Locks and Latches

Locks and latches are parts of a door. While the latch ensures that the door stays in a closed position to prevent it from opening, lock prevents the door from being opened without a matching key.

What would cause the driver's door lock on your EX Coupe to stop responding via remote or manual operation when the passenger's lock is working fine?

Mine has never worked since i have had mine, but a little trick is to hold the door handle lever, like your opening your door from the inside, and lock it. I just had mine done on a Civic 2003 EX. It has less than 39,000 miles and the problems was that the tumblers were worn. It cost $125.00 to get repaired. I have a manual lock. They call it"re-keying"

How to fix a door that does not open from the inside?

Depends on the door, but if it workd from the outside, but not the inside, the problem is likely in one of two places. Either the Inside actuator is broken, or the rod connecting the actuator to the latch has been bent or come off. There are small plastic retaining clips that hold the rod in place and these may have broken or popped off. Either way you will have to take the door panel off and see where the problem is.

How do you fix auto door locks on 99 suburban Front doors work back don't When you push unlock button the back door locks move but don't quite lock or unlock Help?

I have a similar problem, My drivers side front and back work fine, it's my right side front and back that move but don't quit lock or unlock.

Each door has a motor that operates the door lock mechanism when the door lock button or the remote lock button is pushed. If the door lock moves a little but not enough to lock or unlock the door, then either the motor is not working fully or it is partially jammed, or the door lock mechanism is binding and the motor can't move it fully. Remove the door lock trim panel and check all the components involved in the door lock process until you find the problem.

I had the same problem in my 1999 Sub. The factory uses rivits to hold the door lock actuators in place. Over many uses the rivits elongate and the actuator travel is not enough to over come the longer distance. Try replacing the rivits with short screws. Short so they do not interfear with other stuff that moves in the door.

How do you disassemble medeco lock to paint door?

The medeco lock I just disassembled had 4 screws -- two on the edge of the door holding the latch in place and another two on the "interior" side, under the eschushion (sp?) plate -- the flatish part of the lock that actually touches the door. The trick is getting this plate off the door.

The interior knob should have a small notch on the neck of the knob, and there is a spring-loaded tab sticking through this notch to hold the knob on. Press this tab with a flat-head screwdriver or something similarly small and rigid (like an ice pick, or the pointer part of a triangle file.) while pulling on the knob. The knob should slide right off.

Next, look for a similar tab or wire loop sticking out from around the edge of the eschushion plate. Pressing this towards the shaft that the knob just slid off of while pulling (or prying lightly) on the place should make it come free.

Now you should be looking at the final two screws -- take them out, monkey with the "outside" handle for a bit, and the latch should release from the locking mechanism letting the whole knob assembly come free.

Reverse the process to put the lock back.

How many combinations are possible for a six-digit lock?

Assuming each "digit" actually has 10 different states, there are one million combinations possible in a six-digit combination lock. However, many combination lock designs actually have fewer than 10 different states per "digit", resulting in far fewer actual combinations on such locks.

How do you get the driver's side door lock to work when the key will go in but won't turn on a 96 Lumina 3.1?

Is it below freezing when this happens? Maybe there's water in lock and it's freezing. Even if it's not below freezing, have you tried spraying some wd40 into the key hole? There's actually better stuff to squirt into the key hole...look for a product that contains graphite and try that. If below freezing, I've also seen people use a cigarette lighter to heat up there key and then insert the key, wait a few seconds for the heat to melt the ice and then try turning the key.

How do you unlock a steering wheel It is locked and the key will not work?

This is called torque lock, and is caused when you remove the key when you have the wheel turned hard. Avoid this by letting go of the steering wheel before you turn the car off.

It also can be in a bind. Pull the wheel hard in each direction, while turning the key.

Put the key into ignition. Next, you can just turn the wheel to the direction that it got stuck in. For example, you accidently moved the steering wheel to the right really hard, and now it's stuck. Just turn it to the right all the way (which most likely make the steering wheel move 1/120th of a turn). Than all you have to do is turn the key and the wheel at the same time. Yay, your steering wheel isn't stuck anymore! =)

The key should still go into the ignition. You need to try to turn the wheel, while holding the wheel, try to turn the key gently. Usually you need to try to turn the wheel to the side the tires are pointing.

Take the steering wheel off and all the hardware. there should be a plate in there that has a small rod, no more than 2" long going though it. that's the lock. pull it out and it's not gonna lock anymore.

How would i open my hood when the hood release is broken?

Broken at the handle in the passenger compartment? Use vice grips on the cable. Pull the handle and nothing happens or cable just pulls out? Crawl under front and reach up and release the latch manually. No way huh. Okay, this is rather drastic but... (cough) fire attack personnal will cut a square hole(saw-n-spark) right above where that latch is located in the hood itself in the event of an engine fire. Now, I don't know what car you have, but without that release cable working there's not many options. Body work, or used hood replacement (junkyard) may be the answer to your bummer. ps. but don't call the fire dept. c-ya grade a da mopar man! Hi, I'm wondering where the hood release is broken? I'll take that the idea that the releasehandle is broken. The glove box needs to be removed and you can grab the cable from under the dash where the cable is. The worst case is if it's broken inside the engine compartment at the latch, The idea that I have is to remove the grill and reach from there to release the latch. I've just gone and looked at the situation and it does look as if, with a bit of work, you can locate and releaqse the latch by removing the grill. Hopefully, the latch is rusty and needs to be lubed to work but if it's broken, then buy the new cable assy which loos as it might contain the latch assy too. Hope this helps and good luck. Steve H.

Dodge Magnum door panel removal?

Gently pry the TWO screw covers off. One is round, it is behind the inside the interior latch (you grab to make door release). The second is rectangular and below the grab handle that you pull on to shut the door. Unscrew the two screws behind the covers, then unscrew the screws at the bottom of the door (these are hard to see because they are very low.) The screws are all phillips bit #2 and the same length (thank you GM) so you don't have to keep track of which one goes where, just don't lose any.

Next comes the specialty fasteners...

The top left and top right fasteners hold the upper trim on which usually doesn't need to come off. If your car is like mine, the door panels are two-tone with the darker part on top and you won't have to mess with the pop-fasteners in the top half. The front doors have three lighter-color pop-fasteners each. If you look closely, you will notice there is a circle inside each. Gently push on the inner circle with something like a wood dowel (hard, but not prone to damaging soft plastic) until it pops in slightly and releases the tension. CAREFULLY wiggle a small flat-head screwdriver under the outer circle then GENTLY pry them up. These are reusable as long as you are careful and don't force them.

Now comes the fun part. There are three hidden "christmas tree" fasteners at the top that you need to pop free. Slowly pull the door panel out and slightly up using the door handle. Work your fingers between the top of the panel and door on one side and gently but firmly pull out until one of the fasteners pops free, then do the other side, then put your hands behind both sides and pull to pop the middle one. When all three are released, you will have to hold the panel in the air close to where it was before you popped the clips (it's easiest to hold the handle) while you do the following:

1-Release the red door handle release clip and then the rod that it holds in place. The clip rotates out and is retained on the door panel, if it comes off, you broke it. The rod lifts straight up easily.

2-Pull out a small retainer that holds the wiring harness to the panel. The retainer is stuck to the wiring harness and will not come off.

3-Push the release tab that secures the connectors to the switches and pull the connectors out while the tab is pushed in. (One at a time.)

The "circle" clips can be reset by pushing the center post back out and some of it sticks out. Before you put it all back together, play with them to find the point where the assembly fits in the hole. When you reassemble the door, just push the post back in to the point that they are flush (like before you started this adventure.)

You will probably need to buy an "upholstery clip removal tool" to remove the "christmas tree" fasteners from the door. Every auto parts store carries this, they look like a snake tongue with a handle and they are usually about $10. I have never needed this tool to remove clips on any other car I have taken apart (20 or so), but the clips in the Magnum are TIGHT and will break if you don't use this tool to remove them. Follow the instructions on the tool to remove the clips. The clips have to be inserted into notches on the panel to put the panel back on the door. You will see where the "button" head of the clips slide and click into little notches on the panel.

Other than putting the Christmas tree clips into the panel first, assembly is reverse of removal. Take your time, don't forget to plug the wire harnesses back in to the switches and you should be OK!

Is there a switch or lever inside the car to open the hatch back on a 1990 ford probe?

it would be on the floor on the driver's side in front of the seat. if you reach down with your left hand, it should be right next to the front of the seat ================ I own a '91 GL and there is no lever or switch to open the hatchback, I have always had to do it manually. Other models or years may have incorporated one however, and it probably wouldn't be too hard to find. Chances are if you can't find one, it doesn't have one. -Shaun
