EGR Systems

When the temperature in the combustion chamber becomes extremely hot, nitrous oxides are formed, which then turn into smog. In order to reduce such occurrence, the exhaust gas recirculation system minimizes the temperature in the combustion chamber.

Where is the bank 2 oxygen sensor located on the 2000 Nissan Xterra?

On Asian cars, bank one is the passenger side and bank two is the driver side. (Japanese drive on the right side of the road.) 2000 V6 Xterra should only have three oxygen sensors (two front, one rear) but later models should have four. Verify this with your Nissan parts guy with your VIN. If yours has California (or 50-state) emissions, yours may have four in which case you need to know whether the code you pulled is for front bank two or rear bank two.

How do you get your egr valve to not stick open all the time?

IT IS A BAD THING TO HAVE YOUR E.G.R. VALVE STUCK OPEN. THIS WILL GIVE YOU A LEAN AIR/FUEL MIXTURE AND DAMAGE YOUR ENGINE. EGR VALVES DONT GO BAD TOO OFTEN; THEY JUST CARBON UP. TRY CLEANING IT WITH CARB CLEANNER. REINSTALL AND TRY IT OUT.

Where is the EGR valve located on a 1993 Plymouth Voyager 2.5 - It's not where the diagrams say it should be- to the left of the throttle body.?

Some vehicles dont have EGR Valve... I have a 90 Caravan, same engine as yours, basically the same thing as what you have and it has the EGR valve, then again, same engine in my 92 Dodge Spirit and it has no EGR Valve... the EGR is just mainly an emissions thing to help keep down on air polution. If yours did have the EGR Valve, they are really easy to spot, its on the left of the throttle body and the EGR Valve even says EGR right on top of it, so if you do have the valve you will know it very easily with or without any book or diagrams.

How do you clean the EGR valve on 1997 Miata?

Ahh, the p0402 check engine light.

First make sure you're using throttle body cleaner, not carburetor cleaner. Carb cleaner will eat away at the lining on the inside of your manifold.

First remove the EGR valve. It's right on the back of your manifold and looks like a metal mushroom. Next unplug the wiring harness and hang it out of the way. The valve itself comes off fairly easy with two 10mm screws although you'll notice a wire brace has to be removed to get the screws out.

Now take the valve itself and go to town with your cleaner and some q-tips. Also, you'll notice that you can take a pencil and push down on the actual valve mechanism through the top hole. Do this as you clean to make sure the cleaner goes all the way through the valve.

Once the valve itself is as spotless as you can get it try your best to clean the insides of the holes on the manifold itself. When you're done replace the valve and the wiring harness and make sure it's bolted on nice and tight. There's no reason to use a gasket on this part. Then replace the wiring harness.

Now disconnect your positive battery terminal for about 20 seconds to turn off the check engine light and go for a drive. If the CEL comes back on then try again, otherwise you're good.

Does anyone have a diagram of the exhaust system for a 1991 Dodge Colt from engine to tailpipe?

Any parts store of dealer will. Or try this link: http://www.walkerexhaust.com/catalog/vehicletypescrn.asp I don't have one, but if you go to autozone.com and go under shopping link on the left side. Enter your info about your car and what part you are loking for(exhaust). Then look to the left again and you should see repair guides, and other links that will show you how to install it, but scroll down and they usually have a real good picture of the entire system. Hope that might help?!! Brad

How do you remove the emissions systems from your vehicle?

Consider this a warning to anyone who is considering doing this!

In the US it is a Federal offense to remove any part of the emissions system!

If you are caught, as the vehicle's owner, you could face as much as $10,000 in fines.

AND anyone who does the work or helps (i.e. the mechanic, a friend, whoever) also faces up to $10,000 in fines.

Please be aware that there is ALSO a $10,000 reward for anyone who turns in someone who has removed or altered an emissions system - owner or mechanic.

Even if you live in an area where emissions testing is not required, you are not exempt from this regulation and you will still run the risk of being caught.

That is an awfully steep fine, IMO. I'd think twice before proceeding.

In any case you could at least check into the laws regarding this, in case the data I was given was wrong. But I had an ASE Master Technician tell me this! It's part of his job to stay on top of Federal and local regs.

If you want to repair your own emissions system, be careful and consider this first: Unless you can weld, and weld well, go ahead and let a professional do anything that has to do with the emissions/exhaust system. While it is possible to go to autozone and buy your own catalytic converter etc and put it on, it takes a lot of time unless you have the entire system in one piece. I recently replaced my exhaust from the catalytic converter back (the converter was still good), it passed but I had to piece together a exhaust system and it was the biggest ordeal ever. Stay away from Exhaust repairs if you can help it. They are tough!

Where is the egr valve in a 1989 Mazda b2200 truck?

EGR valve is allways connected to the exhaust pipe. It goes to the intake. It allows exhaust to flow into intake to reduce N.O. It has a vaccuum hose connected to it. The hose may be connected to a solenoid. On 94 and up check for ohms, if open replace. If this solenoid is bad you will fail smog every time. EGR valve is bolted to the manifold on passenger side, just underneath the carburetor. There are three hex head screws, requires 10mm socket.
