Where is the serpentine tension pulley on a Chevy Malibu?
I believe on the passenger side of the engine (the "front" of the engine since it's a front wheel drive, it's turned sideways in the engine compartment). On the newer (not newest, per se) model Malibu, the engine must be supported while the engine mount is removed or unbolted to replace the belt. Of course, if you are just doing the pulley, the belt can lay there until the new pulley is installed, and supporting the engine/removing th emount will not be necessary. Find the serpentine belt and it will be in contact with the tensioner pulley. Tensioners and idler pulleys are typically fairly simple to replace, and relatively inexpensive (parts at least) from what I've seen.
How does a compound pulley work?
A compound pulley, also known as a block and tackle, combines multiple pulleys to reduce the amount of force needed to lift a load. It consists of fixed and movable pulleys, where the load is attached to the movable pulley, and the fixed pulley is anchored in place. By pulling down on the rope, the force is distributed across multiple segments of the rope, allowing the user to lift heavier objects with less effort. This system effectively increases the mechanical advantage, making lifting easier and more efficient.

Is a BMW and rover 75 diesel crankshaft pulley the same?
Yes, i believe the rover 75CDT and CDTI diesel engine (called M47R) is the very same as the BMW E46 320 diesel engine (called M47). This BMW engine was also used in the BMW E39 520 diesel car

Belts have to make at least a 180° wrap around engine components. To do that, they sometimes have to place an "idler roller" under the component before they can route the belt to the next component. That idler roller doesn't power anything. It just keeps the belts wrapped properly around the preceding pulley. The roller has a bearing in it and sometimes that bearing wears out.

I HAD TO REPLACE MY SERPENTINE BELT BUT ENDED UP HAVING A MECHANIC DO IT FOR ME AND AT THE SAME TIME HE SAID THAT IT TOOK A SPECIAL TOOL TO REMOVE THE TENSION PULLY. THE TENSION SPRING ON THE PULLY HAD FROZEN.
Ive replaced both the tensioner pulley and tensioner assembly on my 90 Dynasty 3.3 there are no special tools required its a 15mm both for both the pulley and assembly, tho there is a bit of patience required as neither is very easy to get to but its not terribly diffcult

Releasing serpentine belt tension on a 1993 Chevrolet truck?
The idler pulley is near the top of the engine. Use a 15 MM (I think) socket on a long breaker bar, and turn the idler pulley arm so that the pulley moves away from the belt. You'll need to put the socket on the nut of the pulley, not on the arm itself. When the pulley is loose, you can pull the belt off. Some of the idler pulley arms have a square hole that accepts a 1/2 inch drive from a socket wrench breaker bar. But be careful. The serpentine belt routing is a little odd, and you'll want a picture to help you put it back. Make a drawing or take some pictures if you don't already have something from GM.
How do you know when you have a bad altenator?
Most parts suppliers like O'reily's or Autozone will check it either on the car or off. Quick way to check is with the car running, remove the positive cable from the battery. If the car dies, the alternator is bad.
