What is a safe tire pressure range?
This question needs to be more specifc to produce a reliable answer. The answer will vary depending on they kind of tire, the vehicle, and the use for which the tire is applied. If we're considering a car, light truck, SUV or other passenger vehicle, there is usually a placard on the door, in the glove compartment or the fuel compartment cover which specifies the best tire pressure for the vehicle. This may be as low as 24 psi or as high as 35psi in most cases, but this is not an acceptable range to operate under. The safest range is withing 1-2 pounds of the level on the door sticker, or the owner's manual specs. Never operate for normal conditions using the Maximum pressure which is stamped on the side of the tire. This maximum is the greatest pressure which the tire is designed to resist ... not the recommended operating pressure. If a tire is used with less than the optimum pressure you note that the outside edges of the tread will be wearing faster than the center. This is a clear sign that you need to use more pressure. If the tire is wearing only in the center of the tread faster than the outside edges, then you need to reduce the pressure. The vehicle's weight and the load carried also play a part. The heavier the load the the more pressure required in the tires.
How do you replace a clutch cable fork on an Escort 1.8 diesel?
To replace a clutch cable fork on an Escort 1.85 diesel, first lift the clutch pedal to release the adjuster mechanism. Pull the cable through and hook the clutch cable fork.
For both these, it is necessary to remove the steering column covers. This is fiddly but not difficult: two screws on top, two underneath, and two inside, remove the choke control (the knob unclips from its shaft), and wiggle the plastic round the ignition switch. The flasher unit is underneath to the left and simply unclips and pulls out. The indicator switch assembly - which has all the switches on it, you can't separate them - is held in place with two screws and the everlasting plastic clips. Remove this and then unplug the cable; this is another fiddly job (why can't the makers make things easy?) as you have to push the retaining clip in, then hinge the plug down before it will come away. I'd advise you to buy a spare switch unit, as they are prone to fail. Known stock faults are the indicator auto-cancel mechanism (it's plastic and splits) and the rear wiper switch (the contacts burn out because they're overloaded by the motor. There's no relay on this circuit for some reason, I'd reccommend fitting one). Unless you've got a very early model, it is possible to dismantle these and repair them, though since you can often find them on Ebay for only a few pounds it isn't really worth the bother, though a new unit at
How do you find reverse gear in a 1974 Beetle?
Try This. 1) Push in the clutch pedal. 2) Push the shift stick straight down...toward the ground, and hold down. 3) Push left...toward yourself. 4) Push back...toward the rear of the car. So that's DOWN, LEFT, BACK. The reason you have to go thru all the trouble is so that you don't accidentally stick it in reverse cruising down the road (that would be bad). If it doesn't stay in gear, the shift coupler in the center tunnel under the rear seat is probably hosed.
What is the diiference between a VW 6 volt flywheel or 12 volt flywheel?
I think you should check your terms. Voltage has nothing to do with the flywheel at all. I can only assume you are talking about 6 Bolt or 12 Bolt flywheel. The difference between that is clear. It is the number of bolts used to fasten the flywheel.
I think before answering one should understand the VW.
This question is relevant to the old beetle not the new beetle.
They were used on bugs up to 1966.
The 6 volt flywheel is from a 6 volt car , It is smaller in diameter and has a different tooth count than the larger 12 volt flywheel.
It will only mesh with the 6 volt starter.
If you are converting a bug to 12 volt and changing the starter and flywheel you'll have to grind out the bell housing on the 6 volt transmission.
A lot of people leave the starter 6 volt when converting to 12.
All the old bugs have the same number of flywheel bolts.
One large gland nut, that's all

How do you replace a fuel system on a 1974 VW Beetle?
Get John Muirs -"How to keep your Volkswagen alive, A manual for the Compleat Idiot" and Bentleys "workshop manual". They have a huge amount of info, John Muir is a "real world" work-book and the Bently Manual is the VW "Official Workshop Manual" . Please be more specific when asking questions, the more info the better, if you mean the fuel pump on a Carb model then take the fuel lines off then take off the bolts that hold down the pump. Just be sure and get the right model pump for the right year Bug. There is a shaft that the pump rides on and over the years they changed lengths slightly.
How do you take out the stock radio in a 2001 Volkswagen beetle?
To the left and right of your factory radio are narrow vertical slots. Volkswagen, as well as a local car audio shop, can provide you with keys that slide into these slots to hook onto the stereo and pull it out. If you are the DIY type and want to fashion your own, the hooking point is in the lower portion of these slots. Design your stereo removal key with the "hook" facing down to properly catch the unit with damaging it. Once the keys have "caught" the stereo, simply pull it towards you in a slow, controlled yet firm manner. NOTE: The top and bottom of your stereo unit have indentations that are filled by flexible semi-spheres with a tong-like action to secure the radio in place. The more you adjust these, the more flexible they will become. The end result is that you may need a new harness for your unit in order for it to stay in place.
How do you change the timing belt on a 1998 VW Beetle or is this something the dealership should do?
Timing belt is not usually a job you do yourself unless you are somewhat mechanically inclined. A serpentine belt can be changed easily but the timing belt is internal and usually requires the waterpump to be changed as well. My advice is to find some videos on YouTube or a vw forum.

How do you change the engine mounts on a 1995 Ford Contour?
As I have stated before on some of these questions-the first thing to do is to get a good repair manual. Replacing the motor mounts does invlove seveal steps that atre well outlined in most of them. There are four mounts on these-one at each end & a front & rear mount. it is much easier to follow the book step by step than it is to follow someone else's instructions. The books also usually include some pictures. Have fun. The Bigtomato.

What is Error Code P0411 on 1998 VW Beetle?
It's the "secondary air injector incorrect flow" error, usually caused by leaking vacuum lines. It could be more complex, but checking to see if any of the vacuum lines are cracked is a free and easy way to rule that out as a possible cause.

How do you reset the check engine light on a 1997 Kia Sephia?
you can only reset it with an OBDII diagnostic code reader.
I recently replaced the battery in my '97 Sephia, and took it in to get inspected. They said that because my battery had been replaced that morning, the computer had reset and I would have to drive it for about 75 miles to reset the codes (if present). So I drove it a while and took it back, and it was ok. I tried that the next time the check engine light came on, and the light went away (for about 75 miles, then the computer reset and it came back on). If you have recently acquired this car, you'll find out that the check engine light and the associated problems are common with '97 Sephia's. Good Luck!
If you reset the code for the check engine light and it comes back on after a while of driving that means that you just reset the code not fixed the problem. You will have to goto someone who has a tech to that they can hook upi to your computer and there will be a code that will come up and the mechanic should be able to tell you what is wrong.
The " check engine light" is by far one of the most misunderstood technological advances It is a warning light that is illuminated when there is a problem affecting the EMISSIONS of the vehicle.. Don't let it bother you as it is a good thing once you understand it. One point that was brought up a recent meeting of technicians was that the amount of hydrocarbons is greater when the gas cap is left off than when the engine is running. Hydrocarbons are part of pollution emitted as gasoline evaporates. Going a step farther, one facet of the emission system is the "Evaporative" portion. This is when the fumes from the gasoline are leaking from the system into the outside air. This is one part of the emission system that can trigger a check engine light. I would say a small percentage of the vehicles that have a check engine light are the result of a loose or inadequate gas cap. But understand that many scenarios are possible with the "check engine light" The vehicle's powertrain computer (note that some vehicles have multiple computers aside from the powertain computer) will run a series of self-tests. They will only run under certain criteria. And they are different from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some self-tests or monitors are not run until preceding ones have run successfully. So if there is a problem in one particular area that is preventing another self test from running, you can have a situation where one problem is fixed, but another still exists. If you fix a problem and drive the car through a drive cycle that sets the monitor (or self test) the light will go off as it passes that criteria that triggered it in the first place. There are many different sources for the light to come on. Anything that caused combustion to fail, commonly called a misfire will set the light. Various sensors such as oxygen sensors that evaluate the exhaust before and after the gases are burned in the converter. Transmission codes may set the check engine light to appear. If the car is running okay, get it fixed in a reasonable amount of time such as within the month. It will probably save you fuel if you do. However if the Check engine light is flashing, you should be driving it as damage is being done to the converter. Some emission components are covered beyond the standard warranty. The converter for example is covered up to 80,000 miles by the manufacturer. After 1996, the auto industry went to a idea called OBD II (on board diagnostics). This was to get all the manufacturers onto a similar plane for troubleshooting and powertrain control. While they still differ, many corrections and adaptations were made for technicians to better fix the check engine light problems. Prior to this there were so many different and poor troubleshooting data from a check engine light problem that resolving the problem was much more difficult. Many early warning light of this nature were set to illuminate based on mileage. An Oxygen sensor was one of the things that were meant to be replaced when that mileage was hit. This is much like many current "Change oil lights that are set based on a pre-set mileage. To start testing for the check engine light, youll need to find the codes from the computer, match the code to the troubleshooting procedure, follow the procedure to find the source. Repair the source, light will go out if that was the only problem. There are "monitors" or self tests the computer runs the car through a drive cycle, if a problem occurs, it may not run all of the self tests until that problem is taken care. There are self-tests for the oxygen sensor circuit, egr system, evaporative system to name a few. Therefore, another problem may exist. It is emission related.
OR hook up a scanner that is capable of clearing codes, and hope that it wont come back on. But dont bet on it. Lastly, disconnecting the battery in some cars will clear the memory of the computer and may temporarily turn the light off. Beware that this may also cause other problems such as the car not rembering its idle and will have to relearn it, the radio may be rendered inoperative or in the case of the new Toyotas, the air bag can blow.

How do you un jam the sliding sun visor on VW Beetle?
I just repaired my sunvisor. You have to buy four new guides for the sun visor. It cost me $75.00 Cdn. from the dealer. You have to remove the sunroof. With it tilted up there are three screws on each side. After the sunroof is off you can jimmy the visor forward to take it out and put on the new guides. I set the visor on and put the guides on in the track on one side in then the other side. It is a tight fit. When you put the sunroof back on make sure the tilt is down to position the glass properly. It took about an hour to do.
You will have to call a locksmith. He has a device that will pry the door open slightly. he will use long rod to open the door. Shop around and offer cash to get your best deal.
I would bet you are using the wrong key. Otherwise it would open the door.
Can a Volkswagen Beetle float on water?
If there are no holes in the floor pan and all the seals are good, VW Bugs will float. Right now, after what--30 or 40 years collecting pan holes and dry-rotted seals?--you should not try it. Oh yes...on the 1970 and later Bugs there are those little grilles behind the back windows. You've seen 'em, right? Volkswagen "officially" sez they're in there for ventilation. The real reason they're in there is because with the 1969s and earlier, that didn't have those vents, the car was sealed so tightly you couldn't slam the doors shut because they wouldn't latch if you tried it.
Installation instructions for 1966 Volkswagen beetle gas pedal?
There are three parts to the pedal--the pedal itself, the thing it pushes on and the cable coming out the back of it.
The pedal is real easy to install because it's held in with a metal rod that sticks through two bent-up places on the floor. You pull the rod out, take out the old pedal, put the new one in and replace the rod.
The thing it pushes on is the "pedal cluster." The brake and clutch pedals are part of it. To get this out you gotta jack up the car and unhook the clutch cable from the transmission, then open the engine cover and unhook the accelerator cable from the carb. The cluster is held to the car by two bolts which go into the tunnel. Remove them both, then work the clutch arm out through the hole it goes into. (While you're there, look at the end of the clutch cable and at the clutch arm. If either of them looks questionable, replace it now because floating the gears to get home is not fun.)
The cable you replace by removing the pedal cluster, pulling the old cable out, pushing the new one in and reattaching it at both ends. Make sure you get a cable for a carbureted car. The ones for fuel injected cars will work but they're too long.
