Hey Duster, remove steering wheel, remove the lock plate, this require a special tool, the ignition tumbler id held by a torx bolt, and it will slide out.. get a manual for any Gm car of that vintage....hope thuis helps..

If it's the ignition your vehicles motor will not turn over at all. If it does turn over it's either one of three things: battery, alternator, or starter. You can take your starter, battery and alternator to a local advance auto parts and they will test the charge for you. That will tell you what you need to know.

I'm a repo man, so, I'll tell you what I know.

The dealer keeps a spare set of keys, that pair of keys they send people in the mail after they're done paying for the car is the 'repo set'.

That is not always the case, there are actually several ways to repo a car, they can pop the linkage on the vehicle without keys and this basically puts the car in neutral or they can use tire dollies if the vehicle is all wheel drive or left in 4 wheel drive. If the repo agent wants the vehicle they will get the vehicle regardless... best just not to tote the note because they will find the car, believe me my husband has been in the industry for years. Also most reposession companies will cut their own keys with a code from the finance company, only mom and pop dealerships usually keep a spare set.

This general question is a good one, but even with more specifics, only a general answer can be provided. A starter will last "several years" under normal use. That's about it. Note that a number of auto parts outfits warranty a starter for a long, long time if you pay a bit "extra" for it. They expect replacement starters to last pretty much for the life of the car - while you have it. The warranty isn't transferable. They're betting you'll get rid of the vehicle before their starter fails. And they've done their homework. They make money by "guessing" correctly. Starters are generally pretty tough. Ten years isn't a long time for a starter to last under normal use. A properly maintained engine in a "normally" operated car won't place an inordinate burden on the starter, so you should get some good "mileage" out of one.

If it has air bags, don't try. If it has a security chip on the keyswitch, don't try. If it doesn't have either, remove the steering wheel and expose the turn signal switch. You should be able to see one or more screws that hold the switch assembly in place. Remove the screws, pull the switch and take it with you to an auto parts retailer. You should be able to get a new keyswitch assembly there. Note that it's only the lock mechanism. You aren't really doing anything to the electrical.

switch removal1. disconnect negative battery cable2. remove the steering wheel3. unplug the wires from the switch, remove the bolts and lift switch off steering column

ignition lock cylinder removal1. disconnect negative battery cable2. remove the steering wheel3. remove the knee bolster and steering column cover screws4. separate the steering column covers and pull the upper cover up for access to the lock release tab5. with the key in the acc position, depress the release tab, then pull the lock cylinder straight out and remove it from the steering column.

Yep, a starter can whine worse than a little kid.

If the "bendix" doesn't kick the gear out to fully engage into the flywheel teeth - and even worse: if the teeth on the flywheel are worn down/away.

A physical inspection of the starter and flywheel gear-teeth will be a good guide.

Hot wire... although I don't know how... You're supposed to do friction on two purposely cut wires in your car... well if is YOUR car install a remote starter! if not then you have to brake the key cilynder and do what you got to do.(don't try it)

it will be on the ingition cylinder assembly should be closer to where the key hole sometimes intigrated with park lock switch. don't touch unless you have access to programing software and/or know what you are doing. if it doesn't have the right programming then it won't start or it will die shortly after starting.

If there is a fusible link in the truck, or just under the hood, it would be connected to your fuse box and attached to your positive terminal on the battery.

HEI cap has coil mounted in it. they do make a blaster coil that fits in the cap. if your coil is the type of blaster that is shaped like a soda can but a bit smaller it WILL NOT work on an HEI

The diagram for the power distribution box ( which is located in the engine compartment , on the drivers side , near the battery ) is on ( page 284 )

It shows that the starter relay is a simple plug in

before doing anything disconnect the negative cable from the battery of the car. the starter for a 99 maxima is located under the air filter housing and air intake duct, you have to remove both to even see the starter. Be careful when you remove these, they all have connectors that control important air sensors. Unhook, or unscrew anything attached to these parts before pulling out.

once you have these out you will need to reach 2 bolts, i recommend an extension for the socket-wrentch of at least 8 inches. you will also have to disconnect the negative and the aux connectors from the starter.
