Next, unscrew the three nuts holding the exhaust system bracket to the starter mount studs. Then, remove the exhaust system bracket off of the starter studs. Once the bracket is removed you can start removing the studs that secure the starter to the engine block. Finally, when the last stud is ready to be removed, you better have your hand ready to catch the starter when it falls downward because when that last stud is removed it is under gravitational pull.

If its anything like a 93 all you do is disconnect the battery, disconnect and mark for reinstallation the wires at the starter. Remove the two bolts that hold it, and drop it out. Make sure to hold on to any shims that might be there.

Take all the other keys off your keyring, the weight of the other keys maybe causing the ignition key to be unreadable.also it depends on what is wrong with the system. if it the anti-theft system it may be very pricy, but if it is the ignition lock cylinder than it will cost you about $100 for the new lock cylinder and several hours of labor if you are very good at working with cars.

The starter is bolted onto the transmission on the driver side. There are two bolts that holds the starter in place. The first bolt is located under the starter which is easy to get. The second bolt is located on the top of the starter which has a tight sqeeze to get to. Most mechanic will drop the transmission or loosen the transmission to get to it. With due respect, if you have small hands, you may be able to reach it.

An automotive ignition coil is nothing more than a transformer which has been designed and manufactured for a specific [dedicated] application.
It consists of two coils of transformer wire, arranged around a "soft iron" metal core.
The "Primary" winding is fed with 12 Volts DC from the vehicle battery. The "Secondary" winding [having MANY more turns of wire] is the "output" end of the transformer. The greater the difference in the number of "turns" between the two coils the greater the voltage output is increased.
The way an ignition coil works is that when the distributor "points" are closed, electrical current is allowed to flow through the Primary coil winding. This flow of current creates a magnetic field around the wire which is induced into the metal core.
When the points open, the flow of current is turned off, causing the magnetic field to "collapse." The collapsing magnetic field in the Primary winding and core "induce" a VERY high voltage current flow in the Secondary winding, which is then distributed to the proper spark plug by the rotor in the distributor.

You don't. You replace the starter and then start the car. In the past with older cars you could push start the car with an A/T and it would start at around 35 mph, but with modern transmissions I highly recommend against doing this. You may damage the transmission.

The answers are not there for that engine, only the other models. Once you see it, you will know it. If it is overheating, bleed the system (bleed screw is on top, passenger side under the intake)before you start replacing parts. This is common on these engines because the water pump can draw in air at high RPM's and corrupt the system. If you have a consistent air problem, the water pump may need to be changed. Radiators have been known to collapse after a lot of miles also in the Subaru Legacy models. Check the cooling fan operations and all of the other standard checks before you give up. Many times it is something simple. Just don't let it get so hot that you blow a head gasket. Good luck.

Remove the plastic cover from around the steering column.
Turn the old ignition cylinder to ACC (I know what you are about to say... If you can turn the cylinder, why replace it. Unfortunately I can't answer that. I had to drill out the old lock to replace the one on my saturn. Please consult a locksmith before doing so. You don't want to drill into the wrong parts.)
With the old cylinder turned to ACC, there is a small button on the side (probably upper right towards the air vents) Push this button in and the old cylinder should pull out. Installation is reverse of removal (without the drilling...)

The problem can be that the battery terminals are not tight enough or that the battery cables are worn out. A starter needs really tight contact to the battery in order to supply enough current to the solenoid and starter -- merely touching the terminals won't be enough.

Just because the starter has been replaced, it still shouldn't be ruled out. I have had several occasions that a remanufactured starter failed. Typically Autozone or Advance auto parts stores carry these POS. Having said that, I would be looking for a bad connection or maybe an ignition switch. Some vehicles have a large heavy relay to drive the starter motor, if this is old, dirty or damaged it may be sluggish to operate Some new vehicles have a ignition switch that sends a signal to the ECM and the ecm tells a relay when to turn over the engine. These have a delayed effect. Brake pedals will be incorporated this way also, eliminated the hydrolic brake systems completely.

Under the hood you will see 2 cables comming from the throttle body. one is the foot pedal the other leads to the cruise control module. That is it! The cruise control unit is located inside the left front fender. You have to remove the wheel and wheel well liner to access it.

I just fixed my starter but its my fourth one i went through...the first three were rebuilt and junk. the one i have now is used out of a wrecked jetta and its working great. well first you unhook the battery from the car then there are three wires total that you have to take off from the starter. one can be easily unplugged and the other two are connected to a bolt on the starter. unscrew the nut from the bolt and the two wires then can be pulled off. next there are three bolts you have to take out...before you take out the bolts make sure you have something holding up the transmission (next to the oil pan under the car) when you take the bolts out it will drop a little but it wont fall out. there are two bolts undernearth the starter and one on top of the starter...the two underneath can only be accessed to by getting under the car...there might be some brackets that will have to be taken out but it can be easily figured out...i got to go to my next class now...so good luck!

look from the bottom on the back side of the engine you'll see it there. When you get under the car, it's in the middle of the engine/gearbox, above the exhaust, to left from the oil pan. it's easier to see if from the right side (passenger).

the starter is located on the front of the engine bottom side. it is tricky to remove & install I have just recently replaced mine and some of the ac lines & hoses get in the way. GOOD LUCK!! What is the cost to repair a neutral safety switch on a 2001 Chevy Malibu LS?
$100 for a new switch at Napa Auto Parts. Most neutral safety switches are a sealed, non reparable unit. If you are doing this yourself, I would recommend testing the wiring before replacing the unit since it is expensive. According to the Napa website, the safety switch on the 2001 Chevy Malibu does more tha simply close when in neutral, so I cannot give specifics. I recommend checking your local library to see if they have a copy of the shop manual. It will have detailed troubleshooting flowcharts to track down the exact problem.

if you mean the ignition coil packs yes you can test. you need to take them out of the car. then using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the primary terminals on the underside of the coil. the resistance should be 0.50-0.90 ohms. then check the resistance between the secondary terminals (were the plug wires go). it should be 5000-10,000 ohms.

My guess is that it is on right top side of trammy, but not shure, kinda dark right now, if wrong i will repost when light=) it is below the engine and has three bolts. Be carefull though I had an 87 escort back in 1990 and when I had to change the starter the bolts would not turn, eventually the head snapped right off - had a similar problem with a probe. The starter has a strong twisting force and it probably really jams the bolts in after years.
