flat blade screwdriver and a flashlight.

First step is to pull down on the weather strip along the edge closest to the latch.
Second step is to pull the seat back away from the door. Hold it back with one hand and aim your flashlight in the opening. You should be able to see the latch.

Last step is to take you screwdriver and depress the small tap looking thing on the latch while pushing your shoulder against the door. This will release the door.

I usually fix the latch myself. when you take it off the car you will notice that the return spring has broken. lubricate the latch after re bending or replacing broken spring.

I have an 84 Vette and had a similar problem. Get a needle nose pliers. If you able, grab a hold of the cable which is just behind the hood release handle, grasp on to it firmly and pull it, but to to hard. Have someone help you to open the hood at the same time if you need to. ...................Matt B.

You can't. You need a wire with a hook because the locking mechanism is on the other side of the window. and you don't pull up, you pull toward the front of the car, only if you can get a hold of the bar.

sounds like a bad door latch mechanism.

Call your MC dealer. I believe they have to do it for you.

On the driver side to the left, on the same side as the door under neath the console. It is the same color as the interior and looks like a handle

the locks in doors are the most neglected item for maintainace. try some lubricant spray on the lock mechanisms inside the doors and see if that fixes the problem

If you look by the gas tank release button, the hood release is right there, just on the corner.
