Serpentine Belts

You need a 12 sided 14mm socket and that will access the bolt it will be very tight so use a breaker bar first you may have to remove the 10mm bolt that holds the power steer hoses onto subframe for a bit more room but am sure you will work it out.

the directions should be right under the hood left hand side if not buy a chiltons book from orielly will show how belt goes on if not just follow pulleys belt will only go on one way

If the plastic piece showing the diagram is missing on your car, you can call the ford dealership and have them e-mail it to you. They did that for me. I can tell you there are many places on the web (and many auto parts stores) which will show you the "correct" diagram for a car, but are completely wrong!!! I got about 4 or 5 "correct" diagrams for my ford windstar, all of which were wrong. it wasnt until i called the dealership and spoke with the parts dept. was I able to finally get a diagram that worked.

In the center of the drum/pully there is a bolt (or nut, depending). This is what is locking the pully in place. Loosen it (no more than it takes to free it) befor turning the adjuster. Be sure to loosly snug it down to check your final adjustment and if correct, then you can tighten it all the way. (If it is too loose when the adjustment is set then the drum/pully will move when you tighten it and throw off the adjustment.)

There should be one under the hood either on the hood itself or on the nose when you lift the hood, if you don't find it there check in the owners manual sometimes they will have simple diagrams like that, if your's doesn't you can go to auto zone or advance and if there is someone competent working that day they can print you a diagram because they have done it for me before, so don't let them say they can't because I know they can make them do there job!

depending on if it has the 3.8L or the 3.4L engine. first locate the serpetine belt diagram. or belt routing diagram, if it doesnt have one draw your own. then locate the tensioner which is usually a pulley connected to a moveable arm. place a 3/8" ratchet into the designated hole on the tensioner arm and turn the ratchet as if it were a bolt. if it doesnt move fairy easy reverse the direction of the ratchet. if it still doesnt turn you may have a seized tensioner. (which is fairly uncommon) remove the old belt and replace the new one with the correct routing. the routing is very important you don't want things spining in the wrong direction. check to make sure the belt is in all grooves and on all pulleys, if so release the tensioer and start the car.

Loosen the belt tensioner. Make sure that the belt can be removed easily. Replace the belt with a new one. Check that belt is clean before installing. Clean the pulleys if you have to.

Tighten the belt tensioner to set proper tension.

To change alternator belt on a Suzuki Swift, first disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal. Then disconnect the electrical wires going to the alternator and remove the bolts holding the alternator to the frame. Slip off the old alternator belt and replace with another. Finally, put back all the bolts and cables previously removed or disconnected.

I am not a mechanic but saw my mechanic change it on my car. Go underneath the car. One of the pulley wheels the belt goes through needs to be pried back with a screw driver or something similar to release the tension on the belt. Only one of the pulley wheels will move, so try each one. On my car, the pulley was slightly rusted, so he WD 40'ed it first. It was still a little stiff, and he had to use a lot of elbow grease. Remove and replace belt. Good luck.

First, release the tension on the belt with a 1/2" breakover or ratchet to remove the belt. You don't need a socket, the square part is what is needed, there is a square hole for it. Then simply take a (I believe a 15mm but I know its metric) socket or wrench and unscrew the bolt and the whole thing should come off the front of the engine. Is that engine a turbo-diesel 7.3L Indirect Injected engine? My Dad has a 1993 IDI turbo diesel non-powerstroke that I've worked on many times. you can do it 2 ways you can jack up the car remove the right wheel (passenger side) and then the 2 splash gards that are held on by plastic retaining clips which will provide you with easy access to the tensioner then turn it clockwise to relese it the routing directions should be under the hood the other way is easier i think i just removed the top motor mount and then had eaiser access to the tensioner from the top it was also less dirty

Most idler pulley's are near the top and usually quite easy to get to. Press on the belt somewhere, enough to deflect it a couple inches and watch to see which pully is mounted on a tension spring. That is the idler pulley.

You need a special tool called a Serpentine Belt Tool. In Sears it’s the KD Tools Geared Serpentine Belt Tool Sears item #00947098000 Mfr. model #3680. The key to replacing the belt is pulling down the tension wheel enough so that you can lift the belt around it. The problem with standard tools is that there’s no room to angle a conventional tool in. When assembled the belt tool forms an angle that is just right for the job. Also, when you’re ready to remount the belt feed the belt around all the wheels except the idler pulley. Pull down the tension wheel belt tool and slide the belt over the idler pulley and you’re done. Then keep the belt tool the back of your van because every time you hit a puddle you will have to do the whole thing over again. – Mike Snodderly, USAF retired
