There are a few larger vehicles, 3/4, and 1 ton trucks and SUV's etc that use power steering fluid from the power steering takeoff to power the brake assist system. In those cases the engine belt does power the brake system, but it will still work without engine power with more pedal pressure required.

In the rare cases the brake assist is powered from the power steering, the brakes and anti lock will still function, rather the engine is running or not or the belt has broken or not. Same goes for diesels that use and engine driven vacuum pump to provide vacuum for braking assist and other systems requiring vacuum.

On the majority of vehicles, the alternator has a mounting bolt that can be loosened and then you move the alternator out away from the belt ; thus applying more tension. This tightens the belt, then while holding it in the new position , re-tighten the mounting bolt.

No. The timing belt or chain connects to crankshaft and camshafts. The serpentine belt connects the crankshaft with the alternator, ac compressor, power steering, etc.

To install drive belt on a 1999 Kawasaki Prairie 400 4x4, access the engine area and remove the cover that holds the clutch. Remove the drive belt around the clutch at the right side of the engine. Replace with new.

If the sticker is missing go to your public library and look at one of the Chilton manuals for your year and model. Also, it makes a difference if you have air conditioning or not (different belt routing).

in my malibu, I loosened the belt tensioner first. There is a motor mount just in front of the belt that ou have to take one side off of. I lut a jack under the engine and jacked up the one side about an inch and slid the belt between the mount and the frame. Replacement belt should be put on using the diagram shown under the hood. It took me about 30 minutes my 1st time.

I'm not going to dispute anyone else's answer, but if you want to know a real easy crude way to change the serpentine belt on a 99' Chevy Malibu in about 5 minutes, which I just got through doing 15 minutes ago, listen to this.

You do not need any tools other than a long piece of steel bailing wire and may-be one other person to take the belt off the pulley. Run the bailing wire around the belt tensioner and out to the front of the car, pull the wire towards you and there you have it, bingo, the belt is loose enough to come off with out removing any other parts from the car. In order to replace the belt, just do the same thing, pull on the wire and install the new belt. (DON'T FORGET TO REMOVE THE WIRE AFTERWARDS) lol

do not use the belt dressing, save your money. The belt is not the problem. You have a pulley that is cutting the belt. If you are replacing belts, then check on make sure your pulleys are free AND that you have the pulleys aligned. The belt may be riding close to an edge and cutting it. The idler pulley is known for wearing out, check that one and then go through making sure all you pulleys are turning. You may have an A/C puulley that is not turnign free when the A/C condensor kicks in......belt dressing is a waste of money

You must look at the drive pulley shaft( the bolt at the pulley center) 14mm wrench.
Loosen this first, then loosen the tensioner/jack screw on the idler pulley. If stuck after this, try penetrant oil on threads, or tap with dead blow soft mallet.

Check your oil and see if it has a chocolate milk look to it if not the get a compression tester 30$ at auto parts store and go through each cylinder and each compression test should be close to each other if one is dramatically different you have a cracked head gasket and can run around 1200$ to fix if its a chocolate milk look in your oil then its a cracked head gasket they can crack in those two places and white smoke coming from the tailpipe is usually an indication of a head gasket if the temp gauge is above normal.

In theory, it could, but in all practicality, it would not. The four main causes of misfires are faulty sparkplugs, bad spark plug wires, bad fuel injectors or a loss of compression.

Tighten the belt. The belt drive the AC compressor. On some cars the compressor engages when the defrost is on to remove moisture from the air before it's heated for the defrosters.

Loosen tension regulating bolt for the alternator and the bolt attaching it the engines body, shift the alternator down and remove the belt. Install new one. Use regulating bolt to set proper tension. If you do not have tension meter, tighten until you can twist the belt only 3/4 of full turn.

to take it off get a 3/4 ratchet and it fits into the tens. pulley. push it down and the belt will come loose make sure you hold it. with the other hand remove it off of any pulley normally the idler pulley will be best one to use then when you have it off that pulley slowly easy up on the ratchet and remove so you can take the belt off. then you will see a pic of how the belt should look when you replace the new one and remember how it looked before always helps too

I don't know about the catalytic converter (typically Rangers -at least the 4.0L V6 has 2 catalytic converters). But for the rest of the exhaust system : with 2 prebend pipes, gaskets and the muffler, you are looking at anywhere from $ 361 to $ 457.00 as of Dec 15, 2011. - it also depends on the shop who does the work. Diagram is on the engine by the belt. You may have to clean off oily residue to see it...

check the following: idealer wheel is a 15 mm spanner and is spring loaded. from the floor push back and remove the belt from the lower pully. you need some work removing the water tack and power steering oil tank. this ifo is based on LX 96

Tensioners are used to tighten the belt on the engine so where ever your belt is (usually on the front of the engine) is where the tensioner will be located. There are generally 2 types of tensioners - on the older vehicles the alternator is used as the tensioner, there may be a bolt that you will loosen and tighten to adjust it. On the newer vehicles the tensioner looks like a pully and it is spring loaded, it will have a square hole in the center of it you can use either a breaker bar or a 1/2 inch drive socket wrench depending on which one you can get in there with. You will need to pull the tensioner the opposite direction of the belt to release the tension on the belt.

remove lower covers under passenger side. above power steering pump is smallest pulley. it is spring loaded tensioner for belt. put 13mm socket-rachet on it and turn bolt clockwise, thus relieving tension. install new belt in proper path and unload pulley again while slipping belt over this pulley. Takes some patience. onceon youre done. all auto adjusting.

I just did one today for my uncles 2000 Leganza 2.2. The trick is that the belt goes around the tensioner then the crankshaft pulley. It should make an s from the bottom of the alt. pulley to the tensioner then to the crank.
