Serpentine Belts

There is a tension pulley located on the left side and down about half way down with a arm attached to it, you have to pull the tension arm up to release the belt. actually on the 96 model it not that simple just to change the serpentine belt you have to disconnect MOTOR MOUNT before you can remove belt i know that sound crazy but i have a 96 acheiva sc v6 that i change belt on not pretty!

my brother and I used a hole saw and drilled thru the wheelwell. He had to heat the bolts with a mapp gas torch. But it worked. john

more than likely it's your alternator that is slowly but surely going out,or it could be your serpentine belt making the noise because it isn't tight enough around all the drive wheels.hope this helps.bye It can also be your power steering. I am tryint to put my serpentine belt back, after i just installed my alternator,a nd io am haveing difficulties, i am looking for a diagram to show the route of the way the belt should go.

Check under the hood for a black and white sticker. Should be labelled serpentine belt routing.

It more than likely needs new bearings. That is why it is out of line, unless the vehicle has been in an accident. Remove the belt, and remove the tensioner idler pulley and repair it.

You have to remove the alternator belt, and the power steering belt first. Then loosen the tightener under the vehicle for the AC belt. Remove old belt and install new one. Replace the other 2 belts at the same time and then reinstall A/C belt first then the other 2 in correct order. This is the simplistic information. If you need specifics check the manuals from the local library or get your own from the local auto shop.

You need to locate the tensioner pulley which keeps pressure on the belt. Use a wrench (of correct size) and pull on the nut on the pulley to relieve tension on the belt. You should them be able to slide the belt off. You do the same thing to put the new belt back on. Make sure it is routed correctly. There will be a routing diagram for the belt on top of the radiator support. The nut for the pulley threads on in reverse so you won't loosen it when pulling on it.

There are a few things to try but the best solution is to never use belt dressing on anything but a v-belt and don't use it then unless it's an emergency. You can try spraying WD-40 on the belt in small increments instead but usually a noisy belt is a signal for a new belt or some adjustment to pulleys or tension.

To remove belt dressing you can try some mild soap and warm water which might work if it hasn't adhered to the pulleys too much. There is a part called a belt tensioner that is spring loaded. IT has a pulley that is muonted to an arm. If you use a socket drive or socket depending on the particulars of it, you can move it enough to release the tension on it. Keep in mind it is spring loaded.
