Starters and Ignition Systems

Ignition systems are found in all complex engines. They are attached to a power source that provides both the power to the system and to the starters in order to turn on the engine.

How do you replace ignition switch on 1986 camaro?

Remove the dress plate under the steering column. There is a clip there for the shift indicator, if you shift on the column. There are two nuts on studs, one on each side of the column, remove these nuts, and the steering column will drop down. The switch is on top of the column just lower then the fastening bracket. Unplug the wiring, remove the screws that retain the switch, install new one and adjust. Put everything back together.

Can you make a fusible link from the alternator to the starter?

A fusable link is exactly like the old fashioned household fuse. You make a fusabling link by cutting the wire and inserting a small length of wire 2 wire sizes smaller (I believe its two, don't quote me.) So if the wire is 12 gauge, put in a small length of 14 gauge. (A 14 gauge wire is small than 12 gauge) Make sure you use stranded insulated wire that is meant for cars and that you use the mechanical connectors with insulation built onto them (usually blue) that you attach to the wire by using a crimping tool. I think the length of the fuse should be about 1 inch to about 1.5 inches. Wrap it with plenty of black electrician's tape. If the fuse does burn out (which you want it to if there is too much current going through the wire) the black tape will protect the wire from shorting out to the body of the car, which cause you real problems.

How do you replace a starter on a Mazda B4000 pick up truck?

This truck uses three different engines, all with slightly different starter mounting. All starter replacements are pretty similar though.

Most importantly you must first disconnect the negative battery cable.

Raise and support the vehicle.

From under the vehicle remove the large and small power wires to the starter.

Remove the starter mounting bolts

Remove the starter.

Reverse procedure for installation.

Where can you find the starter motor for a 1991 Buick Regal GS - where under the hood is it located?

The starter motor is located between the transmission and the engine which engages the starter clutch with the flywheel, which rotates and starts the engine.

How do you replace a car starter on a 1981 Chevrolet El Camino?

if your wiring from scratch the original vettes had a positive battery cable on the main bigger terminal on the starter solenoid. they woul also have fusable links that feed certain circuits power when ignition like lights horn auto locks brake lights. the s terminal is the signal from the ignition swich that would engage starter when key was turned all the way, the start wire from ignition switch is wired through a safety circuit, for manual transthe circuit is open until clutch pedal is depressed with auto trans its wired through the neutral safety switch. the reson for this is so when you try to start your car in gear it will not engage starter until clutch padel is depressed, with auto if car is left in any gear except park or neutral the starter will not engage. I have seen many people hurt running direct feed to starter. they turn the key and the carlurches instantly into whatever is in your way. do it right

Why key ignition switch not turning?

When the ignition key won't turn in a car or truck, it could be that the pins in the lock cylinder came out and locked the lock. Also, if the key is old, it could be worn down too much. One other thing a person should try is rocking the wheel while turning the key. It also could be that the ignition switch needs to be replaced.

Whats the best way to take the starter off a 1985 Ford Probe LX?

If it's a 1997 or similar age, jack up the front and remove the bar that holds the radiator up, (you'll have to support the radiator by another means) there's 3 bolts to undo, as well as the 2 electrical connections. There should be enough room to squeeze it past the radiator.

Why would a ignition coil keep burning out?

I suppose this is a car component. The ignition coil could be burned due to high current flow through the primiry wiring for too long time (large dwell angle). If this is an old style mechnical point ignition system, check the point air gap for correct dwell angle. If this is a new distrubutor less system, the igniter should be checked.

How do you get the starter out of a Chevy s10 blazer 1985?

Depends on engine size but if you have the common 2.8, easiest thing to do is place a jack under the engine and just get tension on it to relax the passenger side engine mount. Remove the mount bolt. Slightly jack engine up, you dont need a whole lot like maybe an inch at most. with starter removed, flip it upside down, and pull it out the front under the exhaust, but over the control arm. you may have to actually remove the mount plate from the engine if it wont quite clear.

How do you remove ignition lock from 91 Jeep Cherokee?

Assuming that you do not ( as suggested by the first answer) want the information in order to steal a car (which would take a while with the following procedure) it is

possible to change the ignition key lock on a 92 Honda Accord Automatic, although even the Honda service manual indicates that you must change the entire ignition switch (the entire apparatus that goes around the steering column and is held in place by two sheer bolts that have to be drilled out and require that you remove the steering wheel, the shields behind it and the instrument panel). Since I have changed the lock myself, without doing any of that, I know that it can be done. Also, the entire switch costs a fortune, whereas the lock and keys can usually be had on eBay for around $30.00.

First, take both cables off the battery. Before you do, make sure that your radio isn't one of those anti-theft jobs that needs a code when you hook the battery back up. If you don't have the code, no more radio.

Next, remove the shields behind the steering wheel. There are seven screws in the bottom shield, four threaded and three pointed. Remember where they go. After you have removed them, ease the portion of the bottom shield out from around the key lock, then it will be loose. If you have a tilt-wheel model, you will have to push the lever down (while holding the steering wheel where you want it) and then the shield can be pivoted so that it will come off the lever. Then push the lever back up.

The top shield will pull out from the top position with only minimal easing upward and outward.

After the shields are removed, you will see that the lock is behind the wiper apparatus and that the set screw (Philips head) can not be accessed in the normal manner. Don't give up yet. First, remove the illumination bulb from the plastic shield around the lock itself. Turn the bulb holder about ¼ turn and it should then come out of the housing. Then, remove the plastic shields themselves. There are three of them and they will all come off after you figure out how various plastic parts clip minimally onto the lock. It just takes a bit of working back and forth. When you have the shields off, you are ready to remove the lock itself.

At this point, insert the key into the lock and turn the lock to I. Leave it there.

Two maneuvers that would be very easy if the steering wheel were removed are more difficult this way, but they can be done with slow care and effort. First, the set screw has to be loosened, NOT removed. Using a good pair of needle-nose pliers, you can carefully turn the screw out until the lock will clear it (you can see the inner point of the screw where it blocks the locks removal, so you should be able to see when it no longer will cause such a block). Next, you must push in the pin that is part of the lock itself and comes up in a hole in the casing just a short distance back from the set-screw (you may need a flashlight to see the hole). Now, since you don't have the steering wheel removed, you can't simply push a small Philip's head screwdriver into the hole to compress the pin. You will have to use something like an Allen wrench (with the 45% angle) of the proper size to fit into the hole and carefully fit the end into the hole while holding the longer end. Even then, you probably won't be able to get enough pressure on the Allen wrench to push in the pin unless you carefully insert a flat-bladed screwdriver behind the wrench and lever it into the hole. I know, sounds like you need three hands, but if you are careful, and give yourself plenty of time, it will work.

Once you have the pin compressed, with your fourth hand you can work the lock out of the casing. Okay, sometimes the pin will pop back up and you will have to compress it again, but if you work the lock out as much as possible (just a hair) before compressing the pin, it will tend to catch the pin under the casing so that you can continue with removal.

When you have the lock out, you will find that it still has one wire connected to it by what appears to be a piece of plastic with the screw through it. Remove the screw, then, CAREFULLY pry up the end that the screw goes through and remove the plastic part by moving it slightly in the direction of the screw hole and lifting it up (there is a tiny tab at the other end of the part that fits into the lock, so you will have to put that end in first when you connect the part to the new lock). Okay, get your new lock, making sure that it is the same as your old lock and attach the plastic part and screw in reverse of how you took them off.

Now, with the new lock with key inserted and turned to I, carefully slide it back in in the same position as the old one was when you removed it. It should, perhaps with only a slight amount of pressure, click into place (the pin comes up in the hole). When that is accomplished, you should try the key to see that it turns through it positions easily.

If it does, carefully (using the needle-nose pliers) tighten the set-screw that holds the lock in position. Then replace the three plastic lock shields and put the illumination bulb back in simply by reversing the turn by which you took it out.

At this point, you should hook your battery back up and see it everything works as it should before you go through the trouble of reinstalling the top and bottom shields. Start the car.

If it starts, give it a short test drive to make sure it runs and shifts properly then turn it off, replace the shields and congratulate yourself on having done that which they all said couldn't be done.

Good luck.

How do you put in a starter?

Either connecvt 12V directly to starter to make sure it rotates - Safely secure (a lot of torque) or bring to an auto parts store that has the ability to fully check for drag amperage draw etc. - most will do this free Yes, it is called 'bench testing' and requires that the starter be removed from the vehicle. Many repair shops and some parts shops can do a bench test cheaply, sometimes free, if the removed starter is brought to them. Firstly, after removing the starter, check the bendix gear (small gear inside the starter on a shaft) for excessive wear, cracks, or breakage. If any exists, replace the gear or entire starter as necessary. The bendix can often, but not always, be replaced by itself cheaply. Bench testing is done by securing the starter in some fashion, usually in a vise, but it can be strapped to something solid or held down with your foot (carefully, when voltage is applied the starter will want to jump, roll and twist with sometimes huge torque). Once the starter is secure, positive electricity is applied to the correct solenoid wiring stud, sometimes marked with 'S', (usually from a vehicle battery with jumper cables), and then the negative cable is touched to the starter housing. What should happen is that the bendix (small gear on the starter shaft) should fly down to the tip of the starter shaft and spin. If the bendix spins, but doesn't shoot down the shaft, the starter solenoid is bad. Replace the solenoid. This is usually cheaper than replacing the entire starter, but check both prices and judge the best action. If nothing happens at all, try a different wiring stud (if more than one is present). If still no response, the starter probably needs to be replaced. When obtaining a new starter, take the old one along for reference and possibly a confirmation bench test to determine the correct parts required.

How do you remove ignition barrel from a peugeot 205 without the key?

the problem is that the key is used (when inserted) to dis-engage the steering lock. If the lock is engaged you have a problem. The barrel itself is located/locked in the tube with a small locating bolt.To get at this ,however you need to remove the lower dash first and then the top housing. You will then be able to see the bolt head (6mm I think). On the underside of the barrel tube there is a spring loaded locator bar which must be pushed in and at the same time the barrel eased out (use a srewdriver). The wires from the switch go out to 2 connectors 1 brown (4 way) and one white (6 way)

the wiring must be freed from the loom and these plugs disconnected , they can then be fed back through the side of the steering barrel tube. Hope this helps Dave

How do you install starter on 1995 Cadillac sedan deville?

try going to the parts store and buying a chilton manual for the make and model of your vehicle. It has diagrams and step by step instructions. It will cost somewhere around 30 dollars of so and if you ever need to fix any other part of the same vehicle you will have it at your fingertips.

Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. And this is What Chiltons doesn't tell you:I've done it too many times. You probably need to remove the pipe from the manifold and pull it towards the front of the engine until it comes off the male end of the muffler in front of the catalytic converter. The rest is smooth sailing because you can't get the starter out of there without it being removed. The bolts on the manifold are tricky and may requre plenty of liquid wrench, patience and a double jointed socket. These starters and the whole damn car were notorious for electrical problems. Improve your chances by having the starter rebuilt by a professional shop, you'll save money and they'll spec it according to your car, not like the generac crap you get at Auto whatever.Getting the starter out requires a little twisting and turning but it does come out. Finally, buy a grounding wire and attach it to the ground bolt on the starter on top of the existing ground wire. Take the other end and secure it to the frame of the car, doesn't have to be long, drill a hole or find an existing hole and put a safety washer and bolt on it, securing it to the frame. I sanded the area down a little to have a good contact. The aluminum blocks on these vehicles don't ground well and it's worth the extra effort. The poor grounding can lead to failures in the ignition switch, alternator, battery, etc. Good luck.

Why does your new starter just click?

1. Battery is weak
2. Battery posts are dirty and not allowing good connection
3. Wires are not in good condition
4. Bad ground to engine from battery
5. Wire not tight on starter
6. Solenoid is defective (on fords and other cars with separate solenoids)
7. Defective starter (even new ones can be. I bought a bad one in Sept.)

Where is the starter located on a 1999 Honda Passport?

The starter is located on the drivers side right below your manifold and right above the start of your exhaust. Good luck trying to replace. I have no idea how to do this other than to drop the exhaust...

How To Remove

1. Removed the (-) wire on the battery.

2. Disconnect 02 sensors (2)

3. Lower exhaust front left pipe (5 nuts) 3 in front flange 2 on rear. Needed 10" extension and I think the nut was 17mm

4. Remove starter (2 bolts) 14 mm

5. Remove wires on starter. One is a plug in and the other is attached with a nut 12mm. I found it easy to remove it once starter was loose I could get a better view of it.

Good Luck

I looked on this site for this information myself. I have a 99 Passport and needed to change the starter. It is, like the answer below says, on the driver's side forward of the exhaust and below the manifold. I didn't find any good answers for how to get it out of the compartment so a friend and I went at it this afternoon.

Disconnect the battery first. After that you may want to remove the driver's side front wheel. This gave us access to the starter for removal of the battery cable and the spade terminal which are on top of the starter while it is mounted. We then removed the two bolts that hold the starter in place. All of that took about 10 minutes to complete. On my passport the battery cable came off with a 12mm, the spade terminal is plug and play and all you have to do is push down on the tab on top and pull the terminal apart. The bolts for the starter are 14mm on my car. You need extensions to get at them though.

After that is when all of the work began. We then tried every way possible to get it out of the compartment without taking anything else apart. No luck. So we removed the heat shields around the exhaust manifold and exhaust. Still not enough room. So finally we took the 3 bolts out of the flange that connects the exhaust manifold to the exhaust pipe. We had to use reverse torque bolt sockets for this. The one we used was the NAPA E-14. There are nuts on the bolts but removing only those won't do the trick. They are 17mm in case you are wondering. We then had to remove the bracket just aft (rearward) of the catalytic converter to get enough play in the exhaust pipe. Once you do this, the starter slides right out of the space moving down and aft.

The new starter goes right in no problems once you are to this point. The only casualty to the whole process was one of the bolts from that flange on the exhaust manifold lost it's threads in the process. We were lucky that none of mine sheared off which is apparently a large concern and somewhat of a probability. Good luck.

Where is the starter motor located on a Chevy 1979 Silverado?

hmmmmm..... well.. I'll try, there is a solenoid on top of the starter when you send power to it from the ignition switch it magnetizes and pulls a piston which in turn pushes the gear into the flywheel. then the contacts inside supply power to the brushes on the motor and it spins the motor

Which wires go where on a 99 Saturn starter?

Depending on the vehichle, you may only have one wire going to the starter, which would be the positive wire from the battery. In addition to this wire, many vehicles have a wire or pair of wires going to the solenoid housing on the starter. The positive wire is a very thick, heavy wire, which usually will have a loop terminal at the end, which fits over a post on the starter, which has a nut that threads down to secure the positive wire.

Often wire lengths will give you a hint as to where they should be connected, and wires frequently are bent to fit the connections. Be careful if you are guessing on where the solenoid wires connect, because a mistake could fry the solenoid.

In AdditionMany vehicles may have an additional, fairly heavy wire that runs to the same post as the battery. This wire makes its way to the alternator and is the location of the charging system fuseable link.

Where is the neutral safety switch on 1991 Nissan Sentra 1.6?

Depends on the transmission. If the car is a stick shift then the switch is at the back of the clutch peddle. Its a little plunger found just behind the top part of the peddle. If the car is an automatic then the switch is usually on the shifter. I'm not positive of this specific application though. You'll need to remove the shifter bezel off the console to access it...

Why your 1998 C230 key wont turn in ignition?

I had this on an XC70 recently. (The key would turn to get the dashboard lights on, but that was it).

The lock was broken and needed to be replaced.

But the AA man did manage to force the key to work and this enabled me to use car for a few days awaiting the lock with the same code as before.
