You will usually find the diagram on the cardboard sleeve the belt is folded inside of. You can also find it at any library in the auto repair section. Haynes an automotive publisher sells a manual for your car for around $20 and it has a step by step procedure for almost every repair with lots of pictures and well worth the small price when you see how much you save on simple repairs. If it is a serpentine belt just make sure you draw yourself a diagram (there should be one under the hood somewhere)of how it goes around each pulley.Then just release the tension from the belt by moving the tensioner pulley,then replace the belt.Make sure it is on each pulley all the way before starting the car.

First, if there is not a diagram of the serpentine belt attached somewhere in the engine compartment, draw a picture of how the belt is routed or take a digital photo. It's difficult to reinstall without this reference. Next, loosen the tensioner and remove the belt from the pulley. Raise the front/passenger side of the vehicle and place it on jackstands. Remove the tire and plastic cowl to gain access to the lower part of the engine. Remove the nut (15mm?) at the lower end of the motor mount bracket between the crankshaft and A/C compressor (at the engine, not the mount itself), then, using a Torx (female) socket, remove the center stud (if you're not removing the nut over the Torx stud, you're in the wrong place). Remove the metal sleeve between the bracket and the engine; this will allow you to remove the serpentine belt; you may have to drive it out with a bar and mallet. In some cases, you may need to loosen other bolts on the motor mount or bracket to get the stud and sleeve out. You may also need to support the engine before removing the stud (use a floor jack and a sturdy, flat piece of wood at the oil pan to prevent damage) and slowly raise or lower it to get everything realigned. hi there. on the underside of your bonnet there should be a diagram of the belt configuration and how to install the belt. do you have a manufacturers manual in the glove box?

On the belt routing diagram under the hood (near the grille, but under the hood) you will find the location of the 'tensioner' pulley. You need to get a 15mm socket and place it on the bolt on the tensioner pulley. Then use a ratchet to put clockwise pressure on the bolt to loosen the tension on the belt. This will allow you to remove the belt from the idler pulley, remove the bolt, put on the new pulley. Now put clockwise pressure on the tensioner pulley again to put slack in the belt so you can slip it around the new idler pulley. You're done.

I have a 99 LS and changed the belt myself in about fifteen minutes. The cost of the belt was under $20 Canadian. I am mechanically inclined, however, the diagram under the hood is easy enogh to figure out. You will need a socket set and pry bar. A chiltons or haynes manual will help save money in the future as well. They should be called backyard mechanics bibles! Good luck>

2001 Malibu requires you to remove engine mount in order to relace the belt. Must support motor. The first estimate is about right.

There is a spring loaded pulley near the top left side of the engine to the right of the alternator. If you take a ratchet or breaker bar and put it on the nut on the pulley and rotate it counter-clockwise, you will swing the arm and release the belt tension.

most cars have an adjuster pulley where you can tighten the belt and also replaceit as well.

A serpentine belt is an accessory drive belt, with small multiple v-ribs, routed around most or all of the engine-powered accessories such as the alternator, A/C compressor and power steering pump. Usually both the front and the back side of the belt come into contact with various pulleys. The belt tension is controlled by an idler pulley with a spring inside. This eliminates the need for periodic adjustment.

It's possible to bypass the A/C pump but it may not be easy. You'll have to remove the pump and replace/change any fan belt pulleys so everything keeps turning. Suggest you go to a auto wrecking yard for all the parts. But first, let me syggest this. If your A/C is squeeling even when you're not using it, I'd replace the fan belt and see if that helps first. Sometimes belts just squeel for no apparent reason. They get old or something. Actually, I've seen a few new ones squeel too. Cheap belts. Answer: I've had this problem as well. I got a bypass pully from Auto zone. $40 bucks. Took out the old compresser and in the same three mounting holes I put the free wheel pully in. It is the same size as the compresser pully but just not hooked up to anything. very easy to install.

If there isn`t a drawing of the belt system make one to insure the new belt is on correctly.. Using a socket or large wrench on the Idler pulley located lower right of the PS pump lift the pulley it is spring loaded, slide the belt off all the pulleys it services. There is one brace to remove to completely remove and replace the belt. Place the new belt as per diagram on all the pulleys idler included. Lift the idler pulley to remove spring tension and slip the belt on to the Alternator Pulley. Make certain that the belt is lined correctly in the groves on the pulleys before starting. GOOD LUCK. Under the hood should be a diagram of the belt, this is your best reference without the service manual. All you have to determine is which direction to rotate the belt tensioner, and then put the belt back on as shown in the diagram.

If it is not you can run down to your nearest auto parts store and they can print it out for you or just buy the Hayes or chilton manual on your car. It only cost a few bucks and it well helps you out later down the line if something else brakes.
