Locks and Latches

Locks and latches are parts of a door. While the latch ensures that the door stays in a closed position to prevent it from opening, lock prevents the door from being opened without a matching key.

If the hood release cable broke on your 1990 Cadillac Sedan DeVille how can you open the hood?

This is very very complicated but, it is very possible to open this hood. You could get under the hood (if possible loosen the panel) and physically make the latch operate, if that is not possible you could take off the bumper, then take off, thenn take off the grill and use a flathead screwdriver to wedge it off. The second method takes more work but very possible, good luck with this.

Get a piece of thick welding rod appo. 30in. to bend and make a tool .1st, bend 90d @1 inch. 2sec. bend 45d@ 4inch. 3rd. bend @ end 90d appo. the last 3in of the rod. now you nedd to slip this in behind the latch and hook the release .this is between the hood and the radiator core support. you are fishing for the release you will pull it to the drivers side of the car. it really helps if you can find a cadillac deville 1985 fwd to 1993 fwd look at the latch and you will see how this tool will work.GOOD LUCK!

Which door locks are better kwikset or schlage?

In my personal opinion as a locksmith, Schlage is a better lock. The common residential locks have 5 spaces, although some have 6. Both manufactures have each. Schlage has tighter tolerances between the cylinder and plug, and 10 depths as opposed to Kwikset with 6.

How do you unlock a 1993 Chevy Prism with a slim Jim?

I have had this problem three times. With my 1990 GEO Prizm I went to a dealer (any Chevy or Toyota dealer will do this) with my title and insurance card and got a new key for way cheaper ($4.00) than a locksmith would charge. With my 1999 Chevy Prizm, I had the same problem twice. A locksmith told me that these are hard vehicles to get into, so I ended up going to a dealer again. The above answer is the correct answer. Dodge Dakota broken hood release?

This release would be under the hood. You can try to pop the lid or just get it opened without all of that. You should replace it as soon as possible.

How do you open the hood if the hood release cable is disconected on your 1995 Astro?

I have had a similar problem with my 1997 Ford Explorer a few months back, and I fixed it myself.

The only way to do this without going to a mechanic or damaging your hood would be to remove the front grill assembly if you can access it with a socket wrench from the outside, so that the hood release mechanism's bolts are exposed. Then, remove the hood latch (3 or 4 bolts) and lift the hood, the mechanism should still be attached to it. Finagle the mechanism off of the hood and rewire a new cable or reattach the original if it's not broken. If you need a new mechanism, go to a 'previously used automobile emporium'. Do not put junk on your vehicle.

How do you release the hood latch when the cable is broken?

Remove the front grill (4 star screws on the 1994 Grand Voyager I have). You can then reach in at the center front of the hood and push the primary latch toward the driver's side. If you can't push it hard enough with your finger, you may need a screwdriver or similar tool. Once that releases, open as normal.

remove the interior door panel. you will see a metal rod connecting your interior and exterior door handles. most of the time the rod comes loose from one or the other. reconnect the rod. theres not much space so you might need a pair of needlenose pliers. if that still doesnt work inside the door to the rear is a trip lever that after pulling will open the door. the lever can be stubborn but it will open the door. any service center should be able to open it for you.

If the door is jammed shut, it will not be possible to remove the door trim on most cars without destroying it. However, if you are able to roll the window down you should be able to insert a thin piece of metal (ie. wire coat hanger, slimjim etc.) and manipulate the door handle rod inside to pop it open. This is possible only if the reason behind the jam is mechanical and not structural.

How do you repair the inside door handle of a truck?

you would normally have to pull the inside panel to the door off and then you would have to remove the handle its self. Im not sure if there are salvage places near you that sell used automotive parts put that would be a good place to start to get a new one. or you can jsut bring it to an automotice technition to have a look at it.

How do you repair the hood release on a 1991 corvette cable is intact the plastic pull is out of it socket?

Pull the lower dash panel to get access to the lever better. Tough to do but I layed on the floorboard, looking up, and slid the cable end back into the lever. I then tie-wrapped both cables (L & R hood release) together to prevent one of them from shifting around and coming back out.

How do you release hood latch when cable is broken on 1992 Chevy Van?

I had this problem as well and couldn't find any help on the net. However we fixed it!

You need two people.

Take the engine cover off and remove the air cleaner and any ducting that you can.

Take a metal coat hanger or similar wire and bend a 90 degree bend roughly half way down the rod. Take the end of the coat hanger and make a loop. Bend the wire around itself to close the loop and make it strong. You will be using it to pull hard!

Move the passenger seat as far back as possible.

Get a couple towels and lay them on the engine for comfort.

Lay on your back on passenger floor area so you can reach your left arm into the engine bay.

Have your buddy put the coat hanger under the hood to the right of the hood r elease (from outside the vehicle). push it in a couple inches and then turn so the hanger goes behind the latch.

Now reach in and feel around. If your lucky you will be bale to hook he loop around the point that the cable end is attached to. You may need to hold it in place while your buddy pulls from the outside. Be careful! it hurts if it pinches your fingers!

Good luck!

Why does the car beep when the door is open and the key is not in the ignition?

Most likely because you left your lights on. Every vehicle plays some kind of chime or warning when you open your door to leave your vehicle when you have the keys out of the ignition. This is to prevent you from leaving your vehicle unattended with the lights on, so you don't kill your battery.

How do you open the backdoor of a 1994 Chevy astro van when the handle has broke inside and their is no handle on the inside?

The only way is to remove the inside door panel (not an easy job with the door closed). Once the panel is removed, you'll have access to the latch mechanism. You will be having to remove this panel to put a new door handle on anyway.

How can you open the trunk of a 1992 Toyota Camry when the lock became stuck in the open horizontal position when the key was turned with the trunk lid open?

It appears that you turned the lock counterclockwise instead of clockwise . If the lock is set in the horizontal alignment, it is probably set for valet or parking theft protection. Using the master key-not the valet key-try to jiggle the master key in the lock turning it clockwise. Keep trying, perhaps some graphite dust might help lube the key chamber. The trunk lid opener lever next to the driver seat will not work in the horizontal key lock mode to prevent thief by valets or by vandals when street parking. Keep trying, but do not force, it will eventually move to the right-clockwise. Your factory car manual will explain more in detail. Toyotas and Lexus have the same locking schemes for the trunk lid and glove box. Don H.

How do you fix a car door lock of a Chevy aveo that fell into the door?

This is a funny question only because my wife just went thru this with her Aveo. Not as difficult as it seems. May take about an hour to take off and put back on. Here is how to fix it if you do not have power windows and locks.

On the inside panel:

1. Remove the three screws at the bottom of the door

2. Remove the screw that holds the door handle in place

3. By the arm rest, there is a little plastic round cover. Use a flat head screwdriver and pop that cover off.

4. Behind that cover is a screw. Remove it.

5. Go to the window crank and push in on the panel.

6. When you push in on this panel, you will see a small C clip holding the window crank on. While still pushing on the door, use something to push that clip down on one side to pop it off. Don't worry about the clip moving, because it won't.

7. Now remove the window crank and that small plastic piece behind it.

8. Gently start pulling the door panel off around the edges. You will hear a bunch of clicks. Don't worry, that is just the clips that hold the door panel on releasing.

9. Once you have freed the door panel all around, all you have to do is pull up, kind of hard, and the panel will lift up. Be sure to watch out for the door lock and right under neath the mirrors where the panel is tucked into. The door handle will be a bit tricky, but work with it, and it will eventually come thru the hole in the panel.

10. When you finally get this panel off, you will notice that there is a white plastic all around the access holes of the door. Pull back the top left portion of this plastic.

11. Inside by the door handle you will notice that the door panel is suppose to be held on by two screws. The one in question holds down the lock mechanism, and the other holds down the door handle.

At this point, you can do one of two things:

  • 1. If you hear the screw at the bottom of the door, pull the plastic back at the bottom, reach down, and grab the screw and reinstall in the missing spot.
  • 2. If the screw has disappeared (like mine did, of which, I have no idea how) then you will have to take the other screw off, take it down to a hardware store (Lowe's or other type) and get a new screw and washer. Trust me, they will have it. You just have too look.

12. Reinstall the screw making sure it goes thru the bracket that is coming off of the lock mechanism first and then into the door handle to hold them both in place. The nut will tighten with a 10 mm wrench.

13. At this point work in the reverse order and put the panel back on the car.

When reinstalling the door panel, be sure to make sure that the door lock is lined up correctly before forcing the panel back down on. Keep working with the door handle too, as it will eventually come thru.

Helpful comments from other contributors:

  • Took me 20 minutes with these excellent instructions. I would add that there is an access hole right below the door lock that you can insert a 1/4 socket and extension through and lines right up with the bolt hole. Also it is a good time to tighten the 2 screws that hold the interior door pull on since you have the panel off. Mine were almost falling out. Also there is a small round trim ring around the interior door handle. It can be popped off with a small flat bladed screwdriver so you don't have to remove the door handle at all. Just be careful with it because some of the tabs are molded opposite of what you would think.
  • Note that when you are sliding the panel off and on, what you are doing is hooking the top of it over the frame where the window meets the panel. The last part to slide off is the part where the side view mirror cover is and you just need to play with it a bit. When you re-install the panel, slide it under that cover and then hook the panel on.
  • The tip about the trim ring is excellent. You might want to order a few panel clips from your dealer before you attempt this procedure, as they are brittle and tend to break.
  • For #6 above: don't try pushing on the 'C' clip at the end(s). I found it much easier to pry it open using a flat screwdriver from its mid-point. Just lever the little wire and the handle pops right off. The 'C' clip might fly away, so watch carefully and retrieve it.
  • Also please note it is best to do this entire procedure with the window rolled up fully closed.
  • Helpful post. I just finished this task on a 2005 Aveo with power windows. The power window switch is not held on with clips so do not try to pry it out. It is screwed on from underneath the switch and does not need to come off the door panel for this job. Pop the door panel loose after removing screws per your instructions - you should also remove the black triangular plastic piece covering the driver side door mirror/manual adjuster. It pops out easily using a screwdriver or interior trim tool. Reach up inside the door panel from the bottom and disconnect the power window switch (large white connector with push to remove on one side) and mirror switch (if so equipped - smaller connect up higher with push to remove on one end). At this point the door panel will be held in place by the door handle. It is possible to pull the round door handle/trim through the hole in the door panel but it is not meant to come off this way. I could also not get the round door trim to pop off per Max's post. I ended up reaching behind the door panel from the top and disconnected the actuator rod from the door handle by pushing up on the small green clip that forms a half circle where the rod meets the handle.
  • I could not find the missing screw until I dropped the replacement screw I was installing. Both screws ended up in a ledge created by a V shaped brace on the sheet metal of the door about 3 inches below the mounting hole. Take a small screwdriver and sweep the ledge created by this brace from back to front and you will likely find it.
  • My door lock rod (attaches to the door lock you are trying to put back in the hole) was badly bent - most likely from the power window hitting the door lock that was dangling inside the door. I had to take the actuator rod loose - similar to removing the clip at the door handle in order to be able to put the lock in the hole. I was able to bend the rod back into place by hand - the first time I tried there was too much tension on it and the lock would not function properly. Second time was the charm. The door handle was a problem when replacing the panel. I reconnected the actuator rod clip with the handle on the outside of the door panel. There are two large plastic clips at the front ot the handle trim that are designed to go into slots on the door. They will not line up properly and will hold the trim away from the door. In that position, just hit the front of the door handle trim sharply with the palm of your hand and they will pop into place. Then install the screw into the handle trim. I wasn't able to do this in 20 minutes (maybe next time) but it is easy and takes less than a hour.

If 7 11 is open 24 7 why are there locks on the doors?

The reason why there are locks on the door are in the case of a power outage and security cameras and tills will not be able to function as well as the phone. This makes the store vulnerable to theft and crime.
